[All Platforms] Getting Started Running Ty 2

**__INTRO__**
Welcome to Ty 2: Bush Rescue speedrunning! Ty 2 exists in 3 main forms:
	- **Old Console**, the original release of the game on Xbox/PS2/Gamecube. Xbox has the fastest load times by a significant margin, with Gamecube in 2nd and PS2 with the worst. So, it is highly recommended to do runs on Xbox. 
	- **PC**, which is the PC port on Steam of Ty 2. PC has the best load times and generally the best performance compared to the old/new console, and has the most activity in terms of runners. The route for some categories are notably different than console, which makes it very unique. See below for PC-specific rules for runs.
	- **New Console**, the newest version of the game ported onto Switch, PS4, and Xbox One. At the time of writing this, only the Switch version has been released, so nothing is known yet on which platform will have the best load times. It is expected that PS4 will be the fastest, but this post will be updated when it is known for sure.

**__TIMING RULES (old console, new console)__**
Timing for old console and new console is done RTA, meaning timing starts when you progress past the memory card screen, and timing ends on the final hit to Boss Cass at the end of the game, with the exception of Steve% which finishes timing when the final Steve dialogue is finished playing. You can look at any of the existing runs on the leaderboards for any specific category for an example of when timing starts/stops. All runs are examined by a moderator to ensure timing was done accurately, and adjustments to the submitted time will be made if necessary.

**__TIMING RULES (PC)__**
PC runs of Ty 2 follow the same general rules as the above paragraph, but it also requires the use of a loadless timer. This is a customized script that you can add to your livesplit layout such that the timer will automatically pause when the game is loading, and it will continue counting whenever not loading. This is optimal and *required* for all runs, as it ensures runners are on a more even playing field with loads discounted. You must also have a separate RTA timer displayed on your splits. See below for how to set up the timer for PC. The loadless timer is designed to only remove "black screen loads" from runs, but if you are found to abuse the timer in any other way, your submission will be rejected, and further punishments may follow if deemed severe enough.

**__SETTING UP LOADLESS TIMER (PC)__**
As mentioned, PC runs require the use of the loadless timer that can be found in the Resources tab for Ty 2. At the time of writing this, speedrun.com insists on making the download an .lss file (despite it being an .asl file), so you may need to change the extension of the file to .asl in order to use it. To add it to your livesplit layout, go to "Edit Layout" and add a "scriptable auto splitter", and select the downloaded .asl file. You then must make sure your primary timer is set to "Game Time" in the settings for it. To test it, start a new game file and start the timer, and it should pause while the game loads into the intro mission. Lastly, you must have a second timer that times using the "Real Time" option. This makes it so that both loadless and RTA time is shown on your splits.

[All Platforms] Routing (#1: Terminology + Concepts)

**__INTRO + TERMINOLOGY__**
Ty 2 is a unique speedgame in that there are nearly infinite ways you can route each specific section of the game. For the remainder of this post, I will be referring to the game as having 4 "chapters", each of which coincides with a boss battle. For example, chapter 1 contains the missions leading up to and including the Patchy fight, chapter 2 leads to the Oil Rig/Buster, chapter 3 leads to Fluffy, and chapter 4 leads to Boss Cass.

**__BASIC ROUTING__**
First, most casual players don't realize that a mission does not need to be "unlocked" via dialogue/callsheet, or visible on the map with a star, to be completable. In other words, all missions for a specific chapter will be available at the start of the chapter, with only a few exceptions, notably the second Sub Bunyip mission in chapter 3 and Truck Stop in chapter 4. This alone already expands on routing options, as we can determine a driving route and go from mission to mission through the map with minimal backtracking.

