FPS Restrictions

For PC categories, FPS has been identified to have the following effects during gameplay relevant to fullgame speedrunning:

  • Framerates above 60 FPS result in faster text mashing and menuing resulting in significant timesaves during long dialogue segments.
  • Framerates below 60 FPS result in faster animations during the Barroth Escort Section causing the Handler and Researchers to progress to the Barroth cutscene faster.

Due to these findings, the following restrictions on FPS have been implemented:

  • Framerate Maximum: 144 FPS
  • Framerate Minimum: 30 FPS

Changing framerate DURING an attempt is PERMITTED but must comply with the restrictions noted above.

The rule is designed to avoid a “pay-to-win” environment where better PCs achieve faster speedrun times than worse-performing PCs. Additionally, a framerate below 30 FPS is only achievable using external tools.

To assist in verification, runners are requested (not required) to show their framerate settings during the run. The preferred time to show framerate settings would be during the Stealth Tutorial in the Ancient Forest following the Zorah Magdaros introduction. Generally, there has been enough time for runners to make settings changes while waiting on the Handler to progress the tutorial segment. This makes for a convenient moment to check/verify framerate at the start of the run. Once again: this is not required, but requested. However, the MHW moderation team reserves the right to reject any potential “Top 3” run if framerate is not verified during the submission.

CSM & Load Removal for Shara%

It was our intent to remove load times and cutscene times from the current Top 3 Shara% leaderboard runs. Load times present a significant amount of real time in the current timing. It seemed removing only cutscene time presented an unfair disadvantage to existing runs. However, JalBagel’s July 13, 2024, Shara% speedrun was completed in a time of 6:53:10.37 IGT (with loads and cutscenes removed). This is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes faster than the current first place Shara% speedrun with cutscene time removed only (mosstkm’s Shara% in 10:43:20 / 8:33:29 with cutscene time removed).

It is unlikely that load times accounted for the 1 hour and 40 minute difference, but rather a fundamental improvement to the speedrun is the cause. Therefore, we believe it is appropriate to implement the IGT timing method to Shara% without removing load times from the current Top 3 speedruns. Instead, cutscene time will be removed from the current Shara% speedruns to display both a RTA and IGT timing method. A total of 2:09:50.400 will be REMOVED from runs completed as RTA (without the autosplitter) presently on the leaderboard and submitted in the future.

Hello Everyone! If you didn't know, we've been busy testing out a plethora of new rules for fullgame speedruns! We're excited to share these new changes today and begin implementing them in new runs and on the leaderboards! Feel free to ask questions or for assistance with the new rules and tools and how they'll affect your runs! Please note: the new rules presented here only affect PC categories.

Static Track RNG Rule

Based on community feedback and interest, we have decided to allow runners to “choose” which track patterns will occur for the required track gathering segments in both Xeno% and Shara% categories for PC platform. This removes an approximately 2 minute and 10 second variance between the “best possible combination” and “worst possible combination.” The Static Track RNG creates few changes in routing. Any routing achieved with Static Track RNG is technically possible with unmodded Variable Track RNG, but is less likely and creates a reset-heavy mentality for perfection.

Runners are now able to set which track patterns they would like to have during a run using the MHW Speedrun Tool available here. Once installed and setup, runners can choose which patterns appear during the track gathering segments for Pink Rathian, Nergigante (after first Elder’s Recess visit if needed), Kushala Daora, Teostra, Vaal Hazak, Namielle (MR), and Blackveil Vaal Hazak (MR). Simply pick which number pattern you would like during your run, then implement the mod using the “Load to nativepc” button. The number identifiers for each pattern use the game’s internal numbering. This is not the same as the current number system used in JalBagel’s Track Gathering Guide. Track patterns must be selected and implemented BEFORE the run begins and cannot be edited DURING an attempt.

For reference, the fastest gathering combination presently is:

  • Pink Rathian in Wildspire Waste: 1
  • Kushala Daora: 1
  • Teostra: 1
  • Vaal Hazak: 3

Reminder: you do not need to use these patterns in your attempts. You can use any combination of possible track patterns available in the tool. This is only a recommendation based on the current world record and other top time runs.

