How to Speedrun Titanic AOT

Notes on Dialogue and Cutscenes

All dialogue and cut scenes can be skipped using ESC. As soon as the player interacts with a character or selects a dialogue option, the player can ESC out of the dialogue.
There are only three places when this is troublesome.
1)	When returning to Vlad with the package he will not talk before the game offers dialogue options, meaning that if the player hits ESC, they will be kicked out of the conversation.
2)	This also occurs with Max when giving him the cigarettes.
3)	Rapidly skipping through the cutscenes and dialogue on top of the smokestack as the iceberg strikes the ship in the patched game can cause the game to crash.

There are cutscenes showing the Titanic at sea which pop-up randomly after some of the phases are completed. They don’t always appear; most commonly one comes on when agreeing to get Vlad’s package, and another when showing Penny the Rubaiyat.

The Gorse-Joneses are only accessible before the sinking through travel-triggered appearances. They are supposed to appear when the player leaves the lift but sometimes are triggered by quick-travel, usually when moving from G-Deck to A-Deck to get Vlad’s package. Skip this dialogue.

Notes on Movement

Movement achieved using wad keys instead of typical mouse point-and-clicking even though the game is still “on rails” like a typical first-person point-and-click like Myst. Also, the game cues up directional inputs, meaning that if commands are given at the right points, the game will fluidly move the player along the rails instead of pausing or stuttering. This also works on doors, meaning that holding forward while passing through a door will count as both going through the door and then as moving forward after the door. There are several places where this continual movement can lose time because the player cannot backup using “s” and therefore must manually turn around.
1)	When going through the boiler room door the player can overshoot Vlad.
2)	When entering the 2nd class passage outside Penny’s cabin, the player can overshoot the stairs.
3)	When leaving the C-deck corridor, the player can overshoot the grand staircase.

Notes on Using the Map

The map is one of the most important time savers in the game. You are able to click the red areas to quick-travel to various parts of the ship. Keyboard keys are used to easily switch between the decks. All the decks are mapped to their corresponding letter, A-deck is “A”, B-Deck is “B”, etc. The boat deck is “T”. Specific areas and times disable quick-travel. On G-Deck, the boiler rooms and cargo hold disable quick-travel and no quick-travel is available while the ship is sinking.

It is important to note that you cannot teleport using the map until you have picked up the watch and bag in your cabin.

Notes on Glitches

This game has minimal glitches, only one of which is useful for the run.

Patch Glitch
Due to a glitch in the patch used to make Titanic AOT work on modern computer hardware, the two doors to the boat deck from the grand staircase do not function properly. Instead, the player exits onto the A-deck promenade. This means that at two points the current route takes a longer path to avoid this glitch. The gymnasium door, however, functions properly.

Stairs Glitch
Going down a flight of stairs on the 2nd class stairwell, then turning and retreating half-way up the same flight, then turning again and going down causes the game to deposit the player at the bottom of the stairwell, on F-deck. This is useful for retrieving the necklace from Vlad during the sinking.

Notes on Timing

The run begins when “game” is selected and ends when “Yes, I’ll get on the boat” is selected when talking to the Gorse-Joneses.

Titanic: Adventure Out of Time, About the Game and the Versions

Titanic: Adventure Out of Time is a point-and-click adventure game released in 1996 by Cyberflix. It is an older game and therefore, without using a computer with period-appropriate hardware, the game must be run in a virtual drive using copies of the disks. The original disks can also work on modern PC using a patch. The game is available on Steam and GOG; both copies use the patch for the game to function.
The patched original (used by Steam and GOG) is fullscreen and difficult to record. It also contains a glitch which slows down the speedrun. However, the time gained by not using a VM is considerable enough to cancel out the glitch’s lost time.

Original, on original hardware

Titanic: Adventure Out of Time, Categories

Categories

This game has a long base run; all the endings are achieved in the late game as the ship is sinking. There are 5 in-game endings and 7 categories.

Any%
In-game, this is the Soviet ending. Using the base run, you must get the Rubaiyat and the painting, which are required in order to progress. In the late-game, the only action required is leave the ship via the Gorse-Joneses.

Worst%
The ending only requires the Rubaiyat. In the late-game, you must visit the lounge and give Zeitel the painting, then leave the ship via the GJs.

Nuke%
This ending requires the necklace and the Rubaiyat. In the late-game, you must give Zeitel the painting and trade Claris’s shawl for the necklace then leave the ship via the GJs.

Nazi%
This ending requires the Rubaiyat, the necklace, and the notebook. In the late-game, you must defuse the bomb in Zeitel’s room to leave with the note book, give Zeitel the painting, and trade Claris’s shawl for the necklace before leaving the ship via the GJs.

Best%
This ending requires all four objects: the Rubaiyat, the necklace, the notebook, and the painting. In the late-game, get the notebook from Zeitel’s room, get the shawl from Claris (do not talk to Zeitel), trade the shawl for the necklace, and leave the ship via the GJs.

100%
This run will produce the same ending as Best% but requires that all the savable characters are rescued in addition to all the objects. In the late-game, retrieve the notebook from Zeitel’s room, go to the smoking room and bet the Rubaiyat against the boat pass. Get the shawl from Claris. Trade the painting for the antidote, then trade the boat pass for the painting. Give Georgia the antidote. Trade the shawl for the necklace. Get the letter from the Hackers then trade the letter for the baby from the Conklings. Return the baby to Shailagh Hacker and then leave the ship via the GJs.

All Endings
This run is a consecutive run of any% worst, nuke, nazi, and 100% and is just a "for fun" run. It starts and at the same places as the normal runs, but with the endings and credits (skipped as much as possible) between them. After the first complete playthrough, the game does not require that the apartment is replayed. Also, the run must end with the perfect ending because the game closes at the end of the credits.

How the Game Works

This game is on two disks. Disk 2 contains the apartment and the sinking ship. Disk 1 contains the base game with the main Titanic model.
Titanic AOT is a game where much of the story and clues are transmitted through character dialogue, but little of it is required for the game to progress.
According to the game’s internal metrics (accessed by holding shift and clicking “Help” in the game menu), the game is broken up into 6 missions, each with up to five phases (as worked out by Terra Fimeira).

This run strictly follows the progression of the mission phases, while ignoring the subplots (which are counted independently of the missions/phases). The base run is missions 0-3. Because the subplots and the notebook mission were designed to be solved during mission 4 (which is time-based instead of goal-based), the speedrun has greater flexibility in how these objects and goals are achieved in the late-game. Also, due to Cyberflix’s aversion to adventure game moon logic and dead-ends, the game was designed to have multiple solutions to problems, meaning that even though the necklace subplot can be entirely skipped, Vlad will offer the necklace for the shawl at the end of the game (as well as the Rubaiyat and the notebook if the player fails to acquire them).
