4-2 0 Blazit Guide

Ok the deal with blazit is that it is WAY simpler than everybody thinks, and once you learn not to overcomplicate it and reduce it down to it's simplest elements it becomes easy To learn blazit, you have to first learn how it works - what physically happens? First mario jumps off the ground, then you press left to clip in, then you do a jump in the wall to stay in the wall That's it, just 3 parts to focus on: the jump off the ground, the left press, and the jump to stay in the wall As a result, to become good at blazit you have to first become amazing at those 3 critical elements, and the way to do THAT is to do one jump blazits One jump blazits are the most incredible trick to learn blazit - usually you jump twice in the wall for blazit to guarantee you stay in there, but it's possible to stay in the wall with just one jump. The issue with one jump clips is that you need a perfect part before the clip in order to stay in the wall (that is, a perfect jump off the ground, a perfect left press, and a near perfect jump in the wall). The benefit of one jump clips is you have to be perfect for them to work With one jump clips, you either get the clip, in which you played perfectly, or you clip out of the wall, where it is usually blindingly obvious as to what you did wrong This gives you an instant reward for doing it correctly, and an instant punishment for doing it incorrectly, as opposed to doing two jump blazits and getting inconsistent mediocre clips and wondering what exactly you did wrong So what do you actually do?

1. THE INPUTS: 1) The jump to the wall: In order to get a good clip, you need to either do a 5 frame jump on frame 232 or 233 from the ground, or a 4 frame jump on frame 233 or 234 from the ground. As a result, it is safest to always try to jump on frame 233 as you will get a good clip with both jump heights, but I would aim to jump slightly later and slightly lower, as jumping too low is generally preferable to jumping too high 2) The left press: If you get a good jump on the frames required and you just bounce off the wall, your left press is bad. If you don't clip in at all, PRESS LEFT EARLIER. This obviously isn't a guaranteed fix, but it will solve your problems 90+% of the time since it's very hard to press left too early and very easy to press it too late. You also don't want to wiggle from right straight into left, but instead want to release right a little bit beforehand (usually just after you jump, but don't put too much / any thought into it), and tap left. This helps you time the left press better 3) The first jump in the wall: You need to jump on the first two frames in the wall in order to get a good clip. This isn't required with two jump blazits, but is necessary with one jumps. If you do the first 2 parts correctly, then this is all you can be messing up If mario doesn't jump in the wall at all, press A later. If stages 1 and 2 are correct and mario jumps out of the wall, press A earlier If you jump on the first frame possible in the wall, mario will stay facing forward despite you holding left - this is an indicator that you did all the inputs perfectly

With those 3 stages, you should be able to get consistently good one jump clips with a bit of practice
If you have any issues with blazit, make sure to go into fceux and tas what you're doing to find the error - it's always better than not knowing the issue and doing some weird pseudoscience fix
Once you get one jump clips down, only THEN do you start adding a second jump in. You should have pretty good muscle memory by then since you'll be getting one jumps fairly consistently, so adding the second jump shouldn't affect the goodness of your clips but will just save you if you mess up the main 3 stages beforehand

As a result, I made a more basic and shorter tutorial to briefly cover any% strategies. This tutorial is 1/4 the length and is good for beginners, but no matter what, you should definitely check out darb's. He did a wonderful job.

Any% Strategy

[big]**__Level by level explanations[/big]**__

**__World 1-1**__
When you go into the underground section, start holding "right" when Mario has fallen about half the way down and jump as soon as you're able, trying to land on the very edge of the bricks in the middle. The farther to the left you land, the sooner you start accelerating to full speed. When the pipe transition happens, you should have 380 on the timer.

Later just hit the flagpole at the very top. If you have 370 remaining on the timer, the level is flawless. If you have 369 remaining on the timer, it can also be flawless, but it's very likely you missed the framerule.

**__World 1-2 (Warp to 4-1)**__

The first difficult part here is jumping over the Koopa with the Goomba directly behind it. The best way to do it is to run at full speed and do a jump where you hold A for 1 to 3 frames and then immediately jump again.

At the end of the level, when you go to the warp zone, you actually do not have to make a tight turnaround. Unless you land on the very right edge of the rightmost pipe, you will not lose the framerule if you never slowed down elsewhere.

**__World 4-1**__

This level is the easiest of the run. Jump at the top of the flagpole and you have a perfect time.

**__World 4-2 (Warp to 8-1)**__

In this level you need to do a Wrong Warp glitch. To do this, you must scroll the screen farther to the right than usual so that both level exits are on the screen at once.

To scroll the screen, you must jump backwards into the corner of a block. If you just want to get the glitch, you can do as many backwards jumps as you like and will get the trick quite easily. For a good time you need to limit it to 3 backwards jumps. To save another framerule, that must be made in 2 backwards jumps, but this almost requires perfection. A perfect run will show 354 or 355 remaining on the timer.

A wallclip can be done on the wall directly after the powerup at the start of the stage. The ejection from the wall can be used as an alternative way to get Mario to the right side of the screen to perform the Wrong Warp. However this is a very hard trick and must also be done in a very optimized manner to match the time from the optimal backwards jumps method instead, so this is likely useless.

**__World 8-1**__

Even if you do not slow down at all in this level, you may lose a framerule. To get a perfect time in 8-1, you need to not slow down anywhere in the level and hit the star block around the middle of this level. 75% of the time this will work as long as you just hit the block anywhere. 25% of the time it will only work if you hit the star block on the first possible frame. You can save yourself from having to perform a frame-perfect jump over 3 Goombas onto the wall behind them:
1. At the part, where you would usually jump over a piranha plant and stomp one of the 3 Goombas behind it, perform a jump standing next to the plant and jump over it and the 3 Goombas without stomping any of them. This will prevent two of the Koopas coming up from despawning.
2. Hit these 2 Koopas:

**__World 8-2**__

A perfect run will end with a high 342 on the timer, if you do not use the bullet bill glitch (343 is possible, but yields fireworks), and a high 337 or low 338, if you do the full flagpole glitch using a bullet bill.
The best known way to get a favorable bullet bill spawn is to wait a specific number of framerules on the title screen.

**__World 8-3**__

In this level you need to slow down to prevent the fireworks. You should finish with 242 left. Hitting the top of the flagpole is not strictly necessary, but you need to time it very well when jumping at the bottom.
If you know what framerule you're on, you can predict the pseudorandom enemy patterns. Otherwise you need to get lucky.

**__World 8-4**__

This is the only level where the framerule doesn't apply due to how the run is timed, so every frame matters.

Room 1
Just go right and enter the pipe. The piranha plant will mysteriously vanish before you touch it.
The big jump over the elevator has a 3 frame window. Instead you can jump onto the elevator, but it risks losing time, if you don't immediately jump off it again.
You can save up to 5 frames by doing a backwards jump at the stairs at the start:
1. Hold left while the level loads and let go at the first frame.
2. Press nothing for 1 frame and then press A and right.
3. Land on and run off the first stair.
4. Jump off the bottom stair.

