From what I can tell there are two roms for the game, with one seeming unfinished.
The 'correct' version to play features an intro screen from Gaia, the fifth member of the Captain Planet team (Ma-Ti) in the middle of the level select screen, and a number next to the power/health meters. Here are some pictures for clarity:

I imagine that the unfinished one may be slightly faster to play due to missing text scenes, but right now please use the 'complete' version for your runs. If someone wants to run the unfinished version I can make a category for that also (if I don't try it beforehand!).
I spent some time (accidentally) running on the normal difficulty. While I didn't notice anything majorly different, I did notice that in the Oil Rig level on the after taking the first lift, that the UFO comes from the right on Normal, and left on Hard - therein changing the strategy for that par
