It's the same strat, but less corner-cutting. The strat Joker showed is exactly the same as what Simply and Dwhatever do, just a little bit less optimized. Getting a slide time under 13 seconds is difficult. I've been learning SM64 for about a year, and my slide time is around 13.1 still.

Just from reading, it seems like your strat is way slower. I'm not sure when what we do now was made, but it has been a loooong time. This game is incredibly optimized with many talented people working to make this game perfect. I think if there was a faster strat for the slide, it would have been found by now.

Can you send a video of doing the strat? It's a little difficult to imagine.

If this were to exist (and that chance is slight), it would most definitely be a category extension. The probability of it becoming an SMS Hoverless-type situation in which it is a main category is slim to none.

Yes, but that's not the point. I'm with PASRC on the idea that it might be cool to have it be a cat extension.

That's probably a bad idea. The iQue version is a completely different game. If you look at the Japanese version, it still says Super Mario 64 at the beginning. In the iQue version, it is in Chinese. They are listed differently for reasons. If they were the same game but a different language, mods would never have created two different games on speedrun.com

I mean, ~35 seconds is a long time, but that's just an unavoidable thing. Think about it like SM64, it's incredibly optimized, but they don't need to change timing because it's been the same always.

The only reason people do continue+no save is because it saves lag frames. Simply has a very good video on lag frames and how important they are for saving time, and I'll link it here. Hope this helps.

Thanks man, I'll think about glitchless any%, but I'm gonna check out some stuff on the discord at some point. GSR without superslides seems fun, and there's always some time to save when I end up learning superslides.

I am a beginner (not to speedrunning, just to OOT), I've beaten the game, looking for a category that isn't incredibly glitch heavy. I've heard GSR isn't too bad.

Thanks, this helped a lot. Obviously, I'm interested in speedrunning so I'll go with a CRT. You, sir, are an enlightened human being.

so crt has less input delay?

I'm thinking of buying an N64 for runs instead of emulator, but I don't have a CRT TV. Is it worth investing in an old chunky retro TV, or just playing on an HDTV? I've heard retro consoles look better on CRT TV's, but I don't get why. Just curious on the specifics and nuances!

Right, sorry. Anyways, every category besides 70 Star uses the lblj, but it would make more sense to double jump from the door instead of walking to the other side of the staircase and long jumping into the spot. Forgive me, but I don't think that will save time even when done with TAS level play :/

Massachusetts, USAGorillax40544 years ago

@Swirc This is really hard to follow. Please, if you can, post a clip of you performing a trick. This way, we could see not only exactly what you're talking about, but TASers could figure out how to do it and see if it could save time. If this does save time, it probably wouldn't be used in runs as it's completely different from what runners do today, and it saves milliseconds if done well, as you said. It is always good to have new small time savers for a 0/1 star TAS, but from what I can tell from what you say, it doesn't seem like it would be a significant thing. Video please!

Well, in the video you did a double jump from the side. In your comment from earlier, you said you knew about the trick and were trying to show your cousin. From what you said, it seemed like you meant you could clip into that pillar with a long jump instead of a double jump. If this is the case, the most time it could save is very minor, as it is replacing a double jump with a long jump.