The next thing to know is that in each chapter of the game, there is a specific set of missions that are offered to you for completion, and you are always allowed to skip *1* of these missions. For example, chapter 1 contains 5 story missions (Tree Rescue, That's a Croc, Crouching Birrel Hidden Squeaver, Explosive Cargo, Metal Menace). As soon as you complete the 4th mission in chapter 1 (it does not matter which 4 you do in that list), the Patchy fight will unlock. This can clearly be taken advantage of in many ways depending on the category, to leave out the mission that costs the most amount of time to complete. In some categories, we might not necessarily want to skip a mission forever, but it can be useful to delay it until later to avoid backtracking.

**__ADVANCED ROUTING__**
By far, the most useful discovery we've come across with Ty 2 is that there are certain "optional" missions that exist in the game that can be used to substitute story missions. Throughout the game there are a variety of missions that exist on the map or in larger levels that are never referred to on the callsheet and are not intended to be related to the story. For some of these, they were accidentally made to work for story progress as if they were a main mission. On all platforms, the Bird mission in The Never Never is an example of this. On PC, the Stone Beetle of Rhinocarnook is another example. Completing either of these missions can allow us to skip *2* story missions instead of just 1, which is a huge advantage to us as routers. When we discovered the Stone Beetle worked for this in 2019, nearly 2 minutes were shaved off of the Any% (PC) route.

Opal routing is another aspect of the routes that comes into play with varying degrees of intensity depending on the category. In Any%, we take a bit longer than necessary in the first area of the intro level to ensure we have enough opals leaving to perform the rest of the route. Sometimes, losing time in one area is beneficial if it saves time overall. In 95%/100%, we take that to the extreme and also take time to get opals that are completely out of our way in Burramudgee Town because there is no better time in the run to do the mission that we require those opals for. Don't discount a route idea just because it seems slower from something like this, as the payoff can be unexpectedly large sometimes. If there's anything I've learned in routing this game, it's to **never** give up on an idea until it's tested.

[All Platforms] Routing (#2.1: Any% Overview)

**__INTRO__**
Refer to the "How Routing Works (#1: Terminology + Concepts)" guide before reading this, as it will assume you understand the content of it. This guide will do an overview of the route for some of the categories in the game, taking note of version differences and explaining the logic that goes into the routes. This is meant to be helpful and as a way to apply your understanding of the routing concepts in the aforementioned guide.

**__ANY%__**
**OVERVIEW**
Any% is one of the 2 categories that have slightly different routes depending on the version of the game you're playing on. Chapters 1, 2, and 4 have the same overall route across all platforms. Chapter 3 has a faster route on PC than on console versions due to the Stone Beetle mission substituting for a story mission.

**CHAPTER 1**
On all platforms, we need 5,000 opals after chapter 1, which makes the opal routing fairly tight if you want to avoid going out of your way for opals at some point. Metal Menace is the mission skipped in chapter 1, because of how long it takes to walk into and out of Outback Oasis relative to the other missions. 
The route goes *Intro -> Tree Rescue -> That's a Croc -> Ninjas 1 -> Explosive Cargo -> Patchy*.

**CHAPTER 2**
From this point onwards, opals are not a concern for the route, as all expenses are covered directly by the rewards we receive from completing missions. The mission skipped in chapter 2 for Any% is **Volcano Rescue**, again for how long it takes to get through the level compared to others. Chapter 2 is a frustrating chapter for routing, as it would seem that the route we currently take (Grub Grab -> drive back to the Forest) would be slow, but all other alternative routes are even slower.
The route goes *Grub Grab -> Canopy Capers -> Dennis Freeway -> Croc Stock Pile -> Ripper Nipper -> Oil Rig/Buster*.

**CHAPTER 3 (CONSOLE)**
As mentioned, chapter 3 has a very different route for console compared to PC. On console, we skip **Teeter Tottering Inferno** in Sulphur Rocks, because it is too slow to go into Sulphur Rocks purely for that 1 mission. 
The route goes *Sheep Dip -> Sub 1 -> Sub 2 -> Tourist Trap -> Crocodile Chaos -> Ninjas 2 -> Bush Fire -> Fluffy*. 

