When the game crashed the first time, it was while I was looking at OBS, but in the second instance (the one in the video) I was really focused on getting the final star, so I don't remember tabbing out at all. You could be on to something though!

Yep! For the Steam version, select the "PC" platform when you go to submit a run.

Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to Super Mario 64 Speedrunning, although I've been watching it for a few years at this point. Today I was recording runs with OBS and I noticed that Project 64 crashed almost as soon as I started recording. I restarted Project 64 and did a run, which would have been a PB... if the game hadn't crashed at the last minute. I could still move Mario, but the display completely froze. I've included a video below of the tragedy for all to see. Getting to the point though, is there a setting in Project 64 that I can change to prevent this from happening? My computer should be able to handle recording and playing at the same time, but I'm thinking that there's some setting in the emulator that prevents it from using a certain amount of CPU or something, leading to a crash when more things are going on on the computer, although that's just a theory based on no concrete evidence. I'd be curious to see what you all think, and any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

By looking at some of the most recent runs posted, it seems like there are only a few moderators who verify runs regularly. This game isn't insanely popular, but putting that aside, all of the few mods who verify runs may be busy with other things at the moment. I think it's important to remember that many people do this as a hobby, and not as a job of some sort. I can imagine that there are definitely days where the choice between verifying a sonic run and catching some extra sleep doesn't even cross their mind because they're already in bed lol. Anyway, I would be patient, if possible. All this time waiting could be used grinding for a new time!

While I can't see this becoming a category, simply because the idea is way too obscure for it to gain traction, I do think that it's a pretty entertaining concept, and I would be fascinated to see how low you can go with the time.

Hello TeaConnoissuer! Here's a good place to start: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiF75JoAs0OVk9NoulUiv62JVTJN4nNi5

If you want to speedrun sonic games, I recommend starting with sonic 2 honestly. There are fewer zips and tricks to learn, and the run is typically more forgiving. That being said, S3&K is a lot of fun, you just want to be careful about getting burnt out on the length of the run.

Howdy! I don't know too much about Sonic 1, but as for your last question, you die there sometimes because you are hitting the kill zone before it has time to scroll down. when you go through those tubs at the speed you get from doing the loop jumps, the kill zone starts at that divet after the two tubes, so if you don't jump early enough after the tubes, you'll hit the kill zone and die. The rest of your movement seemed to be really solid! If I had a piece of advice, I'd say that you should learn some basic strats first and just try to pb. From there, you can learn new tricks. Like, for example, don't sweat the loop jump and opt for simpler strats just to get more runs going. You'll get more runs later in the game and you'll have more fun playing. Best of luck with the speedrunning!

Thanks man. Hopefully, I can get some results with it and finally run this game again lol.

Woah, I didn't even know there was a new world record lol. That seems much faster than what I did. Tails also runs farther away in the version that I did, so that's good to know too. Thank you for bringing this up, it just goes to show you that there will always people smarter than you. Cheers!

Hey everybody, it's been a long, long time. I was practicing Metro 3 today and came upon this. To start, do a one-tap spindash and land somewhere close to the middle of the slope (if you do it where you see in the video it should work consistently). After that, get hit by the projectile. It's important that you don't input anything on the controller before and while you're getting hit. Once you regain control, do a one-tap again and kill the badnick. If your position was right on the slope and Tails was nice (which is helped by not touching the controller while getting hit), then Tails should spindash off to the left. Now you have to make a mad dash for the normal setup spot and position yourself as you would if you were doing the other setup. Tails will run back and trigger the platform to drop, at which point you should be pausing like crazy and be prepared to input right, the same as the old setup. I don't know how much faster it is, but it does eliminate some of the weirdness that can happen with Tails. Let me know if you like it or not, and if you have any questions I'd be happy to help the best I can.

To add on to @pashtette_'s response, many movements are objectively sloppy, but this is most likely due to you playing on mobile. For more precise movements, I recommend investing like $20 into a decent controller for PC and just running the game on emulator or steam if that is an option. You will definitely notice a dramatic increase in control. As for skipping straight ahead to a 0:19, I would first try to get a 0:20, which is explained by true gamer Timpz here: . Good luck with your grind wherever it takes you!

The biggest issue I see in your run is that you are activating the ground speed cap. Right after you launch out of the tube at the end of the level (around 27 seconds in your youtube video) you are most likely holding right. What this causes sonic to do is to revert back to his default running speed, and therefore lose all of the speed gained from the tube. So I recommend just keeping your hand off the dpad for a brief moment (or until the next jump you'll have to play with the timing) in order to finish the level more quickly. Hope this helps you and happy new year!

Personally I use a standard super nintendo usb controller. While this may not sound great, for my purposes, which is just speedrunning this game, it has worked fine, as long as you get one durable enough for constant play. I use the bottom three face buttons to spindash and it works out pretty well. The dpad is responsive and the controller fits in my hand nicely unlike the genesis controller. It's just my personal preference though.

Yeah they want that extra bit of verification. There was another thread where somebody asked this question and that was the response there as well.

I can't really see this becoming a category for reasons listed above, but if you're new to the game or speedrunning in general then I totally recommend running it. I'm sure it will teach you a lot about what to expect when speedrunning and it may give you a grasp of the mechanics of S3&K. Ben's already given you a great benchmark to try and beat. Even it doesn't become a category, you'll still get great satisfaction out of polishing this route and your own idea. I say go for it! :)

I don't know too much about this website, but the Sonic Center has a leaderboard for IL runs. They can be found here: http://www.soniccenter.org/rankings/sonic_2/times

Hello everyone! I wanted to take a break from easy for a quick minute and I was wondering if there is a normal guide available? I couldn't seem to find one so would my best bet be to just watch wr?
