How to Downpatch Sekiro [2024 Updated Guide]

BEFORE TRYING TO DOWNPATCH: Double-check which version of the game is best for the category you are running. You can find out more about version differences [here](https://www.speedrun.com/sekiro/guides/om9zs) (you can skip to the "For Speedrunning" section)

# How to Downpatch Sekiro on PC

The easiest way to downpatch Sekiro is to use the Steam console. Which we first have to enable. Pressing **Windows Key + R** will bring up this dialog box:

In the box you type the following: steam://nav/console , then press ok.

Then the CONSOLE option will appear in your Steam client.

In the Steam Console menu, you are able to type commands that let you download old versions of the games you own. The command we need is **download_depot** followed by the game's App ID, then the Depot ID and lastly the Manifest ID. This will download the "depot" with the combination of those IDs. In total we need 3 depots to get a working installation of Sekiro: A binary depot(.exe file), a content depot(game files) and a pack depot(publisher info file). Note that which Pack depot you need to install, will be different depending on where you live. You may have to try multiple ones, but that is not a problem since the pack file is very quick to download and you will receive a clear error in the console if you try to download the wrong one. In some instances, you can also just copy your pack file from your 1.06 installation instead of downloading a new one (do not do this for 1.02).

Each patch will have a section below with the 3 commands that need to be typed to get a working downpatch. Remember that you only need 1 Pack depot. Please be aware that it will not automatically replace your current game installation, the files will be put in a folder that we then have to move. That will be explained after this section.

# Installing the downloaded files

After you have downloaded your files, it will tell you within the Console where the files were placed. Navigate to there and find the folder named **depot_814380.** Now without closing that window, open your Steam library, right click on Sekiro and under manage, click "Browse local files". (Shown below)

This will open the folder where your current installation is located. If you go one folder back you will be in the steamapps/common folder. This is where your downpatched Sekiro needs to be placed. When you launch Sekiro from your steam library, it will look for the folder named "Sekiro" and launch the game within that folder.

Now, firstly, let's rename the current patch installation, so that you can save it for later use. I recommend renaming it to "Sekiro 1.06". Afterwards, take the **depot_814380** folder and rename it to Sekiro and put it into your steamapps/common folder. When you want to swap back to your current patch installation, you can just rename the folders so that the folder in use is called Sekiro and the folder not in use has a different name.

Note: It is also possible to add the downpatched Sekiro as a separate game in your Steam library with the "Add a Game" menu and choosing "Add a Non-Steam Game", which will let you more easily switch between versions, but it may break some features, like tracking playtime on your Steam profile.

# Save data Between Versions

An important thing to note is that savefiles will only work on the same patch as they were created on or newer ones. A savefile created on 1.06 will not be usable on 1.05. If you try to load a savefile that is incompatible with the game version, you will receive an onscreen message similar to this:

To resolve this issue, you will need to delete your save data (you can make a back-up by moving the files to a different folder, no worries). All of your save data, including control settings and save files are stored in a single file named **S0000.sl2**. This file is located in the appdata folder, which you can find by putting %appdata% in the windows search bar, as shown below.

You will be taken to the Roaming folder, where you need to go to the "Sekiro" folder and then open the only folder in there. It will have a bunch of numbers as its name. The numbers are different for everyone. Here you simply **delete (or move) S0000.sl2 and S0000.sl2.bak.**

How to Make LiveSplit Transparent (See-Through) in OBS

# How to Make Livesplit Transparent in OBS (Quick Guide)

[Open Broadcaster Software (OBS)](https://obsproject.com/) lets us add a filter that will remove whatever background color we have on LiveSplit. OBS is the recommended recording program, however a similar method can be used with other programs to achieve similar results.

Firstly, you should make your splits background a solid color, you should use a color that LiveSplit won't use to display stuff you want to keep seeing, because we will be cutting out everything of the selected color. Black is my choice, because it gives the best text clarity in the recording. **Note: Default layout settings work fine.**

By default, the coloring is set to be a gradient. For best results switch to solid color, although it will still work with the other options (highlighted in red). Each layout component (highlighted in yellow) will have its own color setting, make sure they're all the same. (**Again, default settings are fine**).