**CHAPTER 3 (PC)**
The PC route for chapter 3 is ~2 minutes faster, approximately. We discovered in 2019 that the Stone Beetle mission in Sulphur Rocks counts for story progress, which had major implications on the route. This made it faster to go into Sulphur Rocks and complete both **Teeter Tottering Inferno** as well as the **Stone Beetle** missions, which means we were able to remove *2* other missions from chapter 3 to skip. It was determined that **Bush Fire** and **Crocodile Chaos** were the best options to skip. Bush Fire is by far the slowest mission in chapter 3, and Crocodile Chaos is only faster than other missions when it goes perfectly, so removing Crocodile Chaos technically makes the route not as fast as it could be, but skipping it takes out an extremely inconsistent reset point from the route.
The route goes *Sheep Dip -> Sub 1 -> Sub 2 -> Tourist Trap -> Ninjas 2 -> Stone Beetle -> Teeter Tottering Inferno -> Fluffy*.

**CHAPTER 4**
The route for chapter 4 also takes advantage of an optional mission (the bird in The Never Never), but this works across all platforms the game exists on. Chapter 4 is notorious for having *3* very slow driving-delivery missions, and having the bird mission allows us to skip 2 of them (**Plutonium Panic** and **Need a Spare** are skipped).
The route goes *Big Bang -> The Never Never (4 missions) -> Ninjas 3 -> Truck Stop -> Truck Tragedy -> Fire Fight -> Boss Cass Bust Up*.

**__STEVE%__**
**OVERVIEW**
Steve% is objectively the best category, as we bow down to Steve's infinite wisdom and speak to him all 10 times as fast as possible. Don't question it, just drink the gooboo juice. Steve% has a unique route that's not seen in other categories due to the nature of prioritizing Steve above all else. It is also the only category for Ty 2 that doesn't end by finishing the story of the game. The route is basically an Any% variant where detours are taken when required to prioritize Steve. Similar to Any%, the route for Steve% is slightly different depending on if you're playing on console or PC, due to the Stone Beetle mission.

**CHAPTER 1**
As to be expected, opal routing is a non-factor in Steve% because of how many opals we get by the act of listening to all of Steve's dialogues. Reaching 5,000 after Patchy is still a thing, but is made much easier than in Any% due to the +1,000 from Steve in the sewers. The route for Chapter 1 is the exact same as Any%, minus talking to Steve in the sewers.
The route goes *Intro -> Tree Rescue -> That's a Croc -> Ninjas 1 -> Explosive Cargo -> Patchy*.

**CHAPTER 2**
Chapter 2 in Steve% marks the only time in any category that **Croc Stock Pile** is skipped in a route. It is a deceptively long mission, and we skip it in place of **Volcano Rescue** since Mount Boom has a Steve in it.
The route goes *Grub Grab -> Volcano Rescue -> Canopy Capers -> Steve at Training North of Freeway -> Dennis Freeway -> Ripper Nipper -> Oil Rig/Buster*.

**CHAPTER 3 (CONSOLE)**
Chapter 3 on console skips **Sheep Dip** instead of **Teeter Tottering Inferno** because there is a Steve in Sulphur Rocks, but **Bush Fire** is still required to be done because the **Stone Beetle** mission does not count for story progress on console.
The route goes *Sub 1 -> Sub 2 -> Tourist Trap -> Crocodile Chaos -> Ninjas 2 -> Teeter Tottering Inferno -> Bush Fire -> Fluffy*.

**CHAPTER 3 (PC)**
Chapter 3 on PC skips **Sheep Dip** and **Bush Fire**, because **Stone Beetle** counts for story progress on PC and is done while getting the Steve in that area.
The route goes *Sub 1 -> Sub 2 -> Tourist Trap -> Crocodile Chaos -> Ninjas 2 -> Teeter Tottering Inferno -> Stone Beetle -> Fluffy*.

**CHAPTER 4**
Chapter 4 is very quick and the most unique of all categories, due to the fact that we don't finish the run on defeating Boss Cass. The only thing left to do at this point is speaking to the final 3 Steve's in Outback Oasis, Sly's Shack, and The Never Never (in that order).
The route goes *Outback Oasis (Steve underwater) -> Sly's Shack (Steve outside) -> The Never Never (Steve underlava)*.