Room 2
This is the room with the walljump. When you run off the first pipe while holding B and right all the time, you only have 1 frame to make your next jump. If you briefly press left or just let go of right, you have more leeway at the expense of 1 or 2 frames lost.
The walljump is explained in detail in the "Useful Glitches" guide. You will save about 5 frames if you do the walljump facing left instead of right. Depending on how well you do the walljump, you can expect to lose between 1 to 7 frames from "perfect" if you were facing left.
There is a consistent way of doing the walljump in this room: Do not hold B at the start of the room and only start pressing it when Mario has run off the pipe at the start. Then, if you do it forwards and don't slow down, you will have 2 frames for the walljump.

Room 3
This room has another Wrong Warp glitch, but it is much easier than the 4-2 one. It is surprisingly easy to lose lots of frames in this room.
You can perform a backwards jump after exiting the pipe leading into this room for a tiny time save of up to 3 frames.

Room 4
It doesn't matter, when Mario starts swimming as long as he doesn't reach maximum walking speed before you do it. If you hold right and touch the ground, Mario will be immediately reduced to maximum walking speed (2/3 of maximum swimming speed), so hold down+right, if you are about to briefly touch the ground (note that if you hit the pipe without entering it, you will not enter it, if you don't hold just right).

Room 5
Hope neither the Podoboo nor Bowser will kill your run due to pure randomness and hit the switch as far to the left as possible. A good run will have 314 or 315 remaining on the timer. 315 is not neccessarily faster than 314, it just means you did the third room well. The fastest possible ingame time is 316 with a backwards jump in the first room.


[big]**__Specific goal time strategies[/big]**__

The history of this game is driven by the desire to reach specific full second goal times. Although there is no longer a requirement to reach a new second boundary to constitute a new record, runs continue to be judged by what second they fall into and a time below 5 minutes is seen as significant by many people.

As a perfect run up until 8-4 and a decent 8-4 yields a time of about 4:57.4 and every mistake outside 8-4 costs a multiple of 0.35 seconds, one only needs to see how much time one has to waste and add up how much "mistakes" one is allowed to do.

4:59.XX
You have about 2.6 seconds to lose and still be below 5 minutes. A way to do it would be:
1. Perfect until 4-2.
2. Do the easy 3 jump 4-2 (first method in the video above). (0.35-0.7 seconds lost)
3. Perfect 8-1.
4. Do a low risk 8-2. (0.7-1.05 seconds lost)
5. Perfect 8-3. (memorize all possible patterns and use a split program to know, which one you're on)
6. Do the consistent walljump method.

4:58.XX
You have about 1.6 seconds to lose. A way to do it would be:
1. Perfect until 4-2.
2. Do the hard 3 jump 4-2 (second method in the video above). (0.35 seconds lost)
3. Perfect 8-1.
4. Do the regular 8-2. (0.7 seconds lost)
5. Perfect 8-3. (memorize all possible patterns and use a split program to know, which one you're on)
6. Do the consistent walljump method or risky walljump method depending on your pace.

Wait 1 framerule on the title screen. Do everything except the 2 jump 4-2.

Flagpole Glitch PAL Version

To make quite clear the Flagpole Glitch on PAL is quite simple requiring you to land on the right spot and timing the inputs correctly. 

Note: For this Guide i will use 1-1 as an example however the information can be applied for every level in the game (That has a Flagpole)

To start play level 1-1 as you normally would, Clearing the underground section in the proses. After leaving the pipe run and jump over the two goombas and land on the pipe in front of the stairs (or bricks if you will)

Next run and jump from the pipe to the Fifth step, upon landing on the fifth step do a full jump to land in front of the flagpole block (No Subpixel Precision Needed on PAL)

If done correctly you should have landed in-between the two blocks in front of the flagpole base (The mountain in the background is a good visual que making sure Mario's back foot is touching the edge of the mountain) 
Note: Upon landing No inputs should be pressed!

At this point Mario should start walking towards the flagpole base top right (R) After two Frames and Hold it for another 3 to 4

After the forth frame Simply Do a small jump and Mario should Clip into the Flagpole Block (Executing the Flagpole Glitch in the Proses)

Note: These inputs don't have to be exact and can vary depending on your timing, This is just what I am used to 

If you followed my inputs exactly it should look like this.

General Game Mechanics

[big]**__General Movement Rules[/big]**__

• You accelerate faster in the direction you are not facing. So if you need to bump into a wall, do a backwards jump into it.
• Maximum walking speed is 3/5 of maximum running speed.
• If you fall under the maximum walking speed during a jump, you cannot go above it again until you touch the ground again.
• If you touch the ground while holding right and letting go off B, you will be immediately reduced to maximum walking speed. If you need to shoot just as you land, briefly let go off right.
• Shooting while running on the ground will not slow you down in the slightest, if you repress B quickly enough. If you let go off B for too long, you will be reduced to maximum walking speed instantly.
• Acceleration in water is the same on the ground as in the water, but the maximum walking speed underwater is 2/3 of the maximum swimming speed.
• Holding right+down (or left+down) counts as holding neither button while standing on the ground and as holding right (or left) while in the air or swimming.
• If you touch underwater ground while holding right, you will be immediately reduced to maximum walking speed. If you need to only briefly touch the ground, hold right+down as it will yield less deacceleration than just holding right. Of course longer stays on the ground will reduce you to below maximum walking speed, so let go off down in these cases to stay at maximum walking speed.

• You can let go off right while swimming or jumping.
• When you need to reverse direction and get below the platform, you are standing on, (for example when getting to the warp pipes in 4-2), you can reverse some of your speed by bumping into a wall and holding the opposite direction. If the gap between the platform, you want to fall off and the wall is less than 3 blocks, it's faster to do so than to just reverse at the edge of the platform.


[big]**__Framerules[/big]**__

Every time you enter a new level, the game delays for a varying amount of time. The delay actually waits for a counter that loops every 21 frames (~0.35 seconds).

As an example, this means that if you complete a level in
• 1 frame, the level length will be N+21 frames
• 15 frames, the level length will be N+21 frames
• 20 frames, the level length will be N+21 frames
• 21 frames, the level length will be N+21 frames
• 22 frames, the level length will be N+42 frames
• 30 frames, the level length will be N+42 frames
• 42 frames, the level length will be N+42 frames
• 43 frames, the level length will be N+63 frames
And so on, where N is a constant minimum length of the black screen.

The only exception to this rule is the last level and certain events, during which the counter does not run, such as pauses, lag, transformations or entering pipes.


[big]**__Flagpole jump[/big]**__

If you hit a flagpole at the highest possible position, Mario will enter the castle about 11 frames faster. In most levels this saves a frame rule.


[big]**__Avoiding fireworks[/big]**__

The fireworks are set off when a level is completed with the last digit of the timer at 1, 3, or 6.
Getting them wastes time, so you should slow down instead of hitting a time that yields 3 or 6 fireworks.


