A Guide on Downpatching.

#Motivation

With each new major verion of Dead Cells published by Motion Twin and Evil Empire, there have been additions in the form of weapons, balance changes, quality of life updates, and bug fixes that can and have impacted all of the speedrun categories. Certain patches are faster than others under a given category ruleset, so being able to revert to these patches is a must for any serious speedrunner.

#Requirements

A Steam copy of Dead Cells.
- This is needed since the only platform that has the infrastructure to support downpatching is Steam. Console versions cannot downpatch at all, and although other PC platforms might be capable of downpatching, that is outside of the scope of this guide.
A save file for this version
- Again, the Resources section has a few 100% save files. If there is a particular patch that you need a save file for that you cannot find, you might have luck asking in the Discord.

#Method 1 (Legacy Update)

The first method we will discuss is the officially available downpatching method that was introduced in the 1.6 Legacy Update. It is also the easiest method.

1. Open the Dead Cells page in the Steam Launcher's Library, and click on the gear icon. Then, go to Properties.

2. In the Betas tab, select the version you wish to play from the "Select the beta you would like to opt into:" dropdown menu.

3. The game will download in the background. After it has finished downloading, you can start up the game as you would normally and do your speedruns.

4. If you want to revert back to the current patch, you can go back to the Betas tab in Properties and select "NONE - Opt out of all beta programs" and wait for the game to download.

Note that some patches are not accessible via this method, with some specific updates never being in this list and some eventually removed due to a cap on the number of "beta versions" allowed for the devs to allow public access to on Steam.


#Method 2 (Steam download_depot command)

The second method we will discuss is a bit more involved, but is needed for some patches that do not show up in the Betas tab in the Properties window.

1. Download and install this tool created by a member of the Hollow Knight speedrunning community: https://github.com/fifty-six/zig.SteamManifestPatcher/releases/
This will re-add the correct functionality for the download_depot command in the steam console.

2. Open the Steam Console by clicking on this link: steam://open/console
- You can also use the Windows run dialog [Win]+[R] and type in the above link.

3. In the console, you will enter the following command, depending on the version you wish to downpatch to:

4. Although it does not look like it, Steam will download the game in the background. When it has finished, it will state in the console where it was downloaded to. In general, on Windows, this will be in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_588650\depot_588651

5. Copy the contents of this folder to a separate location. You can either replace the files in Dead Cells's installation directory (found through clicking "Browse Local Files" in the Steam Properties) or to a location of your choosing. If you do the second option, you will need to create a file called "steam_appid.txt" into that new folder with the contents "588650" (without the quotes).

You can now run Dead Cells as normal and you will be on the previous patch. 

If you replaced the files in the default steam directory and wish to revert back to the current patch manually, go to Dead Cells's Properties, in the Local Files tab, and select "Verify Integrity of Game Files...". Steam will then download and replace the files that are different.

#Method 3 (External Tool)

An alternative option that does not require modifying the steam client is to use DepotDownloader, an open source project built on the open sourced SteamKit2.

1. Download DepotDownloader .zip release from https://github.com/SteamRE/DepotDownloader/releases and the Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime (.NET core) from https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet-core/current/runtime

2. Extract the DepotDownloader.#.#.#.zip into a folder. Note that some users have issues if this folder has spaces in its name. In this extracted folder, shift right click and select "Open PowerShell window here"

Replace "R30hedron" with your Steam username. It will ask for your Steam password, and if you have Steam Guard enabled, it will ask for a Steam Guard code from your email or Steam phone app.

If the command fails, make sure that you installed the .NET core runtime.

DepotDownloader will download the correct manifest to the depots/588651 folder.

4. Copy the contents of this folder to a separate location. You can either replace the files in Dead Cells's installation directory (found through clicking "Browse Local Files" in the Steam Properties) or to a location of your choosing. If you do the second option, you will need to create a file called "steam_appid.txt" into that new folder with the contents "588650" (without the quotes).

You can now run Dead Cells as normal and you will be on the previous patch.