[All Platforms] Routing (#4: All Missions)

**__INTRO__**

This guide will do an overview of the route for some of the categories in the game, taking note of version differences and explaining the logic that goes into the routes. This is meant to be helpful and as a way to apply your understanding of the routing concepts in the aforementioned guide.

**__ALL MISSIONS__**
**OVERVIEW**
Because All Missions (as the name would suggest) completes all missions in the game, the route for this category is the same across all platforms. Technically, the category name is a lie as we only complete 43/44 missions, we do not do the second Spy mission. The second Spy mission is where you need to defeat the 25 disguised spies around the game, and it was determined early on in the game's life that this mission is more of a collectible than a proper mission, and the route was more interesting if it was left out of the requirements. Chapters 1 and 4 have some unique aspects to the route, but chapters 2 and 3 are fairly straightforward.

**CHAPTER 1**
Similar to Any%, the opal routing is a bit tight for chapter 1. The main problem that we ran into with routing chapter 1 is that, if at all possible, the **Haunted House** mission in Upper Burramudgee should be done at the same time as **Tree Rescue**, due to the time it takes to walk to that part of town. This is made difficult because the Infrarang (required for the Haunted House) costs 4,000 opals and it's impossible to reach 4,000 opals this early in the game without having to go out of our way, and it was determined that speaking to Gooboo Steve in the sewers was the best way to do this. Also, even though this is All Missions, it is still beneficial to skip missions at times, so **Metal Menace** is delayed until the end of the run (see the chapter 4 section below). This category also does the Training Program in the HQ area, while Any% skips it because it does not count for story progress.
The route goes *Intro -> Training Program -> That's a Croc (+ talking to steve) -> Spy 1 -> Tree Rescue -> Haunted House -> Ninjas 1 -> Explosive Cargo -> Patchy*.

**CHAPTER 2**
The route for chapter 2 is a lot more straightforward than chapter 1. The route closely resembles what is done in Any%, with 1 change; we skip **Grub Grab** in favor of doing it in chapter 3, and in its place we do **Volcano Rescue**, as the only requirement for it is the Thermo Bunyip, which is purchased after Patchy. This chapter also contains the first instance of an optional mission being completed: the training grounds mission just north of **Dennis Freeway**.
The route goes *Volcano Rescue -> Canopy Capers -> Training North of Freeway -> Dennis Freeway -> Croc Stock Pile -> Ripper Nipper -> Oil Rig/Buster*.

**CHAPTER 3**
Chapter 3 is also pretty straightforward, and is again pretty similar to what Any% does. The skipped mission for chapter 3 is **Sheep Dip**, which is done near the end of the run. Instead, chapter 3 begins with doing **Grub Grab** under the reasoning that we want to be doing something when driving towards the Beach for the Sub Bunyip missions. After Grub Grab the route continues north and completes the second training grounds area just north of the beach, and heads north + west to finish up all missions in that area.
The route goes *Grub Grab -> Sub 1 -> Sub 2 -> Training North of Beach -> Tourist Trap -> Crocodile Chaos -> Ninjas 2 -> Sulphur Rocks (Teeter Tottering Inferno, Stone Beetle, Temple) -> Bush Fire -> Fluffy*.

**CHAPTER 4**
Chapter 4 begins pretty similarly to the Any% route, but takes some variations near the middle and end to not skip any missions. After Ninjas 3, we take a break from action missions to do the 2 remaining driving missions, **Plutonium Panic** and **Need a Spare**. If you recall from above, **Sheep Dip** and **Metal Menace** were skipped but still have yet to be done. At the end of chapter 4, you are reasonably close to the location of those missions on the map, so they are done then. The reason for delaying Metal Menace is to be able to take advantage of pausing and selecting "exit level" from inside Outback Oasis, as this is much faster than walking out of the level. This is not fast in any situation except for at the very end of the route. Although it seems counter-intuitive, we drive past Outback Oasis and do Sheep Dip before backtracking to Outback Oasis at the end of the route.
The route goes *Big Bang -> The Never Never (4 missions) -> Ninjas 3 -> Plutonium Panic -> Need a Spare -> Truck Stop -> Truck Tragedy -> Fire Fight -> Sheep Dip -> Metal Menace -> Boss Cass Bust Up*.