[big]**__Despawning[/big]**__

There can only be 5 "enemies" at once on the screen. The following count towards this total: living enemies, dead enemies as long as their sprite is still on the screen, all moving platforms, climbing vines, the flag on the flagpole
When there are already 5 enemies on the screen, further enemies will simply not appear. This can be to your advantage, but also to your disadvantage.


[big]**__Hit Detection[/big]**__

It is possible to stand on the edge of a pipe even when a plant has risen out of it. There are a few pixels of room on both sides of the pipe that you can land on and immediately jump off again.

When a lot of hammers are on the screen, you can sometimes go through a hammer without getting hit, and sometimes a hammer can be invisible but still hit you.

You don't need to hit the top of an enemy to kill it. As long as you're moving downward as you hit the enemy, you'll kill it.

When entering a pipe with a piranha plant sticking out of it, jump into the middle and start holding down early, this will trigger the pipe transition and allow you to survive some encounters with the plant, which would normally kill you, if you did not hold down.

Also hit detection only happens every second frame.


[big]**__Known pseudorandom enemy patterns[/big]**__

The random number generation in this game is purely frame-based. If you reach an enemy at the same frame from reset, it will behave the same. Due to the 21 frame rule (which also applies to the title screen), it is possible to know what frame you are on and predict the behavior of the random elements.


[big]**__Backwards jump acceleration[/big]**__

When you need to accelerate from zero speed, you can do it faster if you jump a small jump backwards and steer to the opposite direction Mario is facing. This can be used to start a level faster and to accelerate faster after exiting a pipe.

You must land on the 3rd block from the top on the first pixel while not holding "B" - on the first frame with mario in the "running" animation (as opposed to the jump/falling animation), you hold only right (not "A" or "B"), then for exactly the next 2 frames, hold "B", then do a full jump on the 3rd frame (as shown). Hold all inputs until the jump is completed. By the time you reach the flagpole block, you will need to release "A" and "B", and hold "left" for exactly 3 frames (as shown), then jump on the 4th frame. If you do the first "jump" half of the trick correctly, you will clip into the block assuming you do a full jump, even if you mess up the "second" part. If you do not clip into the block, it means you messed up the jump.

Frame counter will obviously be different depending on your pace - as long as you hit the first pixel on the block, it doesn't matter if you do a full or partial jump. In order to "save" the framerule, you will need to be 4 frames from perfect on the coin pipe section, which means that some "380"s will not be fast enough to save the rule. Credit to runner "Sockfolder" for finding out exact inputs for an RTA run.

Tall pipe "slow" version - in this (slightly easier) version, the initial slowdown left press overlaps with jumping, you are unable to re-accelerate until you hit the ground. This version will probably result in losing a framerule

Lightning 4-2 Explanation

Overview:



Lightning is in essence regular 2 bump 4-2, but modified to be fast enough to save an extra framerule. The main timesave in the current method is by doing the second bump as a walljump off the pipe you enter. This combines a bump with the pipe entry as you don't need to accelerate up to full speed only to slow down fully to get in the pipe, but instead you only speed up to around max walking speed. 



While walljumping is faster, there's one glaring issue - without crazy luck, you can only get 9 pixels from it instead of the regular 10. As a result, you need to gain 11 more pixels to move the necessary 20 pixels forward on the screen, and you only have the time to do one bump, so an 11px bump is required (it's actually possible to get 10px from the walljump, but it works exactly the same way as 11px regular bump and is therefore very very hard and unlikely)



How 11 pixel bumps work:



The furthest you can get pushed from any bump is 11 pixels forward, but this is exceedingly rare. The reason for this links to how Mario gets pushed forwards in the first place. When Mario interacts with a block, the screen stops scrolling as Mario isn't moving horizontally. When Mario stops being in contact with the block, the screen will need to start scrolling again if the player is trying to move to the right. You would think the screen would start scrolling automatically to the right, but there is actually a delay of a handful of frames where the player can move to the right after bumping against a block where the screen does not scroll. During this delay, the player can move to the right without the screen trying to catch up, which causes the player sprite to move horizontally forward on the screen relative to the screen position - in other words, you gain xpos by moving to the right during the short delay where the screen isn't moving. 

Mario will be "pushed forward" by the distance that he is able to move in this frame. For example, if the player is able to move forward by 5 pixels in this frame, they will gain 5 xpos. To gain the greatest amount of xpos from bumping, the player needs to move to the right as quickly as possible, but this isn't as easy as it sounds because not all accelerations are created equally. For example, if the player is very close to the block when they bump against it they may continue "brushing against the block" even once they're not actually in contact with it. This is what causes slow walljumps where the player appears to barely move to the right: they had the wrong horizontal positioning when doing a bump, be it against a block or a pipe. As a result, the player needs to be in a precise horizontal window to get an optimal bump.



There is also a hidden attribute that affects the speed after a bump called subspeed. Subspeed is the fractional component of Mario's speed which is used in calculations to determine his position, but in many cases it simply acts as an acceleration force: high subspeed => faster acceleration; low subspeed => slower acceleration. This is a little bit of an oversimplification but it's honestly good enough in the majority of cases. As the player is trying to move to the right as quickly as possible, they want the highest possible subspeed as they hit the block.



All in all, this means that the player needs close to the highest subspeed possible (top 1/16th of values), and one specific subpixel (1/40 chance if doing a random bump). They also need to hit the block they are bumping against as high as possible, otherwise the player will brush against it too much and not gain enough xpos. This means that if a player were to do a random bump, assuming they hit the block as early as possible, there is still only a 1/640 chance they'd get 11 pixels.

What we do about this:



This 11 pixel bump is required for the whole walljump idea to work, so we need a method of doing this consistently. Originally, people thought to use the elevator as it appears that the elevator is the best type of object to bump off due to the fact that it moves downwards - you should in theory be brushing against the block for less time as on top of the player moving upwards, the elevator is moving downwards away from you. A setup was found with a ridiculous set of inputs (something along the lines of R L A _ _ _ R) which Niftski used in the very first lightning 4-2, but these inputs were virtually impossible on controller without crazy workarounds and even on keyboard with absurd. Luckily, I'm pretty sure that the whole "elevator block being the best" theory was pretty much just incorrect, and it works just as well as any other block. 



Jonnyboy then found a set of inputs that allows the player to get an 11 pixel bump off of the higher coin block at the start of the level, which is what we use today. On top of removing the need to actually get down to the elevator, which requires either two frame perfect jumps or a frame perfect four frame jump, it also used a much easier set of inputs. You first lose one subpixel either by doing a 1 frame right release or in my case flicking down for a frame, then do either the inputs R _ L A R, dubbed "fake a2" inputs as they are the same as a certain set of FFA inputs, or R L L+A R(+A) while jumping on a specific frame from the ground. Both of these inputs get an 11 pixel bump, although they vary slightly in the subspeed the player has after the bump, which is important later on when we get to the pipe entry.



