You can unlock Sirena by making Shadow Mario drop Yoshi on the roof

I don’t think Noki 6 can ever be jumpless, just getting out of the glass box at the beginning takes a spinjump and two wallkicks, but the category could be to beat the game in less than 15 jumps (or whatever amount is RTA-viable)

Noki 1 is done by bouncing on the goop boulders that roll down the cliff, but good luck getting that non-TAS:

The A Button Challenge got really active last year, the only levels that require pressing A at all are secret areas. If rollouts are allowed, you could save about half of the remaining jumps. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1j5OVfqqp97LhKHJja96h2SX5ZoFjaHiE7nvXgAYauMI

Most of the loading zones don’t exist until you’re supposed to get to them, the only exceptions are the pipes to Sirena and Pianta, the Petey fight from Bianco 2, and the Yoshi-Go-Round:

Emulator is banned for individual Shines (probably because legit ILs are harder to tell apart from TASes than full-game runs) so you probably want to leave them as console.

But I’m pretty sure practice codes (and maybe Nintendont) are banned too, even though the IL rules don’t state it. There’s a Google spreadsheet for ILs using practice codes: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12wDUXjLqmcUuWSEXWc1fHNJc24KlfyCh0pvibZYEQM0

Does this work through walls? All Items is pretty much dead if it does

Pays de la Loire, FranceNokiDoki6 years ago

You can speedrun 6/7, 5/7 or even 1/7 really, there just won’t be a leaderboard for it

Death% and Tutorial% would be trivial and very similar (also Baldi gets angrier every time you put “%” after a word to make it a category name)

I don’t think there’s a tutorial about it specifically but there are a few different any% tutorials that go over it, like this one: (go to 9:36 if the timestamp doesn’t work).

There isn’t a lot to it, if you’re not bonking anywhere you’ll just get better at it with practice. If you are hitting the wall or the awning at the beginning of the waterslide, you can try starting from a different floor board to avoid that.

Pays de la Loire, FranceNokiDoki6 years ago

Emulator runs are hidden by default, but there are 35 on the any% board if you turn off the filter at the top

I just got jump rope while going through a blue door, and it seems the door’s closing animation cancelled it

Pays de la Loire, FranceNokiDoki6 years ago

You mean Fast Any%? No, it checks what Shines you get, you couldn’t just do Pinna 3 again and be sent to Pinna 7 after it. Stage Loader doesn’t, so you could get Pinna 3 or even 100 coins instead of doing 3YG and it would still move on to Pinna 7

Actually, even though the counter doesn’t increase until a certain point in the Shine Get animation, the Shine counts as soon as the animation starts from the normal gameplay state (i.e. not while exiting area, dying, etc.). So it won’t work if you exit area before the animation starts, but if you use practice codes to exit area after the animation starts, the Shine counts.

The PAL version of Super Mario Sunshine has slower load times than NTSC-J, but it also has some extra glitches and the fastest language (Italian), so it’s optimal for any%, but NTSC-J is the way to go for longer categories. NTSC-U is practically the same as PAL in every way besides text so it’s slower, but then again the difference between all versions is like 15 s for any%.

In general, games released on 6th gen consoles (so GameCube/PS2/Xbox/Dreamcast) and onwards shouldn’t have as much PAL slowdown because they started to support PAL-60, which has the same 60 Hz framerate as NTSC.

Splits are never important, what matters is the video. Afaik, camera footage is okay as long as you can hear the game’s audio clearly, but I’m no mod

Pays de la Loire, FranceNokiDoki6 years ago

I think I’ve seen this done on JP at some point, but don’t quote me on that. They fixed another textbox glitch between NTSC-U and PAL, so I guess that would explain why the text skip doesn’t work on PAL. Edit: Disregard this, I got it to work on PAL, albeit with an any% completed file

I’m not sure if this is worth it, since Piantissimo only has 3 textboxes at the end of the race, and it doesn’t look like you can perform the skip while standing under the Shine or even facing towards it

Speedrunners try to go as fast as possible, so if sub 1 hour becomes possible, they’ll definitely go for it like people went for sub 3 in 120 Shines which was unthinkable for a while. They’ll “get in the spirit to get sub 1 hour” when/if some new trick is discovered that saves that much time, or when/if the WR progressively gets closer and closer to 1 h somehow, but the people who even got a 1:14 can be counted on the fingers of one hand and setting a deadline (heck, even a reward) isn’t going to magically improve times

Pays de la Loire, FranceNokiDoki6 years ago

I mean it’s hard to tell how much we don’t know about the game yet or when we’ll figure out something useful, but we can already get to almost every Shine and loading zone that’s available early. The last Shine we can’t get is the one above Petey’s head in Bianco 1/2, and it wouldn’t save more than a minute. Sub 1 hour could be a thing (and even then, with TAS-level execution) if we could somehow enter the Yoshi-Go-Round without Yoshi, but we can’t

Pays de la Loire, FranceNokiDoki6 years ago

There’s an any% TAS currently in the works and it’s expected to get a 1:07, so yeah it’s not happening unless a new major skip is found, especially not RTA

Are you sure you’re selecting the right game version? If you’re on the Japanese version, NTSC-J 1.0 and NTSC-J 1.1/A do refer to different versions of the game, here’s how to tell which one you have: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/83214196182880256/397352004646600705/JP_Diff.png

Otherwise you can try waiting about 30 seconds on Nintendont’s game selection screen before booting the disc, or connecting your Wii to the Internet before launching Nintendont.
