do you happen to have a picture of the ingame file time?
[Spoilers for the most recent Nintendo Direct]
I understand the issue with getting your hands on the original hardware can be tough, I'm really hoping that the remasted version coming out next year will spark that growth that you're asking for.
I like the concept of making SPM more available. there are a few issues that we should work out though:
SPM doesn't have enough active users to pull this off. SM64 has thousands of runers making both leaderboards competitive. for SPM this would remove those who have a Wii from the competition, making it less desirable to run. because we all know people would only try for good world records on WiiU due to the faster loads.
another issue with emulators is it's difficult to find stable builds of Dolphin. This also becomes a game of who has the fastest CPU, there's a lot that would have to be worked out to get EMU allowed on leaderboards
I'm not saying that these are bad ideas, I really like the direction you're headed with this: making SPM more accessible to everyone which I agree I feel should be more accessible. It's just we have to resolve these issues before any of this could happen
also it's worth noting: you can still compete for World record on a normal Wii! I think runners get caught up in needing the fastest version of the game to even consider speedrunning which isn't the case for SPM at all! every version of the game uses the exact same route
the only thing you have to change for the databin is the file name its located in, for example: if you have English save files the R8PE file its located in needs to be renamed to R8PJ and they will work totally fine on the Japanesse version
good point in clarifying
I know this is super old but save files work across all versions of the game. so technically you could technically use either and they will both load on PAL
Igrmi found some new tech that lets us clip oob basically everywhere on October 1, 2020. because of it, scanner skip became possible. a lot of timesave came from it but the majority of the timesave in the past few years came from competition and practice. the runners have gotten really good at the game in the past 2 years!
the version speeds for a beginner go in this order: WiiU VC JP - (Fastest) requires homebrew or a jp wiiu WiiU VC US - easiest to get your hands on (second fastest version) WiiU VC PAL - same as English, can't do boomer skip
- WiiU VC has faster loads than disk Wii Disk JP Wii Disk Eng Wii Disk PAL
we can help you in the discord if you have any questions but as you said, I would just recommend playing with what you have because the route for beginners is the same across all platforms, its once you start competing for top times you will have to invest in the best versions
adding onto this, there are more resources. like alde's dolphin memory watch. these really help when finding new tricks / glitches! but yes discord is the place to be
I would like to be added to Choice Chamber, The only current leaderboard mod hasn't logged on in over a year, I've attempted to contact the leaderboard mod a month ago on all social platforms but they only receive messages if they follow you back, and I've gotten no response.
I also have found video proof for a lot of the runs that are currently on the board and feel they should be added.
Requests will be first on the SPM Discord Server: https://discord.gg/dbd733H as well as in this forum. final votes will take place in the discord.
The Super Paper Mario community would like a category extension board added. proof of interest: https://gyazo.com/1d8763cec7de0a50789fc6f0ad7285da SPM leaderboard: https://www.speedrun.com/spm Please and Thank you!
we had a community vote in the discord wether it should be pre or post game, everyone decided that the category would be more fun pregame with out dashell :)
for example runs would look like this:
The SPM timing has been approved.
New Rules
- Time begins when a new file has started.
- Time ends when "May we meet again in another time and place..." Fades to Black, Right before the Credits. (Japanese: “では また いつか どこかで...”)
- Proof is required for a leaderboard submission.
- Video Proof is required for any times faster than 4h 30m.
- Emulator runs are banned.
- All runs must be single-segment, using RTA, not IGT (no File Time).
We Watched all the videos and recorded their new times, for any PB’s Without a Video we will just retime to 3:35 Faster for JP and 3:31 Faster for Eng. Runners Please double check your times on the leaderboard. If it isn’t accurate send a screenshot to a mod and we will update it.
Times will be updated starting now.
Runners make sure you adjust your splits to the new timing.
Video proof is required if that's what you're asking. But you don't have to have a capture card to record video proof. you can get creative with it.
We currently have Individual Worlds (New Game)! If we have a good success rate we might consider a Post Game as well!
New Game Rules
- Entering a chapter must be the first time you've entered
- Once you enter a chapter you cannot exit the chapter
- Anything Post-Game (after beating the game) related is banned
- Dashell is banned
Chapter Rules
- Complete Chapter X as fast as you can
- Time starts when you press [Up] to enter the door for the first time and ends after after receiving the pure heart and "END OF CHAPTER" hits the screen
- No hacked save files are permitted
- Please provide some form of Proof (whether it be splits or video proof)
If you guys have any questions post below or in the discord and we will respond as soon as possible!