You then need to terminate your jump precisely, as Mario will accelerate the fastest with a specific jump height, and jumping higher or lower will be slightly slower as he'll reach running speed later. This means that there's a frame perfect A release in there to boot 😄 

In total, this means that you have to do a one frame down press, one of two sets of fast inputs, and a frame perfect A release just to get the necessary 11 pixel bump.

Second wiggle / Beginning of pipe entry:



While this walljump method is faster than regular 2 bump, it's not quite fast enough to save the framerule without fast accel in most cases, with a typical pipe entry at least. Most people think that to enter a pipe without scrolling the screen, you need to come to a complete stop before entering. Doing this only allows you to get G into warpzone, but you need I into warpzone to save the framerule with a standard perfect warpzone without accel. With G into warpzone you need to get a perfect accel and a perfect regular warpzone to barely save the framerule, which is what Niftski did in the first lightning 4-2. It turns out though that you can enter a pipe with speed under specific circumstances, which means the player doesn't have to waste time coming to a full stop, and this is what allows us to get I into warpzone and save lightning 4-2 framerule without an accel in the warpzone.



I'm not sure if you know how pipe entry works but if you do then I'll save you time - it's just smb2j 5-2 blazit but you want to not scroll the screen instead of scrolling the screen while being at the highest speed possible.

If you don't know how this works, it's to do with how the game checks to see if Mario is moving before entering a pipe. The way the game checks if Mario is moving is to see if he has moved at least one pixel to the right compared to the previous frame. This doesn't mean he has moved 16 subpixels to the right, but simply that he has moved to another subpixel: he could have EF0 subpixels one frame and F00 the next and that would count as him moving, but he could have E00 subpixels one frame and EF0 the next and it wouldn't count. If Mario is detected as moving, the screen scrolls, but it he hasn't moved over to the next pixel in that crucial frame, the screen will not scroll.



This is hugely important as we need the screen to not scroll for wrong warp, otherwise we get right warped and sent to the coin cache. However, this adds an unfortunate element of luck to the trick:



- If Mario wants to not move by a pixel in one frame, he needs less than 16 speed, where speed is measured in subpixels per frame, as one pixel = 16 subpixels and therefore guarantees he moves by one.

- With speed 1, Mario will move by one subpixel in the next frame. Say he has E00 subpixels, he will move to E10. Or E10, he will move to E20, etc. The only bad case for this is if he starts with EF0 subpixels, where he will then move to F00 and move to the next pixel, which scrolls the screen. This means that with speed 1, there is a 15/16 chance that the screen does not scroll depending on Mario's subpixel positioning before the pipe entry.

- With speed 2, Mario will move by two subpixels in the next frame - E00 to E20, E10 to E30, etc. This means that the only bad subpixels are EE0 and EF0, which will put him on F00 and F10 respectively and scroll the screen. So speed 2 has a 14/16 chance of not scrolling the screen.

- This continues downwards as you gain higher and higher speeds - speed 3 has a 13/16 chance of not scrolling, speed 4 has a 12/16 chance, etc

- As a result, the highest speed you can enter the pipe with is speed 15, which has a 1/16 chance of not scrolling the screen, and every speed value above that will scroll the screen 100% of the time.

With 5-2 blazit in smb2j, you want the screen to scroll, so you want the greatest amount of speed possible to maximise the chance of the screen scrolling as getting to speed 16 where it will work 100% of the time is near-impossible

This is why in 5-2 you want a low xpos clip, early right press, fast L>D inputs, etc

In lightning 4-2 you want the other outcome - the screen not scrolling - but you also want to get in the pipe as fast as possible to avoid the time loss of having to slow down. Optimally, this means that you would want to enter the pipe with speed 15, as you've slowed down the least beforehand. This is actually what the TAS does!

Niftski found that with the right set of inputs for the second backwards jump wiggle, you could consistently get the same subpixels and subspeed approaching the pipe entry, which means you can get the same luck for the pipe entry consistently. The only issue is: you have to do the same second backwards jump each time.

The first set of inputs he found required double fake a2 inputs - fake a2 inputs for the bump, and then the same inputs on frame 000 for the second wiggle. The trouble with this is that fake a2 inputs are rather difficult on controller as getting lots of frames of nothing isn't easy when you're doing a fast dpad wiggle. Having said that though, lekukie and I are pretty much the only people who find RLLR inputs way easier with controller, although we are also really the only two controller people to have grinded lightning. Niftski and I then found an alternative set of inputs that were MUCH better however: you can do EITHER fake a2 or RLLR inputs for the bump, and do either R L L R+A, R L _ R+A, or in some cases fake a2 or R L L+A R inputs all for the second wiggle. This totals to something like 6 different combinations of inputs between the two backwards jumps, which is far more than any other setup found which were limited to 1 or 2 at most. This second wiggle has to be on frame 255 from the ground by the way, otherwise your subspeed will be manipped incorrectly and you'll get the "bad luck" for the pipe entry.



After doing the second backwards jump, you have to hold D+R while you land on the pipe and jump the frame you land to pause your subspeed for a frame, which raises it when you get to the pipe entry. If you don't do this D+R, your subspeed will be too low at the walljump and you'll again get the "bad luck" for the pipe entry.



All in all, this sets you up for an I into warpzone pipe entry all the way to just before the walljump, where the final part of the trick comes in: the pipe entry

Pipe Entry:



Now that you're set up having done the correct sets of wiggle inputs, you have to get into the pipe. At first people just did a tap jump off of the pipe, pressed left to slow down, and entered the pipe once they had stopped, but pressing left is inconsistent and messes with subpixels/subspeed so it's not any good for I into warpzone. Instead what we do now is a one frame jump for the walljump to reach the ground as fast as possible as you slow down quicker, then a frame perfect right release to slow down to 15 speed, and a frame perfect down press to enter the pipe.



If you release right too early, you have too little speed and the luck doesn't align to not scroll the screen.

If you release right too late, you run on the pipe which speeds you up fast, so the screen will always scroll.

If you press down too early, you have too much speed and the screen scrolls.

If you press down too late, you have too little speed and the luck doesn't align to not scroll the screen since you haven't stopped.

If you get a two framer, you touch the ground later so can't get into the pipe fast enough to get I into warpzone (and you aren't set up for any sort of pipe entry anyway)

If you fail the walljump, you cry 😭



It's pretty difficult although to be honest it's probably the easiest part of the entire trick since the inputs can be decomposed fairly easily, unlike with backwards jump wiggles.



With all of this, you should get I into warpzone, which is fast enough to save the framerule with a regular perfect warpzone.



