Either version is ok - I know what video you're talking about. 1.2 doesn't support as high of resolutions as the Steam 1.3, and also you may have to toy with the graphics settings on different monitors to get the best experience. There is a program to run the 1.2 game in bigger resolutions but I've not used it in ages.

United StatesDark_Phantom3 years ago

I took a look at it and it seems like the sensitivity is locked. One of my qualms with the steam version is that some settings don't seem to work right and frankly I've gotten little to no help from their one dev on most of that. For the couple of things it fixed, it broke a lot of other stuff.

Many of us run on 1.2. This is for the SWBFspy downgrade, which is the same as the 1.2 disk version. http://info.swbfgamers.com/downloads.html You'll want the one that says "Steam Patch" and overwrite the appropriate files. If you need more help, you can check out our discord here: https://discord.gg/g9GvkyXAKz

Thanks!

No, it's a legit run. The SWBFspy exe runs 1.2 and the files included in the downgrade I showed you are the stock 1.2 files (shell.lvl and common.lvl). You can actually check the dates on those two files as well (12/2004 iirc) but the only difference between the steam version is the menu code. Except for the replacement of gamespy strings, it is the same as the release version of 1.2 and does not have any differences in difficulty or RNG.

We allow runs on 1.0/1.1/1.2/1.3 (steam version), however, 1.2 and 1.3(Steam) are definitely the most prevalent, other than console.

swbfthepusher drew this up, we're going to gather more data on the limitations of console, but for now this is the tentative ruleset.

I personally have a dedicated VPS (based in NY) that supports BF1 SWBFspy, an online solution that does require replacement of 1.2 exe (or a hosts file edit). I can setup servers when people intend to do runs and share the password, as long as I have some advance notice. It also supports dedicated PS2 servers with some workaround on the PS2, and we are investigating how best to integrate with Xlink Kai on Xbox.

FOR BB: Also, we want sides integration somehow to the IL maps.

@BostonBrew, maybe tack this on after hard in the IL runs?

Nice! This was on my bucketlist to do, glad you did it!

I like how you made the Category Extensions picture the Xbox photo :)

We talked about this a while ago, but here is the reinforcements bonus working. Run was done on PC 1.2, and I'm sure it works on 1.0/console as well, just maybe not consistently. Edit: The nubs are the Republic who wasted time with that bonus when I was clearly winning. I meant no insult to anyone but it comes off that way. Sorry!

United StatesDark_Phantom4 years ago

The Xbox One version has manually configured shorter loading times (it's easily moddable on PC).

I have seen garrison/reinforcements work, although with the spottiness of those bonuses it doesn't surprise me. I noticed even when I played as a kid that reinforcements didn't always work, but it definitely did at other points. There has to be a threshold hit (something like 40 reinforcements exactly) then it gives 50 more.

I don't want to blow up Tatooine because I like Jedi :)

United StatesDark_Phantom4 years ago

I guess the rules do read slightly ambiguous here. I understood it as when I hit accept on console and launch on PC. If that is wrong I can retime

United StatesDark_Phantom4 years ago

If you do it on the first map, the AI only has one choice (in the case of CIS, Harbor). There's RNG involved if you want it to be a different map than the starting planet.

United StatesDark_Phantom4 years ago

If anyone would be interested... There is a possibility, however slight, that this strat could become relevant. If you exit a battle in GC, you lose. However, this could be used to your advantage. I timed it and on PC it takes about a minute to execute a join and then quit and start a map that the AI selects. The reason this could be viable is that you still only have to win 8 maps. You would then get to use the home bonus a second time. Example: if i owned tatooine as my only planet, i could lose the first battle. Depending on my routing, I might want to play on dune sea rather than Kashyyyk Docks. If i can finish DS more than a minute faster, then the route is viable. I get to skip a whole planet and Docks then. This could be used twice (probably want at the start because RNG), but then you need to skip a whole planet. You still only have to win 8 maps but need to save over two minutes then. If there are particularly bad planets for a certain side, its something to consider.

Honestly this makes the most sense. Consoles can't do it and it is a big menu glitch. It is pretty cool though

United StatesDark_Phantom4 years ago

For you console players, Plains has an X-Wing/Jedi Starfighter on PS2/Xbox, and not on PC. Always forget that one. Lucky bums. Also, I just learned the bonus "Sabotage" does not work in version 1.2 on PC, but does on 1.0, and also seems to on console.

