Hi players! The Category Extensions game for Super Smash Bros. Melee is now finished. A bunch of new categories for the full-game section are currently there and the individual level charts from the regular game are also there. The rulings for each part of this game have been updated to comply with the purpose of what we wanted for the category extension, and each category has at least some ruling for guidance right now. It can have rules altered/optimized and new categories added to it once more people play and think of new additions for leaderboards, but right now the game is at the point where it is considered ready for use. Please check the entry out and tell us if anything needs to be adjusted, added, or removed, for any part of the game. I hope each participant enjoys it!

I anticipate that this feature has been asked for or requested many times before, but I will give support for the tool to see the number of guides/resources a user has written and submitted, and entries that link to each one's individual page. All from a user's profile, listed out. There does not seem to be a fast way to see all contributions a user has provided to the website for these categories as of today.

After a small amount of thought, I think having another leaderboard variable filter for if a time incorporated pausing is a good idea. This topic is significant enough to make a variable for it valuable. It could track any pause during the stage (and this could include pausing to do the death restart glitch to save time in bosses, if people want this purpose for pausing be included in this definition). Such a variable can make it easy to know if a submission used pause abuse or pause strategies at a glance and people could of course filter those records out if they do not like records which utilize pausing. The Sega Mega Drive "classic" Sonic the Hedgehog games on speedrun.com have this variable already. (My idea here also applies to the PC version for this game)

I think this plan is good. Giving people a new website to locate their records is good as an extra option. I definitely support a variable filter for checkpoint usage/manipulation for obvious reasons. For boss battles, do you plan to include the TSC rules or any other rules on restart glitching strategies and gaining control of teammates early? This lowers many of the boss fight times but also makes the team boss battles wonky. For team battles at least, having those rules can prevent "potentially silly" 1-3 second times and encourage playing the team bosses in a less broken way. I will post more information here if anything else is thought of. (This post applies to the PC version of Sonic Heroes too).

Hey Nintendude. Based on what you wrote here and your suspicion that the problem might be the Windows 10 version, I would try downgrading your desktop operating system to the one your laptop possesses to form a more equal testing field. Your desktop computer has Windows 10 version 2004 and your laptop computer contains Windows 10 version 1809. There likely were big structural changes in some core system components in Windows from the older version on your laptop to the newest product being publicly distributed by Microsoft which may have rendered your video capture device buggy. You can research the changes with some world wide web work, but it could be a slog and hard to find exactly what is causing your video capture device to not function (finding a likely piece of information might be some work, too). If you do try to downgrade and if you can make your item work correctly on that same Windows 10 software version, you will at least have some basis to make further decisions off of.

With some brief searching, it appears that there are valid, safe sources online where you can get older Windows 10 versions from, but use care to know what you are finding and obtaining. If you choose to do this, you must create a Windows system restore point right away so that you can quickly roll back to your newest operating system version if the test doesn't go how you need it to play out. Of course, many other things could be the reason your hardware is buggy. Your desktop computer's hardware might have a component that is interfering with the video capture device's intended execution. The cause could be many things. Getting the correct answer to a problem like this is usually tedious as the hardware you have may not be documented well, and the changes to the operating systems over time that might concern you may not publicly be documented, or hard to locate. As a whole, a lot of software/hardware products are not documented as thoroughly as people might need, based on my prior situations doing similar troubleshooting. There are so many parts to software/hardware and so many different products out there, which makes documenting or even knowing about certain problems difficult.

Hello SukeSJ. The settings behavior you have explained here was incorrect and had to be changed. I corrected all of the difficulty and character variables options for this game. The character and difficulty options were removed for the All Events, All Target Tests, and All Trophies leaderboards as those two options do not apply to them. I then set the difficulty and character options appropriately for the other modes in the game (Classic, Adventure, and All-Star), so players can choose each entity as they used for their speedrun. This Category Extension is new and is in the process of being set up, which is why some errors like the ones you found were present.

The options mentioned here should be fully correct now, and these settings can be applied to the standard game as well because some of its settings are incorrect/non-optimal. If you find anything else that is wrong, let us know. I need to add all individual level leaderboards to this game and the rules for all of the categories need to be added too. We are working on that.

I don't have any resources like that or information about modifications or altered versions of Super Smash Bros. Melee. I don't have any experience with this sort of field, but I think slippy318 knows about such things and could help you. He is the leading moderator for this Category Extension and has an idea of what this game will be like.

Yes, Super Smash Bros. Melee modifications like making the C-Stick perform attacks in single player mode are popular with a bunch of players. There are numerous pieces of software out there that let players have this functionality. This modified feature, along with other modifications, gave this game enough changes and new possibilities that we wanted to create a separated game to have competition for such concepts. People who like these changes and/or don't like the original game's single player implementations can now put their speedruns in a dedicated area that doesn't intrude upon the normal game's style or history. If you want to discover more about these different alterations to Super Smash Bros. Melee, you can search the world wide web for details.

