Had this idea for a category in the back of my head for a long time and after finally discovering how gaining 99 "torture" on the end of level results screen works, and coming up with the absolute SICK category name I think it's finally time to make it a thing
Basically how getting torture works is killing all enemies in a level ANY way possible. Also you must kill at least 3 enemies at every enemy spawner. The rig energy does not count towards torture, so don't worry too much about grabbing it, however it seems that the red rig swings enemies back and forth faster so you can kill enemies a little faster with red rig, which could be useful
So far, the enemies that do not count for gaining torture are the little evil green men/the turrets that shoot them and the green helicopter enemy in Bombopolis. Basically anything that drops rig energy when killed counts towards torture, even the giant guys in Crystal Mine
Be careful not to de spawn enemies in Drench, some enemies thrown in water can disappear off screen and not count (I think?) and the flying enemies can just fly away and never come back
You are allowed to skip the results screen for torture as you gain a continue (or 2 lives in the Japanese version) for doing so which shows in the results screen (sad face no kids cheering for you)
You must be using the NoGUI version, that means a keybind for Quick Menu is required. These settings can be set in the Qt version of DuckStation. You must show settings of the core settings before OR after the run. Your settings must match this: Interface Menu (NoGUI Setting) • Pause On Menu: Disabled BIOS Settings • Fast Boot: Disabled Console Settings • 8MB RAM: Disabled • CPU Emulation - Execution Mode: Interpreter (Slowest) • No change in Clock Speed • CD-ROM Emulation to remain on defaults • Async Readahead: Disabled (Synchronous) • Read/Seek speedump set to None (Normal Speed) • Preload Image to RAM: Disabled • Apply Image Patches: Disabled Emulation Settings • Emulation Speed set to 100% • Runahead: Disabled Display Settings • Auto (Game Native) or 4:3 • Cropping overscan is allowed Enhancement Settings • Widescreen Hack: Disabled • Force NTSC Timings: Disabled (edited)
If all of this is too confusing for you, here is a link to a video I made that shows the settings required
Key dupe in Gulag, all warps in Craterscape, gate clip in Drench, fence clip in Beast Engine, and Crystal skip are all banned. You can still use checkpoint skips and swing boosts as they don't fall under "major" skips
Hey all, I was wondering if we could start allowing OPL for runs, it would make load times faster for ps2 which would be really nice and would make accessibility to the NTSC U version which is most optimal, more easily available to other countries. from what i can tell, the in game cutscene voicelines load barely faster than disc, basically the same as on Xbox HDD so u can skip the cutscene faster by like half a second and maybe some time save in menuing? would pretty much make ps2 and xbox loads even. TWoC allows opl i don't see why this can't :P
