You should be able to use your mouse's left click while in the pause menu to exit level. It should be just like clicking on anything else on your computer. There is a weird method that uses a glitch with right clicking but that isn't too helpful with menuing if you learn where the buttons are on the screen.

You need to make sure you click save(meaning you need to die early enough for it to be clickable) to get the key.

Should be as long as you don’t take advantage, but to avoid it, after you get a run to bowser 3, have another file that you can go to that can exit level. By exiting level, you get rid of the glitch.

This is a known thing that happens because the stage you are in does not reset upon the "quit game" button. It is banned on the leaderboard since it requires set up from a previous file and is also in the discord's faq.