To implement Static Track RNG into the leaderboards, a new variable will be added: Track RNG. There will be two options:

  • Random - This indicates the track patterns in the submitted attempt are randomized and not modded.
  • Static - This indicates the track patterns in the submitted attempt have been modded by the MHW Speedrun Tool and are not random.

Since no major routing changes are anticipated, the new variables (Random and Static) will be tracked on the same PC leaderboard. You will be able to filter by the variable similarly to the weapon variable filter currently.

As Schmiddi stated, we are only accepting Optional quest speedruns. Please refer to the category rules on the leaderboard and this forum thread for more information!

Florida, USAJalBagel1 month ago

With the Early Access Beta concluded, I've been able to sit down and flesh out the Beta rules and open the Beta Leaderboard! The Beta rules can be found below!

Speedruns of Optional Quests available during Open Beta Test Periods:

  • OBT Early Access: October 28 - October 30
  • OBT 1: October 31 - November 3

Must indicate which OBT period the run was completed. Applicable platforms are PS5, XBox Series S/X, and PC (Steam).

Submissions utilize the End-Quest Timer. The quest time on the rewards screen must be visible in the submitted recording. Runs must be recorded from start of quest to end. Game audio with submissions is preferred. Excluding/muting game audio may lead to the submission being rejected. Damage values (whole or decimal) must be visible during the hunt.

Submissions of "Field Survey" hunts will not be accepted.

NOTE: Level Leaderboards are tracked on a "per weapon" basis. Use the Filter feature of the leaderboard to view the single-weapon leaderboard.

Freestyle Ruleset has no restrictions. All equipment, strategies, resources, and tools can be used during the speedrun.

You may notice equipment and skills verification is not needed. This is excluded for now until it's demonstrated we need it. Reminder: These are "Beta" rules too! I anticipate these changing even with just a 2nd Beta period. Feel free to continue providing feedback or even proposing other categories outside the current "Freestyle" ruleset!

Looking forward to seeing your runs! ~ Jal

The Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta Test is this week! The OBT will most likely occur in waves much live previous game beta/playtest periods. During this time, I, as well as others in the moderation team and MHSR community, will be playing Wilds to develop a feel for individual level timing, rules, and moderation. Wilds will be introducing MANY new mechanics and operations that will change how IL speedrunning is accomplished. I ask that you, the runners, also take up an interest in helping design the early draft of the IL rulesets!

Our current goal is to have a Leaderboard for the Beta by October 31st for the OBT period including all platforms. That means we'll be using the PS+ Early Access Play to draft the ruleset for use during the weekend. Until then, play the OBT during the PS+ Early Access Play and provide feedback below about your experience and possible ideas for rulesets, timing methods, and other restrictions or ideas!

I look forward to hunting with everyone else in the full release of MH Wilds and seeing your speedruns of the OBT! ~ Jal

Hello there! Generally speaking, most runners play on PC since we have permitted mods thta help remove RNG that effects hunt times. However, the Rise leaderboards are pretty quiet in general.

As far as accepting new runs, unforunately its been very slow. My apologies for that. We have a skeleton crew right now. To my knowledge, I'm the only actove moderator for most MH game leaderboards and I just finished moving. So my goal is to get caught up soon!

As for a new category, we will always humor a category if there's interest within the community to have it. We generally ask that you demonstrate the rule set is unique from what's already existing and multiple people are wanting to run it now and ongoing. Our goal is to not have dead leaderboards.

Hope this helps and good luck with more hunts!

To follow up on this post, both billybobjho and Ze_SpyRo reached out in the MHSR Discord to discuss further. I'll be making new forum posts addressing this conversation soon once we've fleshed out some details. however, the long-and-short if anyone else is keeping up with this: • Historical Preservation will be allowed with the appropriate documented consent from the runner • We are developing a preliminary "playtest" to allow the revival server for leaderboard submissions. This will include IL and RTA submissions for 1P and MP categories. This will be followed up with a new playtest forum which I will link in the forum thread when available.

