I don't know how to strafe properly so I'm essentially holding down the forward key for as long as I can.

It's possible to skip the picking up the key out of the bucket cutscene instead of the printing press spring cutscene as shown in this run. (It's the slower of the two cutscenes so you should try and get the key cutscene)