Warpzone:



Years ago (in days of old, when magic filled the air, twas in the darkest depths of mordor... i like led zeppelin) when people went for perfect warpzone they would just jump on the earliest frame possible, do a very early left press and get a good pipe entry. The issue with this strategy is that you have to do a very early left press which isn't the easiest to time, and jumping a frame late is very hard to save 

It was known for years that you could save an extra frame in warpzone compared to regular "perfect warpzone" but nobody knew how it worked. Niftski found a setup for this with a fast accel in 2020, but it wasn't understood very well so we never found one for no accel, until September(?) 2021 when I found one. I won't go into great detail about how it works because honestly this is getting waaaaaaaaay too long, but the jist is that if you hit the wall as far left as possible and have high subspeed Mario will accelerate very fast to the left and 'clip' into the wall the way he usually does when you do warpzone, so by doing a D+R to lose subpixels and a right release you can save an extra frame.



Either Niftski or I then found that by jumping a frame later for the extra frame save setup at the top mushroom of the warpzone, you have slightly higher subpixels, which happens to make regular perfect warpzone completely free! If you jump on frame 116 from the cloud, the standard earliest frame to jump, you just hold right up until the wall and press left exactly when you hit the wall (a 3 frame window i think) and you get an easy perfect warpzone with an easy pipe entry. If you jump a frame later on frame 117, you hold right up to the wall and press left ever so slightly earlier, and it again sets you up for an easy perfect warpzone without having to tryhard the pipe entry. This is much easier than doing the regular setupless perfect warpzone strategy as jumping a frame late by the cloud is very easily saveable, and you don't have to worry about dumb early left press timings. Additionally, if you jump a frame early for the D+R setup you can just go for extra frame save which is also very easy, and if you jump a frame late for the D+R it's not too hard to get perfect warpzone either.

All in all, this gets lightning 4-2 with zero frames to spare. This trick is obviously very very very very very very difficult, but is honestly overrated in difficulty and is very conquerable for the average player - Dagamerboi was the fifth or sixth person to get lightning and he had a 4:59 as his pb at the time, and he played on xbox controller. I've probably done lightning somewhere between 300 and 500 times, and Niftski has a similar amount, probably a little higher than mine. To my knowledge nobody else is really close to that, although Jonnyboy has done lightning around 50 times and LeKukie claims to have done it over 100 times (not so sure about that lol). Niftski and I also have also done lightning 4-2 simultaneously multiple times, the first of which is on his channel, so it definitely gets consistent. I could probably see people being close to 10% with it or maybe even more once people seriously start going for it on runs. Only issue is that it REALLY hurts the hands if people don't take super regular breaks 😬

Minus World Ending Strategy

[big]**__Level by level explanations[/big]**__

**__World 1-1**__
When you go into the underground section, start holding "right" when Mario has fallen about half the way down and jump as soon as you're able, trying to land on the very edge of the bricks in the middle. The farther to the left you land, the sooner you start accelerating to full speed. When the pipe transition happens, you should have 380 on the timer.

Later just hit the flagpole at the very top. If you have 370 remaining on the timer, the level is flawless. If you have 369 remaining on the timer, it can also be flawless, but it's very likely you missed the framerule.

**__World 1-2 (Warp to -1)**__

The first difficult part here is jumping over the Koopa with the Goomba directly behind it. The best way to do it is to run at full speed and do a jump where you hold A for 1 to 3 frames and then immediately jump again.

There are two different methods to glitch through the wall at the end of the level and reach the Minus World:
One is to become big Mario and glitch through the wall by duck-jumping into the corner. The fastest mushroom to grab is at the start of the level, but this makes the small jump section with the Koopa followed by 2 Goombas harder. The mushroom at the end of the level can be grabbed quickly with a mid-air jump.
The other is to go through the pipe as small Mario. This trick is explained in detail in the "Useful Glitches" guide and is very difficult, but would allow for a World Record while doing the Minus Worlds completely safely.

**__World -1**__

A very easy level except for the flagpole glitch at the end. If you don't do it, hit the flagpole in the middle, so that you go into the castle without touching the ground.
If you want to do it, let go off right, drop down landing just in front of the block below the flagpole and immediately swim. If you spend more than a few frames on the ground, you will trigger the fireworks (which is still faster than not doing the flagpole).

**__World -2**__

A very simple level usually. There are some very tricky framerules, so check the patterns of the Cheep Cheeps with the strategies you use before doing attempts.

**__World -3**__

There are 2 turnarounds in this level. As big Mario it is faster to break through the ceiling instead. It is faster still but also more difficult to glitch through the ceiling with a duck-jump into a corner.
As small Mario you could theoretically glitch through the wall and skip the turnarounds too, but it is too difficult. When doing the turnarounds start holding left and bump into the opposing walls to reverse your speed.

It's important to note that RTA and TAS time the run differently. RTA timing starts when the timer appears in 1-1 and TAS timing starts on power on. They both end on hitting the axe in 8-4.
Also TAS allows left+right, which is banned in RTA, but RTA allows waiting on the start screen for good RNG without time loss.

A few days ago I made this Emulator Setup Tutorial for new players who wish to make a great experience for viewers when actual hardware (NES) is out of reach. Those who wish to make a nice stream/recording of their attempts and have no clue about how to start may be interested. This tutorial may be useful for most NES games. The tutorial includes:

- Which software I use: OBS, Nestopia, LiveSplit and NintendoSpy (Input Display).
- How I capture each screen with OBS.
- Which controller I use and how I capture my inputs.
- How I control the LiveSplit.
- Videos captured from cellphone camera and videos captured from OBS for comparison.

Small Fire Warpless Framerule Patterns

So - Now that Pellsson's newest version of the practice rom (3.1) includes small fire from Title Screen (state "3"), I decided to route some of the rules for the warpless levels with important "rng" (3-4, 5-2, 5-3, 5-4, 6-4) for SMALL FIRE MARIO

Roy has already done this with BIG fire... but interestingly, small fire has totally different "rng" than big fire...

For example, if you enter framerule 1910 (5-4) as small fire mario without having lost powerups, you will encounter "good" bars... if you enter the SAME FRAMERULE as big fire mario (assuming you haven't lost powerups) you'll encounter a more difficult bar pattern.

This happens because there are several variables that determine "rng" (four I think?) and some of them pause during powerup grabs ("framerules" for instance), and some do not, but keep running at normal speed. Because of this, picking up additional powerups or dying effectively scrambles your predictable "randomness". Because small fire picks up THREE powerups and big fire picks up TWO powerups, they have different pseudorandom patterns on the same framerules - so RoyLGamer's Big Fire guide ( https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/guide/fv9u0 ) is incredibly helpful for big fire and worthless for small fire (or small, or if you lose and regain a powerup, or die)

Fortunately, that exists now! I have mapped the rules specifically for My (Darpey) and Xeroxfiend's patterns (because those are the two people that I am aware of that are using small fire to go for sub-19:40 runs)... but I'd be happy to map the patterns to any person that's trying for a sub-19:40 or so small fire run.

Assuming you mapped your rules correctly, you could use these in tournaments as well for a slightly faster (and safe) run.