@ArxxF We always humor emulation categories but require more steps to verification and a standardized emulator/settings. Everyone needs to be on the same playing field which is generally why Emulation isnt allowed. Its difficult to standardize the category. Though it isnt impossible.

A part of the 3U community is working on an Emulation category currently. It just takes a small part of the community being interested in the game and the ruleset putting the effort in to standardize it and verify it.

Florida, USAJalBagel1 year ago

With Emulation, you still get a variety of options and varying performance. Currently, some community members are working on creating a atandardized ruleset for Emulation speedruns. We have been humoring emulation more and more for 3DS and PSP titles given the lack of availability.

Cheating is obviously an issue as well but not the main concern. Primarily it is making a fair and standardized category. Then its developing techniques for verification to make sure all parameters are being followed. Emulation makes verification difficult.

We are always open to emulation. But the category and rules will be highly scrutenized. A leaderboard is only as good as the confidence runners have in the verification.

Different weapon speedruns don't obselete each other. You will see both runs.

On the Quest Leaderboard, you can check the "Rules" button to see the specific requirements/limitations for each category and subcategory! If you still need help feel free to reach out! The community discord is a great place to ask questions, collaborate, and learn!

Hi Mirageiw! I'll take a look at the run when I can! It's a fun idea, but it does fit into the Muliple weapon variable. Unfortunately, it's not a uniquely different run to warrant an entirely new category.

There's no reason you cannot continue to run in this way. I personally find this creativity and fun. I may try it out myself in the future.

Feel free to continue recommending categories, but keep in mind the following: • New categories should be uniquely different from existing categories and, when possible, exclusive from existing categories; and • New categories must have community interest: meaning multiple runners should be willing and excited to run and improve the category, not only in the immediate but over time as well.

With the introduction of Title Update 1, Qurious Crafting, and changes to the TAwiki leaderboard, we've taken a moment to discuss big changes to the MHSR MH Rise IL leaderboards. (TLDR below)

TAwiki Discontinued First of all, TAwiki rukeset will no longer be included in MHSR leaderboards. This may be an inconvenience to some, but with the recent rework to the TAwiki ruleset and the inclusion of Variable TAwiki (or Vwiki) rules, we feel it necessary to discontinue the ruleset on MHSR. Of course, we still support the TAwiki leaderboard and have been very appreciative that they have allowed us to continue hosting the rules as well. We respect all the work TAwiki does and will continue to support their leaderboard in our community. Additionally, we do not want to undermine their rules to cater to the application of Permitted Mods on our leaderboards. Please continue to speedrun the TAwiki ruleset and continue to support their leaderboard. TAwiki Website

