thanks

I want to hide these stats: https://i.imgur.com/tgJDOlz.png Otherwise it's not truly anonymous.

I've been boosting anonymously, but it's not totally anonymous if the number of games and users boosted is listed on my profile. I would like to hide it.

The community has voted in favour of banning save states and the game rules have been updated. Please familiarise yourselves with them!

#Introduction: Thanks everyone for participating in the discussions over this last week! Pretty much all of the discussion has taken place on the Discord server, with my coming here to post my longform rambles. This post regards a vote on allowing/disallowing save states for emulator runners to skip the game's 3-minute intro.

Save states are an emulator-only feature which has historically been allowed to be used by emulator runners to skip past the intro of the game, allowing them to retry attempts much quicker. It's something that was "accidentally" allowed as runs were verified with save states being used without their prevention being enforced.

#Against using save states:

  • It's making use of a feature not available to console runners to gain an advantage, even if the advantage is not considered to be a part of the run. This could be considered by many as the textbook definition of a "cheat".

  • It makes running the game easier, which incentivizes people to perform their runs on emulator instead of console.

  • Because PS2 emulation is laughably inaccurate, it has been allowed as a compromise. Many PS2 games do not allow emulators whatsoever, but because the barrier of entry is especially quite high for players outside of the Americas and Asia on console for this game, we have historically allowed emulator in order to maintain an active playerbase. Console should be promoted as the preferred way to run, and emulator runners should not be using their position to gain an advantage.

  • Also related to making running the game easier, emulator runners through having a shorter "reset time" can hold their runs to a higher standard than console runners without feeling as much of an effect. Emulator runners can reset to a crappy Weevil fight, for example, without too much trouble.

  • It opens up potential for RNG manipulations that would be much easier to pull off on emulator than on console. This is something which not a lot of research has gone into, but if there were to be a seed that you could hit that, given good execution from the start of the run onwards, gave you Dimensionhole in your first hand for every fight that exists only after having the console powered on for 10 hours, emulator runners could theoretically be able to pull this run off without having to wait for any time at all.

  • I cannot think of a single other game that allows the usage of emulator-exclusive features to gain an advantage inside or outside of the run.

After reading these points you've probably come to the conclusion that I am incredibly biased and that I should have left the writing of this message to someone else. You're right, and I want to be transparent about that.

#In favour of keeping save states:

  • It makes the game much more accessible. There's no doubt in my mind that a lot of runners come to try out the game, realise that they have to skip through a 5 minute intro on every single attempt, and quickly give up.

  • It will be more difficult in the future for emulator runners to beat their own times, which could lead to them having a hard time comparing against themselves when they are forced to hold themselves to a lower standard for runs than before.

There are some games that have worse intros, and different communities have different ways of dealing with them. We've discussed over the last week a compromise - starting from continue - which was voted against. So I'm putting this to you all now as the final point of contention in our newly drafted ruleset.

The vote will take place in the Discord, so make sure you're there. You can make your voice heard here if you wish, though, and I'll consider it when counting the votes if you are explicit about your wishes and you don't want to join the Discord.

What does this have to do with speedrunning?

Loading a save state at the side select screen to skip that dialogue is currently allowed

Oops I typo'd - only one is a slot rare (my previous post counted 6 total, lol), that is the Right Leg. It has a random chance of showing up as a generic slot rare. It's not a special slot rare like Dark Magician Girl which is always obtained when you line up 3 Dark Magicians. It has an equal chance of showing up as cards like Summoned Skull, Temple of Skulls, etc.

None of the pieces show up in the slots normally, so none of them can be won from Grandpa.

Here is a spreadsheet which lists all of the ways of obtaining each card in the game, created by GMS: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zpBNCHcCoU_lidOsSlgQeEnOvB76oJkYLt5nPlhQBYk/edit#gid=0

Personally I wouldn't run this category in a million years but I can give you a rough outline.

Two pieces of Exodia are obtained via passwords, two pieces are obtained via reincarnation (15dc), and two are random slot rares. You would probably just start white rose and line up as many 3-in-a-rows as you can of cards that are as close to 15dc as you can get.

You'd probably be fighting Tristan or Tea over and over again - I suppose you have to do at least 10 duels for the two reincarnations anyway, so win until you get the two pieces and surrender once you have them (if you're lucky and get the two pieces within 10 duels. Sounds unlikely).

Timing would end after dismissing the YOU WIN textbox following an Exodia summon.

For the record, reincarnation manip exists and has been utilised in his All Cards run which you can find here:

All Cards is a good example of a legitimate category that isn't on the leaderboards because it's not very competitive.. And I would say that it is more competitive than "Summon Exodia" would be :P

Categories do not get added until someone completes a run.

In this case, it's a bit of a stretch. It's not really a completion goal, and it might even be longer than any% (no passwords). It would definitely be misc. and may need not only a complete run but a demonstration that it is actually competitive (up to us).

Don't let the lack of a category stop you from running, though. That's how categories are made.

I'm actually going to hold off on doing this because the current Yorkists WR (Emulator) is without passwords, which shows that there isn't exactly 'no contest' between using passwords and not using passwords. It's just a personal routing difference. A good enough runner will contest password times in these shorter categories without using passwords - much different to any%!

from the rules: "Accepted emulators are VBA and VBA-rr. All other emulators are banned."

I have no objections to adding this as a misc. category if there are runs of it to be submitted. Go ahead and make this worth having a leaderboard for!

i see mafham's run using alt+f4, and it doesn't say it's not allowed in the rules, but i see other runners (playing on the latest version) not using alt+f4, even when it is so much slower to not use it, as well as some discussions on the forums saying that it shouldn't be allowed?

is it currently allowed, or not? if it is not allowed, shouldn't runs which used it before be removed?