Shout out to Pellsson for figuring all this madness out... had to do a LOT of testing to see exactly how many frames to "delay" the rng in order to get it to match up to reality.

Yes, I know there are already five other Any% guides, but I thought I might put in my two cents for anybody who’s just getting into this and is aiming for a time in the 5:30-6:00 range.

Please Note: A few of these strategies will not work for Second Quest since the enemies move too fast.



World 1-1
Minimum Time To Aim For: 369

Your biggest obstacle in this level is going to be the underground section. If you’re trying to get out of there with 380 in-game seconds left on the timer, you need to jump onto the platform and either jump off on the left side with a full jump or either jump off on the right side with a small-as-possible jump. Getting that 380 can be really hard even if you think you did it perfectly, and you’ll still be on pace even if you don’t get it, so don’t sweat it too much. If you’re just trying to get a 379, you can skid to a stop while you’re on the platform and easily go inside the pipe.

After you get back outside, you’ll need to figure out how to tackle the staircase. What I do is aim for the fourth stair and do two full jumps afterward, but to my knowledge, any stair works just fine, so do whatever you’re most comfortable with. Just know that whatever jumps you end up doing are going to be precise and may take some practice. 



World 1-2
Minimum Time To Aim For: 341

My advice is to run-jump into the block that’s underneath the four coins and kick the second Koopa to the right to take out all of the other enemies. That way, you only have to make one semi-precise jump over/under the Goomba that tries to land on top of you.

If you pull off a good turnaround into the warp zone and get into the left pipe without any slowdowns, you’ll end the level somewhere in the low 340s.



World 4-1
Minimum Time To Aim For: 340

I honestly don’t even think you should need my help with this one. The staircase might trip you up on occasion, but other than that, this is a level that I think anybody can get a perfect time on within 15 minutes of practice (and I do mean anybody).



World 4-2
Minimum Time To Aim For: 351

I’m not going to go over how to do Fast 4-2 here. For that, check out Kosmic’s tutorial and skip to 10:07: https://youtu.be/kyZ4yF3ynsA

Anyway, you want to land on the second part of the missing floor (be careful not to let go of A too early), Then jump again into the alcove. Avoid the three Goombas and jump onto the elevator, and with a decently-timed jump, you should be able to hit the block that has the vine in it. Two blocks to the right, you need to hit a hidden block that’ll help you get to the vine and reach the warp zone. After practicing this level a few times, you should consistently be able to get out of there with a mid-370s time.

The warp zone has another staircase and the ceiling here is even lower than it was in 1-2, so if you’re trying to do it optimally, you’ll need an even better turnaround.



World 8-1
Minimum Time To Aim For: 190

If you’re like me and you’re not very good at doing pipe jumps, then the hardest part of the level is going to be getting over Pipe A. The reason this is as tricky as it is is because there are three Goombas right after it. You’ll need to jump earlier than you think so you can kill the second Goomba and safely make it through. If you jump too early, you’ll get eaten by the Piranha Plant, and if you jump too late, you’ll run into the third Goomba and die (there’s a chance you’ll jump on the third Goomba and be safe if you jump just a bit later though).

Soon after that, you’ll get to what I like to call the “boxing ring”, which is this Paratroopa that’s in between two block towers. If this is your first run, I recommend jumping on top of the boxing ring and doing another jump off of the row of blocks to also avoid the next two Paratroopas, but you can also do slow jumps in and out of the ring if that’s more your speed. Doing that optimally will save five in-game seconds, but obviously, it’s riskier.

Again, a couple more slowdowns will have to be made if you can’t manage pipe jumps, but the rest of the level is manageable.



World 8-2
Minimum Time To Aim For: 310

The first half of this level isn’t much more than what you’re used to by now. You’ll have to land on the second stair of the staircase and do two full jumps afterwards, but if you find that to be too much, you can hide on the third stair and wait for the Paratroopa to pass you. After that, you just need to hop on top of some Bill Blasters and you’ll be home free until you get to three Paratroopas that I like to call “Charlie’s Devils”.

The reason I call them Charlie’s Devils is that they are never doing the same thing twice unless you happen to be on the same framerule (that’s 21 frames, or 0.35 seconds), so for beginners, getting past them quickly, safely, and consistently is pretty much out of the question. If you go down Pipe A, Charlie’s Devils will despawn and getting through the rest of the level will be a lot easier if you’re good at timing your jumps at full speed, but I’m told that this costs more time than it saves, so pick your poison.



World 8-3
Minimum Time To Aim For: 239

This level is without a doubt going to be the hardest one for you if you’re a beginner. This level is infamous for having eight Hammer Bros in it, and just like with Charlie’s Devils, where they are depends on how long it took for you to get here in the first place. Not all hope is lost, however. There is a Google Doc that you can use to memorize all 132 of the Hammer Bros. patterns which I’ll leave here: https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/guide/zef9c

But if all that is too much for you, I’ll tell you what I like to do. I brush up against the second Bill Blaster (they don’t fire if you’re touching them so use that to your advantage if you can), I go on the bottom when dealing with the first pair of Hammer Bros, I go on top when dealing with the second pair of Hammer Bros, and I jump over the last four Hammer Bros. Then I jump up to the third stair on the staircase and fall to the flagpole below. You’ll still make it if you’re going at full speed.

If I had to give a rough estimate, I would say I’ve had a 35% success rate of using this strat. If that’s too low for your liking, then I recommend showing up to this level with a Fire Flower.



World 8-4
Minimum Time To Aim For: 270

First Room: Start holding Right+B and jump once you land on the second stair. Keep going until you get to the lava pit. If you’re going at full speed, you only have a three frame (0.05 second) window to make this jump. The safer but slower strat is to fall onto the metal raft and jump from there. Don’t worry about the Piranha Plant in Pipe C, it’ll always despawn before you can run into it.

Second Room: There’s a lot of enemies here that can screw you up, so I recommend taking this one at a slower pace. Hit the invisible block, watch out for the two Paratroopas, and hop inside Pipe E.

Third Room: This one is pretty straightforward. You have the option of going into Pipe A if you scroll your screen far enough (if you don’t scroll far enough you’ll end up back in the first room), which is faster when you do it optimally, but I’m personally more comfortable with Pipe G because you’re much less likely to die to Cheep Cheeps doing that. 

Fourth Room: Not really much I can say about this one. I recommend playing it safe here too if possible.

Fifth Room: Start holding Right+B again and do a full jump once you get onto the ground so you can kill the Hammer Bro before he becomes a threat. Do a medium jump in between the Podoboo and the wall and you’ll be face to face with Bowser. If he jumps towards you, run under him. If he jumps away from you, jump over him. There’s a decent chance you’ll survive his hammers since the game only allows for six hitboxes to be on-screen at a time.