New Simple Ruleset Since TAwiki will be discontinued on the MHSR leaderboards, we wanted to provide an alternative to this ruleset that 1) Is unique to the MHSR leaderboard, and 2) Is more catered to the environmental RNG present in MH Rise. We're proud to announce the Simple ruleset! This ruleset is designed to eliminate resets caused by endemic life out of the player's control. Please take a moment and read the rules below: • Solo or Multiplayer (2 to 4 Player). • Multiplayer submissions must show all participant perspectives and are required to complete the same equipment/skill verification. • Mods on the Permitted Mods list are allowed. • No buddies (palicos and palamutes) are allowed. • The use of Qurious Crafted Armor Augments and Weapon Augments are allowed but must be included in equipment/skills verification. • The following skills are prohibited regardless of if they came into effect or not. ..• Heroics(Lv2-5) ..• Dango Adrenaline • The following skills are allowed if they do not come into effect. ..• Fortify • Wyvern Riding is allowed. Players can choose "Press A (Weapon Sheathed)" or "Attack or Press A (Weapon Sheathed)" in sunbreak. Either option is allowed. Wyvern Riding must follow the rules below: ..• Changing setting for wyvern riding from options afters the quest start is prohibited ..• Use of light/strong attack and evasion counter are prohibited ..• Launches and evade canceling are allowed any number of times ..• Riding a non-target monster is allowed if a target monster is in the vicinity (Riding all the way to the target from different areas is prohibited) ..• Riding a target monster to a different area is allowed ..• Riding a non-target monster to a different area is prohibited ..• Launching into walls/other monsters is allowed • The use of the following items are prohibited. ..• Flash Bomb ..• Sonic Bomb ..• Meat Bait, Meat Traps (Raw/Poisoned/Drugged/Tinged, etc.) ..• Poison Smoke Bomb ..• Traps (Shock/Pitfall) ..• Poison/Explosive/Sleep/Paralysis Kunais (etc.) (Regular Kunais are allowed) ..• Poisonfruit, Parafruit, Flashfruit (obtaining is allowed but using is prohibited) ..• Barrel Bombs (Barrel Bomb, Large Barrel Bomb, Mega Barrel Bomb, Elemental Barrel Bombs, etc.) ..• Supply Items • Creatures you need to collect and use as an item are prohibited, and include the following: ..• Puppet Spider ..• Marionette Spider ..• Toads (Blastoad, Paratoad, Poisontoad, Sleeptoad, etc.) ..• Beetles (Firebeetle, Mudbeetle, Snowbeetle Thunderbeetle, etc.) ..• Trapbugs ..• Lanternbug ..• Antidobra ..• Aurorturtle ..• Escuregot ..• Stinkmink ..• Gustcrab ..• Brewhare ..• Wailnard ..• Starburst Bugs (Damage with launching) • Environmental Traps triggered by the player are prohibited, and include the following: ..• Damage from lava/waterfall when riding and launching monsters ..• Jungle Area 11 Falling Boulder • Environmental Traps that are often “unavoidable” or are not triggered by the player are allowed. Examples include: ..• Flashfly (all uses, intentional or accidental, are legal) ..• Slicercrab and Spearsquid ..• Pitfall in the Desert ..• Stump Sap (Citadel Area 13) ..• Poison Cypress (Citadel Area 10) • Artilleries (Ballista/Cannon/Machine Canon/Dragonator/Wyvernshot) are prohibited except in quests featuring Narwa, All-Mother Narwa, Ibushi, and Gaismagorm. • Changing/restocking items or changing equipment are prohibited. • Use of fast travel and buddy recon is allowed. • Items, endemic life, mechanics, and techniques not mentioned in the rules above are allowed. If there is any question if something is allowed, please refer to the Simple Ruleset Q&A Thread. Here you can see if the question has been asked or ask the question yourself.

Additionally, Simple rules can be found here.

The former TAwiki leaderboard will be replaced with Simple rules. The verified TAwiki runs will remain on the Simple leaderboard as they do fit the requirements for Simple, but moving forward

New Restricted Variable You may have noticed Qurious Crafting Armor and Weapon Augments are allowed for this new ruleset. In addition, Qurious Crafting Augments will be allowed for Freestyle. We understand this may not be the preference for all runners. Therefore, we are introducing a new variable to Freestyle and Simple rulesets, the Restricted variable. Freestyle Restricted and Simple Restricted will be recorded separately from their counterparts. The variable will follow all the rules and restrictions as the other rulesets with the following additions: • The use of Qurious Crafted Armor Augments is prohibited. Armor equipment cannot have the Qurious Crafting logo on the equipment icon. Qurious Crafting Weapon Augments are Allowed but must be included in equipment/skills verification. • The use of a Talisman is prohibited.

The intent is to remove RNG elements from the armor skills available to players. This will then allow for 1:1 recreations of armor builds without the need to mod in augmented armor or specific talismans. We felt the addition of the Restricted variable will allow players to speedrun in the way they wanted: with full access to legal Armor Augments and Talisman combinations and without the variability of RNG skills on Armor Augments and Talismans.

