Basic Routes for Any%

Here are two routes for Any%

-This is the route used basically for WR attempts at the moment. This is difficult and requires proficiency with Pocket Chomps.

-This route is a little more manageable, but it plays about 45 more minutes of the game to get the Risk Badges. Most of the strats here are used in All Bosses up until Star Shrine as well. I would recommend starting with this one if you are just learning the game and don't want to take any% too seriously.

- This route goes up to Toad Town for the Risk Badge, and follows a very similar route to All Bosses. Do not be scared away by the badge's name, it actually makes the final bosses pretty safe with some practice (especially compared to the other Any% routes). You do use the Dire-POW Badge for some mid-game bosses, but you can save before these without having to refight an entire gauntlet like you would for the final bosses. This does lose about 40 minutes to the other routes, but does not require anything too crazy so it is recommended for beginners if you do not want to run All Bosses.

- This route goes up to Gritzy Caves for the Dire-POW Badge, then skips to Shroob Castle. This badge greatly increases your damage output for the final bosses, but requires you to stay at low HP. There are a couple things you can do to sacrifice about 1-3 minutes to make the final boss gauntlet a decent amount easier, but whatever the case you will need to master dodging their attacks and practice those Bros. Items! (Namely Pocket Chomps, Copy Flowers, and ideally Red Shells.)

- Current WR route, this one goes to Shroob Castle ASAP, meaning you would not go to Gritzy Desert at all. However, this comes at the cost of a ton of damage output, so the final boss fights are absurdly long. You should be extremely proficient at Red Shells and Copy Flowers (or a Pocket Chomp) to run this route effectively, and maintain focus on these moves for multiple minutes at a time. There are [safer variants](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1L_eezfYazTR8EIeal-8w8GdEB_GB32VkIV_CyitZA4s/edit?usp=sharing) that grind some extra level-ups to help out with damage output.

- **Note:** As of this update, [the current WR](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rnyecoaFFU) uses a different variant of this route that skips the basement in Shroob Castle and does RNG manipulation for Supreme Slacks. I do not yet have written notes for this, I plan to add some here eventually.

- **These notes have yet to be tested, use this at your own risk.**
- This route uses Koopaseum Skip to avoid fighting Shrooboid Brat. This trick only works on the US 1.0 version of the game (AFAIK if you have a US cartridge, it's likely 1.0). As a result, you would need to deal with the final bosses having quite a bit more HP. You are also likely to get "ghost rolls" on stat bonuses after you pick the same stat several times in a row. This means that you roll a 1 for a stat bonus even if you timed it correctly for a 2, so your POW (and thus damage output) will be a bit lower. This route might be comparable in speed to the Big-POW route above, hard to say for sure though.
- **Note:** The US version on Wii U Virtual Console is 1.1 AFAIK, so this trick (as well as other US 1.0 exclusives) will not work. Bosses still have the same stats on all US versions, so 1.1 gets the worst of both worlds.

- This route goes through the game in order, nothing too crazy required. Recommended for beginners.

- Current WR route, this one takes a detour to Shroob Castle after Sunnycide to get Red Shells, Copy Flowers, and Space Trousers early. This is only really worth it if you can take out Shrooboid Brat with just 1-2 Red Shells (ideally 1-cycle to use the other one on Bowser; you only have quick access to 2 Red Shells by this point, so make them count!). This route also opens up the option to skip the backtrack out of Thwomp Volcano for Dire-POW and instead take hits from Bowser & Baby Bowser (this is risky, most if not all of their attacks can inflict some kind of status). I think this route can save up to 2-2.5 minutes overall (somewhere in that ballpark).
- **Note:** The listed timesave assumes you skip the backtrack before Bowser & Baby Bowser AND do the Cobalt Star cutscene skip (after Commander Shroob). The former accounts for nearly a minute of the timesave. The latter saves about 40 additional seconds in this route because this cutscene skip can make the Shroob Castle gate opening cutscene not play, but (as far as I can tell) this will only happen if you've already been to Shroob Castle before and got Stuffwell's "Maybe we should turn back" cutscene.

Regional/Version/Console Differences

For anyone interested in learning the game, here is the ranking of versions at the moment.

Tier 1: Japanese. Japanese is conditionally the fastest version of the game; if at any point you need to soft-reset the game, the title screen takes about a second shorter to load. This matters for any deaths as well as for any soft resets on glitches.

Tier 2: Korean and European. These versions will equal Japanese if you never have to soft reset during the run. For speed purposes, any of these are fine. Run by preference/availability.

Tier 3: North American and Australian. This version is the notoriously inflated one, where enemies have considerably more health (up to 1800 between EPS Phase 2 on NA vs other versions), and things cost more. The former is the big point against it at the moment, there are a few version exclusive glitches but the run is considerably lengthier due to boss fights.

Worth noting, we run on DS/3DS hardware as the WiiU virtual console is harder to region-break, has worse buttons for mashing, and the timing for things is different, laggier and less consistent. Functionally, there is no advantage to 3DS over DS, though some runners find it easier to mash on 3DS hardware.