 * **Which category should I run ?**
Any% runs may be easier to finish than Fresh File runs at the beginning.
Hardest difficulty is obviously hard if you can't finish game consistently in 4/5BC.
Imo Any% warpless < Any% warps < Fresh File < Hardest difficulty, in terms of difficulty. It seems to me also more instructive for a beginner.
If you suck at skips, Any% warps may be easier.
But in general, just run the category you seem to like the most ! :)
 
* **I’m too lazy to unlock the super speedrun build !**
Don’t worry, you have a full unlock save on speedrun.com/ressources ! If you’re also too lazy to go there, here it is : https://www.speedrun.com/saves/Dead_Cells_1.5_100_Unlocks_6iysg.zip

Then, if you have the game on Steam, you have to paste it on C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\yourID\588650\ folder and rename it user_0 (user_0 is the first save slot, user_1 the second and so on) for example, after deleting the previous user_0 file.   
(make sure to enable steam cloud in game for it to work)
  
* **Why my Livesplit timer doesn't work ?/I want a fancy autosplitter !**
Be sure to activate the autosplitter in the Edit Splits menu. Read [this guide](https://www.speedrun.com/deadcells/guide/wgl7t) if you still have issues.

* **How to skip Promenade/bosses ?**

 * **My timer (doesn't) stops in special rooms !**
In Any%, make sure the timing method of your timer is Game Time.
In Fresh File, it is real time.
To check that, edit layout > double left click on Timer.

 * **My timer starts well at the beginning, but doesn't split between levels !**
You may be playing the game with another language than English or French. To fix that, choose one of this language, or harass R30hedron#9520 on Discord to update the autosplitter with your language. :)

* **Which software should I use to record or stream my runs ? To edit them ?**
Most of us use [OBS](https://obsproject.com/), an open-source and free software.
I personally use [Avidemux](https://www.avidemux.org/) then to cut the relevant parts. If you stream your runs, you can use Twitch/Youtube editors, but it is longer.

It may be incomplete, so don't hesitate to ask me or others any question.

If you are reading this, you are probably interested about speedrunning Dead Cells. You are making the good choice ! Dead Cells is easy to run and no two runs are alike, especially in Fresh File (the best category).
However, keep in mind that times are quite RNG dependant, especially if you want to compete for world record. You can get very good times quite easily still.
This is a guide for new runners who want to run the Fresh File category on the current version of the game. It will not explain all the hints and tricks for it staying digestible, but I will link the relevant ressources when needed.

Important note : the current fastest version of this run requires a Hand of the King skip which has been patched on 1.7.2. So if you want to be competitive/run any update sub-category, you may want to [downpatch](https://www.speedrun.com/deadcells/guide/trwtk) your game to 1.7.1.

As a relevant prerequisite, you should check how to setup your Livesplit timer in the [FAQ](https://www.speedrun.com/deadcells/guide/pcyyq). You also have to disable cutscenes and lore rooms in the main menu options > gameplay tab of the game.

# Which stat should I use ?


TL;DR: **Brutality** if you are not afraid of dying (and are able hitless Concierge with melee weapons). **Survival** otherwise (but means more resets).

**Brutality : strong, consistent but skill-based**
6 weapons on 9 available on a fresh file scale with Brutality, and among the 3 left, 2 are useless. Brutality offers the top tier items pool, but means you have to fight bosses with melee, which may be difficult at the beginning especially as we want to flawless Concierge.

**Survival : RNG-heavy but very safe option**
2 weapons on 9 scales with survival, in particular the multiple-nocks bow. Coupled with wolf traps, it allows you to flawless Concierge quite easily so you can get the hitless legendary for the rest of the run.
The HP boost helps a lot to survive. The survival scaling for wolf traps is anecdotic but still.
However, it means you have only one choice of weapons in the timed doors, which makes this strategy quite a reset hell.

**Tactics : why ?**
5 weapons on 9 scales with tactics, but among them 2 are useless.
Tactics lacks almost all top tier weapons, has less HP, the tactics scaling for traps is anecdotic. I may be proven wrong in the future but I do not recommend.

In this guide, I am going to assume you run brutality, but most of the advices will also works with another stat.

# Commandments


## You need a lot of damage

You literally start with a rusty sword that hardly tickles bosses which sucks, especially on a speedrun. Your main concern during a run is to get good gear to beat bosses as fast as possible :

* **Always take the scrolls of your main color**
The damage you get from them totally worth potential detours.

* **Take timed doors**
The weapons inside them are +quality instead of … none quality, which is twice better.

* **Know the fresh file tier list like the back of your hand**
Take the items from up to down, then from left to right.