In OBS, you will want to have your Sekiro captured with a **Game Capture** source. This gives you the best recording results. Press the **+** in the **Sources** box and add a **Game Capture** source. Shown below:

**Game Capture** will only show the game, therefore we need to add a seperate **Source** for LiveSplit itself. For capturing LiveSplit we use a **Window Capture** **Source**. Add the **Window Capture** from the same list as above.

After naming it, the following window will appear. Put LiveSplit as the window.

I recommend setting the "**Window Match Priority**" to "**Match title, otherwise find window of same executable**". This ensures that that source will never try to capture anything except LiveSplit.

Now we'll add the filter that will remove the background of LiveSplit. Right click the **Window Capture** you created for LiveSplit (mine is called Splits) and press **Filters**.

Then add a **Color Key**. Set the type to **Custom Colour** and choose black (or whatever other background color you use). Then finally, adjust the **Similarity** slider until the background disappears.

If you set LiveSplit's background color to **Solid Color** then you only need similarity at 1. With LiveSplit's default layout settings you will need to set it higher to properly mask out all of the background.

That's it.

A final note: Make sure that the LiveSplit **Window Capture** is placed **above** the Sekiro **Game Capture** on the **Sources** list, or else LiveSplit will be behind Sekiro and be invisible in the recording.

How to Time Mortal Journey Gauntlet Speedruns

MJG runs aren't timed in the same way as normal runs that start from New Game because you perform the run on a savefile that already has playtime on it. This guide will cover how to properly time MJG runs for both PC and console.

# PC

On PC, we use the modified In-Game Timer plugin provided through livesplit. As usual, you would select the game "Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice" in the **Edit Splits** menu. Remember to press **Activate** to enable the plugin.

From there, we need to open **Settings** and tick "**Overwrite IGT with 0:00 when the timer starts (for NG+ saves/mortal journey)**" (shown below).

This options makes the timer start from 0 whenever it is started. When you are ready to do a run, **please manually start the timer after you get to the loading after selecting the Mortal Journey option in the gauntlets of strength idol menu.**

Please note that autosplits are currently not working smoothly for Mortal Journey runs. It will be fixed in the future.

# Console

On console, the runs are timed with the default In-Game Timer. The way we will track the in-game time on console is by checking the savefile's playtime before starting the run and then again after finishing the run.

This means that you must start the video recording from where you load your savefile to display the playtime before starting the run. You must also quit out to the main menu after the final loading screen of the gauntlet (or close the application during it) and then show the playtime on the savefile again.

To get the final time, we will subtract the starting time from the end time ( endTime - startTime = finalTime ). Please, do not be concerned about submitting the wrong final time. A verifier will correct it if it is wrong. It is no problem.

How to Use LiveSplit and the Integrated Game Timer

Running Sekiro on PC requires use of the **integrated game timer** in LiveSplit, which fixes the game's IGT (making it no longer fps dependent), displays IGT accurately in LiveSplit and autostarts the timer. This helpful tool is also very easy to install and get working.

**1)** Download the latest version of LiveSplit from their website **[here](http://livesplit.org/downloads/)**. This downloaded file will have to be extracted and the folder placed somewhere you'll remember it.

**2)** Open LiveSplit, right-click and select **Edit Splits**.

**3)** Find Sekiro in the **Game Name** field and **Activate** the integrated game time component.

**4)** You can add Segments here to your liking.

**5)** Right-click LiveSplit and select **Compare Against -> Game Time**

**6)** Right-click LiveSplit and select **Edit Layout**. You can add whatever you think is important here. Most people just have a **Timer** and **Splits**.

If you already have a layout set-up, make sure that your Timer is set to **Current Timing Method** or **Game Time** in your **Layout Settings**.

**6)** If you don't want to have to Alt-Tab to split, you need to activate **Global Hotkeys** in LiveSplit **Settings**.

**7)** If you want LiveSplit to show up over your game, you need to make sure **Always on Top** is checked in your **Layout Settings**. Edit: This might not work if Sekiro is in fullscreen.