Useful Glitches

[big]**__Wrong Warp[/big]**__

The Wrong Warp glitch occurs when a pipe takes you somewhere other than its intended destination.
Theory: The game can have only one "entry point" (a pipe or vine) per screen. The reason lies in how the game is designed: There is just one global variable in the game RAM that determines where pipes or vines in the current screen lead. Once the screen scrolls far enough for the next target label to be loaded from the level data, all entry points in the current screen will lead to that destination instead.

• If Mario is far on the right side of the screen, the entry point variable will be out of date, so a new entry point will lead to the target of the previous one. (Example: In 4-2 of SMB1, if Mario is far enough on the right side of the screen, he can use the pipe to go to the warp room since the destination info of the vine is still valid. Making the vine appear is not required for this glitch. The only thing needed is that the screen hasn't scrolled too far when the pipe is entered.)
• If the screen is ahead of Mario (Mario is on the left side of screen), the variable will have updated too soon, so you can access a future entry point's target from an earlier entry point. (Example: In 8-4 of SMB1, in the area before the water area, instead of going in the pipe after the lava pit, go a little past the previous pipe, and then turn around and go in that pipe, and it will take you to the water area instead of taking you back to the beginning of the level.)

Methods of getting Mario to the left side of the screen:
• Just move back.
Methods of getting Mario to the right side of the screen:
• If you enter a wall, the wall will automatically transport Mario towards the right edge of the screen without scrolling.
• If Mario bumps into the left edge of an obstacle (wall, pipe, coin block etc.) while jumping, the screen scrolling will momentarily stop even if Mario continues to move to the right. Since Mario accelerates faster in the direction he isn't facing, you should use this trick while jumping backwards (with Mario facing left).


[big]**__Walljump[/big]**__

A walljump is when you jump towards a wall and somehow Mario's foot catches the wall and allows to jump again, boosting from the wall.
Walljumps happen because the game does a floor check (a simple "is there a solid block below him?" test) even during a wall-ejection. Wall-ejection is SMB's mechanism for pushing Mario out of a wall he has partially entered.

To perform a walljump, you need two things:
• Some horizontal speed
• Mario's feet must hit the wall exactly at a block boundary (every 16 pixels)

Depending on your precise position you may not be able to catch the wall even if you jump correctly. Most of the time you have 1 frame to do the jump, but rarely you have 2 or even more.

As Mario accelerates faster in the opposite direction, you should do a backwards jump before attempting a walljump to save 0.1 seconds. If you jump after the first possible frame, you will turn back around and lose the 0.1 seconds.


[big]**__Half flagpole glitch[/big]**__

Complete the level without lowering the flag by glitching into the base block of the flagpole and touching the flapole from inside. Doing so is faster than lowering the flag.

[big]**__Full flagpole glitch[/big]**__

Enter the block below the flagpole and touch the flagpole from inside the block to skip lowering the flag and get ejected to the left side of the block, which then skips the routines of the flag lowering and of Mario walking to the castle and entering it.
On the PAL version you can do this glitch directly. On NTSC this glitch only works if you stomp an enemy just before you touch the block below the flagpole or if you do it underwater or if you jump from inside the ground.
On the All-Stars version this glitch doesn't work anymore.


[big]**__Going through walls as big Mario[/big]**__

When Mario is big, he can simply perform a duck-jump into the corner and start walking. This is because his head will be well inside the ceiling, enabling the ejection to the right.


[big]**__Going through walls as small Mario[/big]**__

**__Jump into a solid object below a floor**__

For the purpose of activating this glitch, any solid object (including pipes) counts as a floor. It is really difficult to perform, but here are the instructions.

1. You need the right speed. If the object is only 2 blocks tall, such as the pipe in the end of 1-2, you can not jump into it while running. Deaccelerate before jumping. If you have too high speed, you'll just find yourself standing on top of the object instead of inside it.
2. You need the right position. The right position is: as near as possible. You are too near, if when you jump toward the object, you'll bump into it without getting ejected pixel by pixel.
3. Immediately before the wall starts ejecting Mario, start steering away from it. This causes the wall to pull you in instead of push you out.
4. Immediately after your vertical movement stops, start moving to the direction you want to go. If the wall is ejecting you now, you failed some of the previous steps or you had a bad subpixel position.

The easiest way to perform this trick is into 2-block tall obstacles at walking speed.
1. Do a minimal height jump (hold A for 1 frame) at the exactly right distance.
◦ You're too close if you bump into the wall without a chance to counter the ejection.
◦ You held A for more than 1 frame if you land on top of the floor.
2. As the wall-eject is about to start, hold the opposite direction from the obstacle.
3. Once Mario lands in the wall, start walking normally.
◦ If the wall just ejects Mario, you were too far from the wall when you jumped.


**__Jump into a wall just below a solid ceiling and walk through it**__

To perform the trick, do a walljump at a position right below the ceiling. When you get foothold, jump immediately. When you land, jump again. When you land again, jump again. Each jump embeds you deeper into the wall. Usually three or four jumps are enough for passing through.

During each of the jumps, you need to steer in the direction opposite to where you're traveling. Otherwise Mario gets ejected.


**__Jump into a solid wall and walk through it**__

It is possible to perform the wall-entry trick even without a ceiling. However, it requires extremely precise positioning and speed. This is the hardest of all of the tricks.

Instructions: You will need to have the right X-subpixel position for this to work. A subpixel is a position component which is not rendered onscreen. In this game a pixel is made up of 16 subpixels. Try jumping into a wall. You are either pushed out immediately without having entered the wall at all, or otherwise you might have been able to partially enter the wall. The latter is what you want, but there is no way to effectively influence the subpixel value besides holding left for a few frames while running and hoping for the best outcome.

1. Jump towards a wall from a position as close to it as possible (but not touching it).
2. Before the wall starts ejecting you, immediately start steering away from it. This causes the wall to pull you in instead of pushing you out.
3. As soon as you land inside the wall, repeatedly jump while moving away from the wall.
4. After you have entered the wall deep enough, start moving in the direction you want to go as soon as you land. If the wall is ejecting you now, you failed the previous steps or had a bad subpixel position.


[big]**__Off-screen wall climbing[/big]**__

This trick is trivial to perform. When there is a hole on the left side of the screen, you can cram Mario in between the screen edge and the wall and climb up. Mario will be unable to fall down. It can be used to reach the ceiling of the dungeon in places where there normally is no way to do that.

By jumping repeatedly and steering to the left, the trick can also be used for entering the wall.


[big]**__Jump in mid-air[/big]**__

If you grab a mushroom in mid-air, you can jump again. To do this let go of A before you touch the mushroom and then hold A until the transformation is over.


[big]**__Ducking while swimming[/big]**__

Duck on the ground and start swimming, Mario will still look as usual, but his hitbox is as though he was small and he will be unable to shoot fireballs. The optimal way to start this is:
• accelerate to maximum speed
• let go off right and hold down (this will not slow you down)
• briefly touch the ground
• press A
• hold right until you are back to maximum speed
Repeat this each time you have to touch the ground.
To stop ducking and enable fireballs again simply hold down+right and touch the ground.


