Big news regarding RPCS3! (emulator)

Metal Gear Solid 4 has now reached a point where it can be played from start to finish on the Master build (0.0.28 or later) of RPCS3. The emulation isn't perfect by any means, but this marks a big step for MGS4 running!

So the questions for the community are, how do you feel about emulator runs being on the board and would you prefer them separated from current runs?

I tested for the last 2 weeks and only have one crash point (the mgs1 sequence and switching back to mgs4). Probably needs some config testing from my side but all other chapters play quite well so far. No issues outside of that. That’s why I’m pro enabling emulation via rpcs3.

I personally would like to see it split from console ps3 runs. The emu already can run the game way better and result in better times than console. That’s for full game runs. For ILs (the chapters) i don’t think it‘ll matter too much since not many do chapter runs anyway.

I don't believe MGS as a community at current aims for accuracy as much as they do accessibility.

With that in mind, I think opening up the option of emulator for anyone to run and submit to on this board is fine. I suggest this comes with a list of recommended settings, however I see no reason to enforce settings beyond a certain reasonable point.

However as the emulator is not accurate, I do insist it be compared to only itself, and thus separated from console times into a separate sub category entirely.

I suggest maintaining SS/MS as the head category, and applying the PS3/EMU sub category to both primary categories.

These same changes would be reflected accordingly on the CE board.

I am not in favor of ILs being compared any more than full game being compared

We're coming up on a week with no objections for emulator, so we will be moving forward with it's creation. As of right now -

  • Full runs and ILs will be separated from PS3 runs
  • RPCS3 Master build 0.0.28 or later is required
  • Framelimit must be set to 60

RPCS3 emulation now has a board for running! This marks a big step in terms of accessibility for running MGS4, and while the emulation isn't perfect by any means, this now gives runners who don't have access to a PlayStation 3 an opportunity to compete.