Additionally, you may notice the rules for Simple and TAwiki only vary slightly, which means your TAwiki runs may qualify for a Simple rules submission as well. You can submit your TAwiki runs to MHSR Simple rules leaderboards, but not the other way around. If you run using Simple rules, please use descriptors in your video title and description indicating so. Appropriate terms include: • Simple Rules • Simple Restricted Rules • MHSR Simple • MHSR Simple Restricted

Verification Tools With the addition of Qurious Crafting Armor Augments, one apprehension is verifying in-game legal/obtainable Augment combinations. This information is constantly being datamined and updated, and we will continue to use published and peer-reviewed resources to verify the validity of Armor Augments and Talismans. We also wanted to make these tools accessible to the community to assist in the confidence of the leaderboard and maintain the integrity of the community. • Qurious Crafting Armor Augments (beta)Talismans Skills & Slots

Gauntlets Leaderboard As of today, Gauntlets are officially released! Thank you to everyone who participated in the playtest and provided feedback. You will be able to use any ruleset and variable (Freestyle, Restricted Freestyle, Simple, Restricted Simple) for Gauntlet speedruns with the addition of the following rules: • Complete the listed quests in succession for the Gauntlet being performed. • Solo or Multiplayer (2 to 4 Player). • You can complete the quests in any order. • Gauntlets can be performed with Freestyle or Simple rulesets including the Restricted variable. • You must provide an uninterrupted video recording with audio of all quests being completed. This includes Hub movement between quests. • You may restock items, change armor, weapons, decorations, silkbind/switch skill moves, buddies, or any other equipment/settings BETWEEN quests. These changes are not permitted during a quest. • You are required to verify equipment and skills (including augment skills) at the end of a quest in the same method as IL submissions. • You cannot abandon a quest or return from a quest during the Gauntlet. • You may reattempt a quest during the Gauntlet if you fail it, but the IGT of the failed quest will be included in the final time. • Final timing is recorded in IGT and should equal the final time of all quests added together. You can use the IGT calculator to calculate your cumulative IGT time. RTA is a secondary timing method used for marathon estimates if the Gauntlet is performed in a marathon fashion and will not be tracked on the leaderboard. • For RTA timing, time begins when you depart on the first quest. Time ends when the final monster is slain/captured. Include your preparations for the first hunt before time begins. You can provide an RTA time in the SRC submission description or in the YouTube description. • When submitting, please provide timestamps at the beginning of each quest. These can be provided in the SRC submission description or in a YouTube description as Chapters. • Mods, including Permitted Mods, are prohibited with the exception of cosmetics. The intent of Gauntlets is to be an RTA-style IL showcase which should demonstrate a hunters ability to adjust to RNG and prepare for all possibilities. • Hub Mods (such as Auto Restock, Auto Eating, 100% Dango Skills) are allowed for IGT timing, and are banned for RTA timing. • When submitting speedruns, please indicate what mods were used in the submission or video description. • New Gauntlets will be added to the Gauntlet Releases Thread

Starting today, all playtest Gauntlets will be available for submissions! We will be adding more Gauntlets every month to introduce new challenges and themes! The Gauntlet leaderboard can be found in the Individual Levels dropdown list. Gauntlet rules can be found here.

New MR Quests Last of all, the new MR6★ and Anomaly 5★ Quests have been added to the leaderboard.

Thank you for taking the time to read through the recent changes! A lot of these changes are still being tested, so please feel free to provide feedback on the changes above! Thank you again, and Happy Hunting!

TLDR: • TAwiki ruleset has been removed from the MHSR leaderboard and replaced with a new ruleset, Simple ruleset. • Simple rules are listed below and will be added to the leaderboard; general differences from TAwiki are: ..• Allows Environmental Traps outside the player’s control (see examples above) ..• Allows the use of Permitted Mods • Added the Restricted variable for Freestyle and Simple rulesets which prohibits the use of Qurious Armor Augments and Talismans. • Included links to resources for verifying Armor Augment possibilities and Talisman Skills & Slots. (above) • Officially releasing Gauntlets leaderboard using all rulesets (Freestyle, Freestyle Restricted, Simple, Simple Restricted). Rules & Gauntlets available above. IL Gauntlets are a series of five quests designed to showcase IL speedrunning in an RTA-style. All five quests share a common theme to create unique challenges to showcase a runner's ability to script, plan, and adjust to the quests. You can change equipment, buddies, and settings between quests to prepare appropriately for the quest just as you would in a Single IL run. The difference here is you can't reset for RNG.