[big]**__Ducking while falling[/big]**__

Just hold down before sliding off a platform and Mario will have the small hitbox despite looking big.


[big]**__The Minus World[/big]**__

This is a well-known glitch which occurs when Mario glitches behind the wall in 1-2 in SMB1 and enters the first pipe.
The minus world is basically just a random location of the game ROM, it is not a real world. It wasn't designed that way ― it's just an oversight of the programmers that you can get into the pipe before the correct warp labels are assigned.

In the NES version of Super Mario Bros., the "minus world" was a looping, uncompleteable copy of world 2-2. In the FDS version, however, it is an underwater 1-3, 7-3, and an underground 4-4, making it completable.
Completing the game this way would give the "in another castle" message, but would return to the title screen as if 8-4 had been beaten; hard mode and the level selection become accessible, as well.

Warpless Strategy

**General note:** Using the fire power is faster since killing Bowser skips the bridge collapse animation.
The simplest and earliest way to get the fire power is to grab a mushroom at the start of 1-1 and a flower at at the start of 1-2.
Harder but about 2 seconds faster is to get the mushroom in 1-3 and the flower in 1-4.

[big]**__Level by level explanations[/big]**__

**__World 1-1**__

When you go into the underground section, start holding "right" when Mario has fallen about half the way down and jump as soon as you're able, trying to land on the very edge of the bricks in the middle. The farther to the left you land, the sooner you start accelerating to full speed. When the pipe transition happens, you should have 380 on the timer.

Later just hit the flagpole at the very top. If you have 370 remaining on the timer, the level is flawless. If you have 369 remaining on the timer, it can also be flawless, but it's very likely you missed the framerule.

To get the mushroom do a backwards jump onto the Goomba at the start, hit the power-up block and go to the left and onto the blocks above you to get the mushroom.

**__World 1-2**__

The first difficult part here is jumping over the Koopa with the Goomba directly behind it. The best way to do it is to run at full speed and do a jump where you hold A for 1 to 3 frames and then immediately jump again.

To get the flower hit the very first block and then jump onto it. Having the fire power will make the level significantly easier.

**__World 1-3**__

To get the mushroom jump between the first moving platform and the power-up block backwards and jump onto the block from the right. The fastest way to grab is is to slightly clip into the right side of the block and grab the power-up while it is still inside. The fastest possible framerule is extremely tight.

**__World 1-4**__

To get the flower do a backwards jump to the first block and grab the power-up like the one in 1-3.
Bowser needs 5 hits to kill. When you shoot the first 2 at the right time, you will always get 2 hits in early. Since there can only be 2 fireballs at once on the screen and they also keep counting towards that maximum as long as their explosion animation is still on the screen, you essentially need 3 salves of shots to kill him, which requires either some slowdown or to run below him and do 1 or 2 shots left.

**__World 4-1**__

This level is trivial. Jump at the top of the flagpole and you have a perfect time.

TODO: 4-2 through 7-4

**__World 8-1**__

To get a perfect time in 8-1, you need to have hit the star block around the middle of this level. (The inconsistency in Any% runs is not present in this category.)
You can make the part with the 3 Goombas in front of a wall easier:
1. At the part, where you would usually jump over a piranha plant and stomp one of the 3 Goombas behind it, perform a jump standing next to the plant or kill the plant and jump over the 3 Goombas without stomping any of them. This will prevent two of the Koopas coming up from despawning.
2. Hit these 2 Koopas:

3. Jump behind the 2 Goombas and over the wall.

**__World 8-2**__

A perfect run will end with a high 342 on the timer, if you do not use the bullet bill glitch (343 is possible, but yields fireworks), and a high 337 or low 338, if you do use the bullet bill glitch.
If you are still Fire Mario, a save way to get a low 342 is to bump into the pipe, which forces a slowdown, and shoot the plant. To get the best framerule, you can slow down just so you don't hit the pipe, it's a bit more difficult and risky.

Several people pick up the mushroom in this level as it doesn't cost much time and gives you a free hit in 8-3.

A good bullet bill spawn can save up to 2 framerules (0.7 seconds) by performing a full flagpole glitch using it.

**__World 8-3**__

In this level you need to slow down to prevent the fireworks. You should finish with 242 left.

This level seems to be trivial as Fire Mario, but you can cause problems, if you are not careful. Don't wait too long with shooting the Hammer Brothers, they may jump directly on you as you pass them. Don't shoot them too early either: If they die that way they can throw a hammer to the right, which can be hard to dodge.

**__World 8-4**__

This is the only level where the framerule doesn't apply due to how the run is timed, so every frame matters.

Room 1
Just go right and enter the pipe. The piranha plant will mysteriously vanish before you touch it.
The big jump over the elevator has a 3 frame window. Instead you can jump onto the elevator, but it risks losing time, if you don't immediately jump off it again.

Room 2
This is the room with the walljump. When you run off the first pipe while holding B and right all the time, you only have 1 frame to make your next jump. If you briefly press left or just let go of right, you have more leeway at the expense of 1 or 2 frames lost.
The walljump is explained in detail in the "Useful Glitches" guide and saves about 0.7 seconds. You will save about 5 frames if you do the walljump facing left instead of right.
There is a consistent way of doing the walljump in this room: Do not hold B at the start of the room and only start pressing it when Mario has run off the pipe at the start. Then, if you do it forwards and don't slow down, you will have 2 frames for the walljump. 

Room 3
This room has a Wrong Warp glitch, but it is pretty easy to do.

Room 4
It doesn't matter, when Mario starts swimming as long as he doesn't reach maximum walking speed before you do it. If you hold right and touch the ground, Mario will be immediately reduced to maximum walking speed (2/3 of maximum swimming speed), so let go off right, if you are about to briefly touch the ground. Note that Mario will immediately lose all speed, if he hits the pipe without entering it and he will not enter it, if you don't hold right.
If you are still big, make sure to duck while swimming (see the "Useful Glitches" guide for details).

Room 5
As Fire Mario shoot the Hammer Brother, the small Mario method of just jumping on him doesn't work. As big Mario duck-jump onto him. If you get hit by the Podoboo, the invincibility lasts until the axe.
Theoretically it would be faster to kill Bowser than to take a hit from him (dodging him without a hit is of course the fastest), but shooting the 2 early fireballs instead of duck-jumping also places you at a higher risk of being hit by the Podoboo.

It's important to note that RTA and TAS time the run differently. RTA timing starts when the timer appears in 1-1 and TAS timing starts on reset (197 frames difference). They both end on hitting the axe in 8-4.
Also TAS allows left+right, which is banned in RTA, but RTA allows waiting on the start screen for good RNG without time loss.

Warpless Tutorial (Eddie/19:03 Route)

Possibly the easiest and most consistent way to get 19:03 in Warpless (Not for those who are new to the category)