United StatesDark_Phantom4 years ago

I brought this up in my stream once, and I obviously know the limitations with it (and inconvenience - etc, it's not a truly viable solution) but at least those mechanics can be modded. Somewhere i have recorded the initial values of the Dark/Jet Trooper and can use some tools to figure out some specific differences, and the TUS/LAAT difference can be figured out. Time bombs can be changed to 10s, etc. You can even modify load times to match Xbox (assuming your PC is not the issue). An autosplitter would fix that but I've never tried making one.

However, in an attempt to not nullify previous runs and not be an inconvenience especially to new runners with the Steam/Origin version who haven't used mods, I don't think this is a good idea. I am also not in favor of a split of the leaderboards, although there should be a pinned forum post about it (like "HEY look here before posting about 'My version can't do three jet jumps'"). It's not the same, but I've seen other games (looking at you, Dragon Age: Origins) that say you need a certain disk version and patch on PC to do the Any% route because glitches don't work in other versions (and PS3/Xbox360 generally auto update unless disconnected). Nobody has done console runs of their game, which is a great benefit to us over them, but obviously leads to other questions that we have here.

One thing I can't change anyway is the AI difficulty on Hard. However, I'm still totally willing to run total categories even if I'm not running on the optimal version (looking at you, Xbox One load times and better CW stats). The only reason I've really gotten into ILs is because of Galactic Conquest% - so maybe my opinion shouldn't be taken in regards to those. But we could easily start nitpicking response times and smoothness on PS2 and Xbox One and argue that there's different RNG because the Xbox One is technically emulation, and I don't want that either.

I'm glad we're having a healthy discussion on this though :)

Shameless plug: SWBFgamers has a ton of modding data floating around. I'll just hit the relevant speedrunning questions though: Version 1.0 - Release (September 2004), still PS2 and Xbox current version (there were no balancing updates because 2004/2005, only Xbox DLC Jabba's Palace)

PC updates: Version 1.1 (and 1.11) - November 2004 --Improved AI Behavior

  • Ground vehicle hitpoints were lowered.
  • Droideka shield hitpoints were increased.
  • Jet Trooper jet pack recharge time was increased.
  • Jet Trooper EMP launcher reload time was increased.
  • Dark Trooper jet pack recharge time was decreased.
  • Dark Trooper Blast Cannon is more accurate.

All of this is in the official readmes. There's some stuff that isn't actually documented either. I actually think the behavior is not with the gunship but that the Techno Union has more health than in other versions. The Wookiee time bomb on PC for no reason is 5 seconds but console is 10 seconds. If there's any other questions, let me know if I can answer them. I can definitely just do a 1.0 stream someday since I keep both versions handy.

I copied and pasted (and slightly edited) this from my overall speedrun guides. I don't care what way the community goes, but the previous argument was "run it on the faster system", and if you're going to separate PC out, you should probably separate XBone in the overall categories because of those fast load times. It would be a ton of work for the mods here.

XBOX and PS2 run the same stats as PC version 1.0 with the exception of slightly longer PC/PS2 (compared to XBone) load times and no auto aim on PC. However, version 1.0 only came on the three disc set. Best of PC and Fan Favorites and Steam all came with version 1.2, which has some differences from 1.0.

CW 1.2 Vehicle hitpoints lowered EMP Launcher reload time increased, longer jet recharge time for REP Jet Trooper, more health for Droideka Shield GCW 1.2 Shotgun spread lowered for IMP Dark Trooper, Shorter jet recharge for IMP Dark Trooper, Wookiee time bomb shorter (not sure whether this is just 1.2 or PC overall)

PC was also deemed to be harder (especially on hard) than other systems because of AI accuracy.

There is a star wars speedrun one we could occupy with a BF channel that nobody uses. That might be better. The BF2 community is active there too.

there is a windowed mode for the game in all versions. In origin I'm not sure what it's called but on the disk and steam versions there's command line switch /win - I can't look at it until later though.

Edit: Yeah if the game is installed, go to your games library, click on the game, then the gear icon. There should be "General" "Cloud Saves" and "Advanced Launch Options". Under Launch options is the command line arguments.