[All Platforms] Routing (#5: 95%/100%)

**__INTRO__**
Refer to the "How Routing Works (#1: Terminology + Concepts)" guide before reading this, as it will assume you understand the content of it. This guide will do an overview of the route for some of the categories in the game, taking note of version differences and explaining the logic that goes into the routes. This is meant to be helpful and as a way to apply your understanding of the routing concepts in the aforementioned guide.

**__95/100%__**
**OVERVIEW**
95% and 100% are essentially the same category, with 95% cutting out the opal grinding section at the end of the run. Both categories have the same route up until that point, hence this guide will cover both and will refer to itself as just 100% for the rest of the guide. That being said, the route for 100% in itself is extremely similar to All Missions, which is natural considering All Missions visits every level/mission in the game already. The main differences are that 100% completes all 7 races and gets all collectibles around the map while doing the missions.

**CHAPTER 1**
The first thing to be aware of for 100% is that the opal route is **extremely** tight from the start of the run until just after chapter 1. Very often I find myself just barely having enough opals after Patchy, even with the route having us go out of our way for extra opals along the way. 9,000 opals are required after Patchy, and 4,000 are spent ASAP after the intro, similar to All Missions (talking to Steve in the sewers achieves this first goal). The route also has us getting a bunch of invisible boxes with the infrarang while heading towards the sewers to talk to Ken for Spy 2.
The route goes *Intro -> Training Program -> That's a Croc -> Tree Rescue -> Haunted House -> Spy 1 -> Start Spy 2 -> Ninjas 1 -> Race 1 -> Explosive Cargo -> Race 2 -> Patchy*.

**CHAPTER 2**
The route for chapter 2 is different from All Missions in that we do **Grub Grab** and delay **Volcano Rescue** until later. A driving force behind the 100% route is minimizing backtracking at all times, meaning only going into larger levels for their mission(s) when we have all rangs required to get all of the collectibles while there. Other than that, the route is straightforward, with the first instance of 100%'ing an area coming with Canopy Capers.
The route goes *Grub Grab -> Race 3 -> Canopy Capers (100%) -> Training North of Freeway -> Dennis Freeway -> Croc Stock Pile -> Ripper Nipper -> Oil Rig/Buster*.

**CHAPTER 3**
Chapter 3 is the longest chapter of this route, due to the sheer amount of large levels that are 100%'d in this area of the map. The opal route from chapter 2 -> 3 can be a bit tricky at times, but I personally never have consistent issues with it. You should have, at bare minimum, 23,250 opals after returning from the Buster fight. The first thing that is done is buying a variety of rangs and bunyips in Burramudgee Town, and then visiting Sly's Shack to get the Warperang, which is the final required rang for 100%'ing levels from this point onwards. Also, chapter 3 contains the only instance of re-visiting (backtracking) an area, although it is essentially forced by the game and not a result of routing. The Orb outside of Dennis Freeway is impossible to get at the time of doing Dennis Freeway in any good route for this game.
The route goes *Sly's Shack (Warperang) -> Sheep Dip -> Volcano Rescue (100% Mount Boom) -> Re-visit Dennis Freeway (for Orb) -> Sub 1+2 (100% beach, including race 4) -> Training North of Beach -> Tourist Trap (100% Faire Dinkum) -> Crocodile Chaos (100% Wetlands) -> Ninjas 2 -> Sulphur Rocks (100%) -> Bush Fire -> Fluffy*.