Some precisions :
	* If you do not have a wolf trap, the orange items are probably better than nutcracker. But you might get a wolf trap later…
	* The tier list is relevant if all weapons are of the same quality. +quality weapons are usually better than 0 quality weapons, no matter its ranking in the tier list !
Same reasoning with legendary weapons.
	* After a certain point of progressing, not getting wolf trap and/or sinew slicer will probably mean resetting your run.

* **Do not underestimate the minor forge**
After stilt village, you unlock the minor forge. You should, by order of priority :
If you have sinew slicer :
		If you have wolf trap, reroll it to get +60% on bleeding targets
		Reroll your main weapon to get +60% on bleeding targets
Otherwise, upgrade your weapon to ++ quality/try to get x2 damage on your wolf trap
Use your common sense to get/keep good affixes (+50% damage at full HP, +20% on crits, +100% on poisoned targets if you have a poison source etc…)
	In particular, if you have a legendary sinew slicer, try to get bleeding causes poisoning (higher chances of getting it because more affixes)

* **If you are good enough, take cursed chests**
One extra scroll, and a potential good ++ quality item that scales with your main stat.

* **Legendary weapons are run changers and may grant you an easy personal best**
So go for hitless Concierge and check [altars](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/513701275305639947/680359874416082981/altar.png) (you can open your map to see which weapon it is, to avoid losing time for getting an useless shield). 
If an enemy has a star upon it, it means it might hold one.
According to [1.1 patch notes](https://dead-cells.com/patchnotes/11), you should get one in “most of your runs”.

We have several hints which allows us to hardly know where is the exit in Prisoner Quarters, Ramparts, Clock Tower and Castle. Even if RNG is still involved, knowing them **save several minutes**.

# Typical run

## Prisoner quarters
Take the two scrolls, **talk to the shopkeeper until he gives you the vorpan**, find the exit and leave. 
Enter into the time door, **take the 20 cells**, your weapon and the **assault shield blueprint**.
Go to the collector, unlock your health flask.
Go to Guillian, choose **YOLO** as mutation and leave.

## Promenade of the Condemned
Go to the right until the elite fight. Kill the elite, loot the rune, go to the exit asap and leave.
Enter into the time door, take the **20 cells**, take your weapon.
Go to the collector and **unlock assault shield**.
Go to Guillian, take **Instinct of the Master of Arms** and leave. If you are on 1.7.1, take **Dead Inside** instead.


## Ramparts
Kill the elite and make sure to NOT pick up the rune.
Run until you hit the hint, and then go down and leave.
Go to Guillian, take **Combo** or **Vengeance** and leave. If you are on 1.7.1, take **Combo**.

## Black Bridge
Killing the Concierge flawless is quite important (but failing is not run killer)
Try to get him stuck on your wolf traps. Stay behind him while hitting.
Hit him with the assault shield at the right moment to prevent him doing his red aura.
Slash, slash, roll and kill him. Loot the cells and leave.
Enter into the time door, take 20 cells, take your weapon/amulet.
Enter the hitless door, take 20 cells, take the legendary and leave.

## Stilt Village
Grab the keys and leave. Nothing really special here, EXCEPT if you have an extra jump amulet then you can attempt the door skip.
Minor forge appears in collector room. Reroll your weapons and leave.

## Clock Tower
Use the hints to navigate into, grab the key and the cells if you find them and leave.
Unlock the second health potion if you need to.

## Clock Room
Hopefully, you have wolf traps. :) Try to get her into, stay behind her so she will sometimes run into them when she teleports. 
Slash, slash, parry her shurikens, kill her and leave.

If you are on 1.7.1, take the **Lightspeed blueprint** and unlock it at collector if you have enough cells.


## Castle
Use the hints to navigate into. Kill two elites, grab two keys, and leave. 
If you are on 1.7.1, unlock your **Lightspeed** if you did not have done it before.

## Throne room
Here it is, the last fellow.
I suggest you [this guide](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1338096063) if you are not familiar with his attacks. Extra speed strats :
* When he summons elite vagues, do not kill normal mobs, they will die by fall damage or under HotK weight. Push the elite on the platform with your assault shield to kill it by fall damage. If you time well your push, it will also kill the elite on the ground.
* Reflect his bombs with an [assault boost](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rnk8Q85ZHsU&list=PLmGEcM3Gc6di9p64GaXyUE5UYNag0_QzX). Much easier than avoiding them.
Kill HotK. Pick up the symmetrical lance, break the King shield and kill him.
Watch the cutscene, enter into the fountain in homunculus form.
Profits !