**8)** If you have issues with the timer not automatically starting or not correctly showing the integrated game time **triple check you are comparing against Game Time**. Otherwise try restarting LiveSplit, running LiveSplit as Administrator or asking for further advice in the Discord.

How to Use the Cheat Engine Table

You may download Cheat Engine from their **[official website](https://www.cheatengine.org/)**. Be sure to use a table that works for your game version (see **[resources page](https://www.speedrun.com/sekiro/resources)**).

Sekiro Version differences

Before reading; there may be errors and missing data, I will try to update this post over time. Feel free to direct any corrections or criticism in a message to me on site or at holm_gg on Discord. I encourage you to seek help on the [Sekiro Speedrun Discord server](https://discord.gg/ZuXAVEx) if you have questions regarding speedrunning, you'll receive better help there than anywhere else.

# PC vs Console

Sekiro is officially available on the following 3 platforms: PC, Xbox and Playstation. On PC the game can only be played through Steam. On Xbox or Playstation you can either buy a virtual copy in the console's built-in store or you can buy a physical disc. If the game is installed or installing and has connection to the internet, it will either force you or ask you if you want to update to the latest version, which is 1.06 for all versions and platforms. The game version can be seen on the main menu. On PC, you can also see the version by right clicking on the sekiro.exe in its folder and checking under properties.

The earliest version for PC and for virtual copies of the game on xbox and playstation is 1.02. The earliest version for disc copies is 1.00, however this patch would automatically be overwritten by 1.02 if an internet connection is present on the console you are installing the game to. There'll be a dedicated section for the 1.00 version at the bottom of the post. In all other instances the console and PC versions are identical. Some behaviour may be different between console and PC due to FPS or other hardware related circumstances. An example of this is the opener of Blazing Bull, who will sometimes run in a seemingly random direction when playing on 30fps.

Note: there is no 1.01 patch.

# Patch Notes

### Preload Patch

- On some platforms, a preload version of the game could be downloaded a couple days before release so that the game could be played immediately on the day of release. The game files are identical to 1.02, except the Sekiro.exe is replaced by an empty placeholder file, preventing you from playing the game early.

### 1.02 - Day One Patch

- Game is released (Sekiro.exe updated).

### 1.03 - April 23 2019 (UTC)

- Right-sided Bull Skip patched (Left side version still works and is faster than right side anyways).
- Added a deathplane above the Folding Screen Monkeys arena, patching the Early Monkeys Glitch.
- Added more spawn conditions for the Great Serpent to appear at the Sunken Valley Cavern, patching an old version of Snake Skip that let you go from Senpou to the Serpent's Cave earlier than intended.
- True Monk phase 1 stealth deathblow semi-patched (now requires a [precise setup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeOkRtDiAX4)).
- O'rin stealth deathblow semi-patched (now requires a precise setup that involves aggroing her and then fully de-aggroing her first).
- You can no longer prevent Sword Saint Isshin from pulling out his Spear on phase 2.
- Tweaked the AI of the spear soldier near Chained Ogre to be less likely to spot you.
- Mortal Draw combat art vitality and posture damage increased.
- Dragon Flash combat art vitality and posture damage decreased.
- Spiral Cloud Passage combat art vitality and posture damage increased.
- Ashina Cross combat art vitality and posture damage increased.
- Floating Passage combat art vitality and posture damage increased.
- Senpou High Monk combat art posture damage decreased.
- Added a 20 frame lock-out period between certain inputs when menuing (does not affect up, down, left and right inputs).

### 1.04 - April 26 2019 (UTC)

- Nerfed Blazing Bull's Vitality and Posture.

### 1.05 - Game of the Year Update - October 28 2020 (UTC)

- Added Remnants and online mode.
- Added Reflections of Strength, Gauntlets of Strength and Inner bosses.
- Added outfit rewards for completing Gauntlets of Strength.
- Added new item and tutorial pop-ups that let the player know when they unlock features from the update.
- An enemy approaching you while you are sitting at an idol, will no longer stand you up from the idol.