The intent of Gauntlets is to create IL showcases for Marathon showcases. At this time, we are gauging community interest in this type of speedrun category and would like to begin with a playtest! Please refer to the following draft rules for the playtest: • Complete the listed quests in succession for the Gauntlet being performed. • You can complete the quests in any order. • Gauntlets can be performed with Freestyle or TAwiki rulesets. • You are required to verify equipment and skills at the end of a quest in the same method as IL submissions. • You cannot abandon a quest or return from a quest during the Gauntlet. • You may reattempt a quest during the Gauntlet if you fail it, but the IGT of the failed quest will be included in the final time. • Final timing is recorded in IGT and should equal the final time of all quests added together. You can use this tool via Google Sheets to calculate your cumulative IGT. RTA is a secondary timing method used for marathon estimates if the Gauntlet is performed in a marathon fashion. • For RTA timing, time begins when you depart on the first quest. Time ends when the final monster is slain/captured. Include your preparations for the first hunt before time begins. • When submitting, please provide timestamps at the beginning of each quest. These can be provided in the SRC submission description or in a YouTube description as Chapters. • At this time, mods are PROHIBITED with the exception of cosmetics. The intent of Gauntlets is to be an RTA-style IL showcase which should demonstrate a hunters ability to adjust to RNG and prepare for all possibilities. However, if community interest is shown for a modded category of Gauntlets, this will be considered using the current rules for Permitted Mods. Additionally, Hub Mods (such as Auto Restock, Auto Eating, 100% Dango Skills) are allowed for IGT timing, and are banned for RTA timing. When it comes to submitting/sharing, please indicate you use these mods.

The following Gauntlets will be used for the playtest. Remember, you must use these quests in the Gauntlet.

Seeing Red: Red Monsters MR1★ Uninvited Guest - Daimyo Hermitaur MR4★ King of the Crumbling Castle - Rathalos MR4★ A Mighty Need - Pyre Rakna-Kadaki MR4★ Hot Mud in Your Eye - Magma Almudron MR5★ Emperor of Flame - Teostra

** Wet n Wild**: Water Monsters MR4★ A Mizutsune's Appeal - Mizutsune MR1★ Tetranadon Blockade - Tetranadon MR1★ You Had Me at Poofy - Royal Ludroth MR2★ Messed Up Situation - Jyuratodus MR2★ Somnacanth Sleep Aid - Somnacanth

Exotic Pets: Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Bird? MR4★ Sacrilegious Thunder Wolf - Zinogre MR3★ Purging Hatred - Magnamalo MR1★ It Could be Worse… - Aknosome MR3★ Shadow in the Jungle - Nargacuga MR1★ The Good, the Bad, and Lagombi - Lagombi

Back with a Vengeance: Returning in Sunbreak MR4★ A Slumbering Jungle Espinas - Espinas MR4★ In Search of the Doctor - Astalos MR4★ Dark Wings, Dark World - Gore Magala MR4★ A Thousand Scales of Dread - Seregios MR3★ My Ceanataur Gently Weeps - Shogun Ceanataur

Gauntlets are comprised of five specific quests sharing a common theme, such as the type of monster, the element of the monster, or some other common trend between them. Though not a hard and set rule, themes allow for a more unique challenge and experience when deciding which quests to include. Feel free to recommend your own Gauntlets as well!

Because we require the same equipment/skill verification after each hunt as IL submissions, individual quests can be submitted for new IL records/PBs as long as it follows the other category rules.

Please feel free to ask any questions/rules clarification in this thread or in the MHSR community discord under #rise. Good Luck & Happy Hunting!

Changelog: - Spelling/Grammar - Corrections to Seeing Red Quest List - Updated to mod rules: Hub Mods (i.e. Auto Restock, Auto Eating, 100% Dango Skills) are allowed for IGT but not RTA. If used, RTA time will not be recorded. - Clarified equipment changes and restocking rules. These actions cannot be performed during a quest, including during the end quest timer, to preserve IL verification methods. - Included a link to the IGT calculator Google Sheets doc.