If you are on 1.7.1, instead, skip the boss with an [hyperspeed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5mAoskPam4).

# Conclusion and improvements
You have finished your first run ? Congrats ! It is the beginning of a long story. Your goal now is to get familiar to the general layouts of game levels to move faster in them, and it will come little by little.

How to set up multiple versions of Dead Cells on Steam

*This is a little step-by-step guide on how to set up multiple versions of Dead Cells on Steam so you can easily switch between them without having to manually change versions (and download updates/downpatches) every time you move between versions!*

**Setting up the versions:**

1. Download the correct version you want from a reliable source (e.g., www.speedrun.com).
2. Paste it somewhere (into a separate folder) and preferably rename it so you know which version it's for (e.g., "Dead Cells [v2.4]").
3. Create a new file in the copy & pasted Dead Cells folder and call it "steam_appid.txt". Open it, type in "588650" (this is the Dead Cells Steam Game ID number) and save.

*Because of the "steam_appid.txt" file your total playtime on Steam will go up so you don't have to worry about that.*

If you want to make a copy of your current Dead Cells version (not the most recent version but the version you are on) yourself, then replace the step 1.1) with these:

1. Go to your Steam Library -> right-click Dead Cells -> Properties -> Local Files -> Browse.
2. Copy the "Dead Cells" folder you are in.
3. Continue with the instructions below.

**You can make the other versions appear in your Steam Library:**

1. Left-click on "Games" at the top left on Steam and click on "Add Non-Steam Game to My Library..."
2. Click "BROWSE...", select the "deadcells.exe" file from the correct version folder and click on "ADD SELECTED PROGRAMS".
3. Rename the game from "deadcells" to something that lets you know which version it is (e.g., "Dead Cells [v2.4]").

**You can disable the cloud save between multiple versions if you feel like it might mess something up:**

1. Open Dead Cells (preferably the main version, though I doubt the version matters).
2. Go to "Options", then "Gameplay".
3. Scroll down until you find "Steam options" with the setting "Activate Steam Cloud synchronization." and turn that off.

Routing Hints

This guide will present all hints we know to guess where is the exit in Prisonner Quarters, Ramparts, Clock Tower and Castle.

Setting up the 100% save file

Although it is not mandatory for speedrunning Dead Cells, it can be beneficial to have a save file that another member of the community has created to make it easier to get started.

1. First, download a 100% save from the Resources section here on speedrun.com. If you are running on 1.5, 1.6, or 1.7, you will want to grab the 1.5 100% save file.

2. Next, extract the .zip. The save file will be called user_6.dat.

3. Next, decide what save file slot you wish to use for the 100% save. You will need to have a save file in that slot. I recommend copying a save file you already have into the slot you wish to replace.

4. Exit Dead Cells and open the save file folder. If you are on the Steam version, by default this will be in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\USER_ID\588650\remote
Where USER_ID is your steam id. To find this id, you can go to the Steam Console via steam://open/console and run the user_info command.

You will want the number on the line:
SteamID: [U:1:*85383681*] (76561198045649409) 
So, for me, I would go to the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\85383681\588650\remote

5. Now, rename the 100% save file to the same name as the save file you wish to replace. Note that if you are replacing slot 1, the file name is user_0.dat; if you are replacing slot 2, the file name is user_1.dat; and so on. Then, move this renamed 100% save file into the game's save folder, replacing the file when asked.

Your save file is now setup for speedrunning any% or the Hardest Difficulty categories.

Setting up the Autosplitter

If you are using Livesplit on Windows, Dead Cells has an autosplitter available to assist with letting Livesplit handle the splits for you. This guide will help set up the autosplitter.

To enable the autosplitter, go into "Edit Splits", then enter Dead Cells into the Game Name dialog box, you can then select "Activate" to enable the autosplitter.

For all categories, splits will occur (by default) on entering each new biome, on entering the fountain, or by killing the secret final boss. Note that if you are familiar with the older autosplitter versions, this means that you can remove any extra splits at the end of your run. For example, for Fresh File runs, you no longer need the Fountain split.