### 1.06 - November 20 2020 (UTC)

- Tweaked the AI of Inner Genichiro's 3rd phase to fix an AI loop exploit.

# For Speedrunning

An important thing to note is that savefiles will only work on the same patch as they were created on or newer ones. For example, a savefile created on 1.06 won't work on 1.04, but a savefile created on 1.04 will work on 1.06. If you try to load a savefile that is incompatible with the game version, you will receive an onscreen message similar to this:

In this scenario, you will be locked out of playing the game until you either update the game or delete your save data ([check downpatching guide](https://www.speedrun.com/sekiro/guides/vjhms)). Reminder that you can just simply move your save data file to a different folder to save it.

### Glitchless and Unrestricted

All glitchless, restricted and unrestricted speedruns are currently ran on 1.04 or 1.06. You would not want to run any of these categories on 1.02 because 1.02 has extremely weak Mortal Draw. You would also not want to run any category that has to fight Bull on 1.03 or below because Blazing Bull has more health/posture.

1.04, 1.05 and 1.06 are very similar, there are only a few small differences between them.

1. On 1.04 and below, enemies approaching you while sitting at an Idol will stand you up from the idol. This saves time in some categories where you want to quickly pick up an idol for later use. However, it can also mess you up if you want to sit at an Idol and immediately use it.
2. On 1.05 and 1.06, there are additional options in the Idol menu. On 1.04, you can buffer an up input when entering an Idol to immediately be on the upgrade attack power option. This is saves a bit of time over the course of the run.
3. On 1.05 and 1.06, there are more pop-ups that need to be skipped before proceeding in certain areas, which loses a bit of time.
4. Some people believe that 1.06 has better responsiveness, especially when using keyboard and mouse, I haven't been able to get any numbers on that. But I can confirm that item menuing is the exact same between 1.04 and 1.06 when using keyboard, specifically. Take this point with a grain of salt.

Most routes play out the same on 1.04, 1.05 and 1.06, so it is generally considered to be personal preference which to use. However, some categories benefit from downpatching to 1.04 for the reasons stated above. The general advice that is given, is that you shouldn't worry too much about downpatching if you're a beginner because the differences are minor. But if you want to, you can.

### No Airswim

**No Airswim is exclusively ran on 1.02**, due to the Early Monkeys Glitch being patched on 1.03. In theory, you could run No Airswim on newer patches, but you won't be able to do the optimal route. This is a bigger issue for Shura No Airswim than Immortal Severance No Airswim, due to the fact that IS has to follow a more intended route, which involves killing Genichiro first, to not get locked out of the IS ending. The timesave from Early Monkeys is only around 40s-1min in IS, where as it saves over 4 minutes in Shura No Airswim (fastest 1.06 run is 27:11 by Ocarina, done on PS5).

IS No Airswim is *fine* on current patch, but Shura No Airswim basically has to be ran on 1.02. But in the end, you should do the speedrun however it most pleases you. Having fun is the most important.

# Patch 1.00

Patch 1.00 is infamous in many FromSoft games for being insanely broken. In Sekiro's 1.00, many fogwalls, trigger points and boss AIs do not function as they should. Patch 1.00 is not super well documented due to the fact that it is only available via a disc version of the game on console.

Here are some of the things that are different in version 1.00.

- When running through Shichimen Warrior's arena in the abandoned dungeon, it is possible to navigate past Shichimen without being spotted, which lets you skip him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pAHkt5Rrn0In every other game version, he will always spot you. There is an a way to do this skip on newer patches though, but it requires precise jumps.
- It is possible to sneak up behind and backstab Long-Arm Centipede Giraffe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HmPa3mhOsAThis works similarly to the Shichimen Warrior skip. In 1.00, some bosses are not programmed to automatically detect you when you enter their arena, rather it seems like they use normal line of sight to spot the player. This is very abusable so the developers added triggerboxes to the arenas to avoid this, but it seems that they didn't fully apply this fix to Corrupted Monk, which is why we can stealth deathblow her.
- The item menu looks different.