**CHAPTER 4**
Chapter 4 is virtually identical to the All Missions route, apart from needing to do races along the way. Also, Sheep Dip is already taken care of, so we don't need to drive past Outback Oasis and return to it after that.
The route goes *Big Bang (100% Bush Rescue HQ) -> Race 5 -> The Never Never (100%) -> Ninjas 3 -> Plutonium Panic -> Need a Spare -> Truck Stop -> Race 6 -> Truck Tragedy -> Race 7 -> Fire Fight -> Outback Oasis (100%) -> Boss Cass Bust Up*.

[PC Runs] Saving the Most Time From Loads

**__INTRO__**
This guide is for runners who play on the Steam PC port. Due to the nature of playing on PC, load times can vary quite a bit from person to person, depending on your computer's build. In general, it has been noted that the game is consistent with its loading per-person depending on the type of load. We generally refer to the game having **2 main types of loads.**

**__TYPES OF LOADS__**
- **"black screen loads"**, which are when the game has a black screen with the Ty logo visible while loading. These seem to have no limit to how fast they can be, and these screens are generally where the majority of variance in load times are between people.
- **"airlock loads"**, which are when Ty is in the "airlock" areas of the game, the spaces where there are 2 gates that trap Ty in a space while the game loads. The time spent in airlocks have a limit on how fast they can be due to the time of having to wait for the gate to physically open, but can definitely also vary quite a bit depending on the person.

**__BACKGROUND INFORMATION__**
It's important to note is that all PC runs require the use of a loadless timer, which cuts out all instances of *black screen loads* from runs, so you don't need to worry about those. Airlock loads, however, are still included in run timing, due to 2 reasons. On a technical front, we have been unable to find a method that allows the loadless timer to exclude these areas. On a practical front, it proved to be unnecessary in the first place, as with the suggested actions below have proven to make the vast majority of people have very very similar airlock load times.

**__HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LOADS__**
Both types of loads are benefitted greatly by taking 2 actions.

1) Making sure you have the game installed on an SSD (solid state drive). SSDs are increasingly common in computer builds, so in time this might not need to be explicitly said, but many people don't realize the speed increase your computer can get by having an SSD instead of a traditional HDD (hard disk drive). This option would require money to buy an SSD if you don't already have one, so if this is not feasible for you, check #2 as well.

2) Turning off v-sync in your graphics card's settings. Ty 2 does not have a vsync option accessible in-game directly, but generally speaking you never want vsync on for speedgames (unless it introduces performance issues or glitches). If unfamiliar, vsync artificially caps the game's framerate to match your monitor's refresh rate (how often your monitor displays images, aka hertz). For example, if your game is running at 150fps but your monitor can only display images at 144hz, then you effectively don't see 6 of those frames visually, because your monitor can't display images fast enough. This can be useful to prevent an issue called "tearing", but more often than not tearing does not occur and you end up with a net loss because you are preventing the game from running as fast as it can, unless your PC can't run the game that fast to begin with.

**NVIDIA Graphics Cards**
For NVIDIA cards, go to the "NVIDIA Control Panel" program, navigate to "manage 3D settings", and go to the "program settings" tab. Then, find and select Ty2.exe in the list of programs to customize (you may need to manually add it by browsing to the installation folder). Lastly, scroll down the list of settings until you see "Vertical sync" and ensure that the setting is set to "off". Your global setting might already be set to "off", but it never hurts to check.

**AMD Graphics Cards**
At the time of writing this guide, all active runners have NVIDIA cards, so this guide is being thankfully provided by Queensclone, a Ty 1 runner. As none of us have an AMD card to test this, your mileage may vary if this works or not, so feel free to reach out to us in the Discord server (invite link found on the Discord tab) with questions. The first step is to open the AMD Radeon software, and click on the cog in the top right corner to get to the settings. Choose the graphics tab, and find the "wait for vertical refresh" option at the bottom of the page, and set it to "Always Off". This will change the global setting to Off for all games, but you may wish to do this for specifically Ty 2 if preferred.