This Category Extension game is under construction because it has not been finished being created yet. Once the moderating team is finished making the game, we will announce it here and on the regular Super Smash Bros. Melee website forum so people know that they can start submitting. Nobody should submit any records yet. The rules have to be thought of and written down for all categories and some categories, like the individual level charts, have not been constructed yet.

I would like the new Category Extension game that was just added today for Super Smash Bros. Melee to be set and linked fully to Super Smash Bros. Melee and removed from the Super Smash Bros. series list. We made one to have leaderboards for a bunch of community-requested content and other ways/software types for playing, for Melee.

A little late, but 5 days ago LOZRunner was removed as a moderator for Super Smash Bros. Melee. He does not have the time to dedicate to this job now. I thank him for helping out when he did. We should be fine with the amount of moderators for this game right now, but once the Category Extension page is added, we will probably get a lot more submissions in. If so, we may need an extra moderator to take LOZRunner's place.

Hello! I wanted to write an update on the leaderboards discussed here for software modifications for Super Smash Bros. Melee. We wanted to make leaderboards for things like 20XX versions and all of that kind of stuff that give SSBM different features like C-stick for attacks in single player mode, among a lot of other changes. We chose to separate these new leaderboards from the original game to let any interested players compete amongst themselves without disturbing the regular game. slippy318 submitted a Category Extension request for this game last year, but it seems that the Category Extension request was rejected and may have been lost or done so by accident. speedrun.com had numerous technical issues last year and this request was submitted around those times so it was probably affected by them.

I spoke to a Content Moderator (Techstrobe) about it two days ago and slippy318 has resubmitted the request now. Hopefully it is reviewed and accepted! If it is, we will let all of you know about the rules, leaderboards, guidelines - everything the Category Extension is comprised of as soon as we can. Sorry for the lack of information about this topic over the past year!

After talking to some speedrun.com staff members and the SSBM moderator team, I have added four new rules to Melee in order to keep the integrity of the game at a high level. These rules are aimed at keeping this game clean and fair, now and into the future. Three of the rules apply to speedruns done on emulator and one is for the game as a whole. These rules should not hinder or discourage any new competition, and will provide more transparency from the speedrunners.

General: All game audio must be audible throughout the entire run.

Emulator-specific:

  • The entire program window of the emulator must be recorded when speedrunning.
  • The frame rate must be shown on-screen throughout the entire run.
  • The frame counter must be shown on-screen throughout the entire run.

Let us know if you have any questions, comments or feedback on these four rule additions as we welcome your input.

I like this research you did into Shadow the Hedgehog. From when I first began playing this game in 2005 it was clear the game wasn't 100% stable. Nice to see more of the game's inner workings being uncovered.

Fuzzyness has left the moderator team. He has been inactive for a while in regards to modding this game and after contacting him, he stated that he currently does not speedrun Melee and was fine with being removed.

Our goal is to have Super Smash Bros. Melee be completely unmodified in competitive structure (which we have been and will continue enforcing), but I also know a lot of other players have felt alienated because they want to use popular modifications that enhance their enjoyment of the game to compete. As such, I am talking to the other moderators about adding a separate game entry on speedrun.com for Super Smash Bros. Melee that allows Universal Controller Fix/20XX/C-Stick and other related stuff. I am not very experienced with this branch of external Melee software, but we will discuss this as a team and get back to you guys soon on what exactly we plan to do.

As it stands, slippy318 suggested we proceed by adding a Category Extension page for Melee that is set up properly to allow everything that you guys are interested in. Similar to what GoodleShoes mentioned above. One thing I am currently not in support of for the proposed Category Extension leaderboards, however, is allowing cheat devices like Action Replay codes. I feel like keeping everything "clean" in that sense is best. Let me know what you all are thinking and we'll make this happen in the best way for the community.

As far as we know right now, there is no way to manipulate the game to have the Triforce appear in the fastest room every time. Speedrunning this game requires heavy patience as a lot of luck/RNG factors are at play in many of the categories. You'll have to stick it out and keep trying legitimately in order to get runs done. As a personal reference, I've had 24? or so runs in a row on my Adventure Very Easy speedrun attempts end up with no Triforce in the best room. Unfortunately, we all have to grind it out. Good luck with your future attempts and sorry for the late reply.

Olive has decided to leave the moderator team, and as a result I have added a new moderator: nordanix. Welcome! In addition, more official rule clarifications are coming to Super Smash Bros. Melee very soon. I will post about it here once we finish updating the game.

Hey. I know the topic regarding whether or not to allow game modifications via 20XX or whatever else to Super Smash Bros. Melee has been brought up before, but we as a moderator team never made a final decision on it. I think most of us were leaning towards disallowing all types of game modifications. Nonetheless, I've brought this subject for discussion one more time so we can conclude this situation once and for all.

Whatever happens, we will update the rules for the game to specify what the verdict is so it will be quite clear for the players. If game modifications of any form are disallowed, we will also sort out any runs that need removing and the like. If you don't hear back from me or another moderator with a verdict within two weeks, remind us again.
