In NG+, die in Freezecopter level. Every single cutscene following this level (also those that are normally unskippable in NG+) will now be skippable.

Netherlandsratn2 years ago

Nice run!! Some tips:

  • No need to kill all the robots in the leak room in Lvl 2
  • You're also spending a lot of time getting hard to reach secrets, wastes a lot of time for Any%! Just get the minimum needed (see Any% route) and get out of there!
  • Use the ABB combo in bear cave
  • No need to kill the guys on the balcony in jetpack escape
  • Don't wast time changing weapons before moving. Change them while jumping so you don't waste time
  • Welcome to mall city, don't forget to skip cutscenes!
  • welcome to mall city - No need to fight the guard that comes out of the door in the main lobby!
  • Malll city courtyard: jump immediately left to avoid the cutscene trigger on the bridge
  • mall city courtyard: get the goodies on top of the glass in the final room!
  • use ABB or BAB on the security guards (they will grab you if you do AA- or BB-)
  • mall city: use slide tackles on the hooligans
  • home again: I recommend getting combos before health upgrades (which you honestly will not need once you get better) ammo upgrades are nearly useless...
  • home again: get the concussion rifle on the table in the living room!

The first step in speedrunning a game is understanding the game. Here are some open questions that would really help speedrunning B:V if they were answered!

Feel free to jump in and pick one of the tasks if you want to help out!

Find a setup to reproduce the fence skip in The Bridge: https://www.twitch.tv/ratn/clip/CovertSpikySangAsianGlow-rLybMuef5RIYzEyR

The main difference between Any% and NG+ is that Any% plays all the cutscenes, and keys must be obtained. It would be nice to have a rule of thumb to know approximately to what time a NG+ run would correspond to in Any%

When walking on top of the train carriages, the wind drag slows down the usual fast double-jump movement.

  • Time running and double-jump movement to see which is faster
  • Time going through carriages to see if that's faster than going above.

in the Freeze fight, you can only damage Freeze by dropping big vats on him using the power charges. We know that he can be damaged even if the vat does not fall directly on top of him. We also know that he takes less damage that way than if he stands directly under the vat.

  • Figure out what damage steps there are. Is it 0 damage if you miss, X% damage Freeze is beside the vat, and 100% if he is right under? Is it continuous?
  • Figure out how far the different damage steps extend. I.e., how close does Freeze have to be to the center of the shadow of the vat in order to receive that amount of damage?

In Ice Cold, we go out of our way to pick up some nets which help quickly getting rid of the three pistol women in the room right before our first encounter with Freeze.

  • Find out which weapons are present in this level, and where. Particularly: are there easily accessible nets?
  • Find out which weapons can dispose of the pistol women quickly.

In Car Chase, we drive around the city, then through a parking garage, then do a loop around back to that same parking garage until the car has reached 100% damage. The check on the car damage is done at the exit of the parking garage. Typically, 1 loop around is needed to get to 100% damage in RTA. Is it possible to get the car to 100% damage on the first time around?

  • Using TAS, do a perfect car chase with maximal damage to see if the loop-around can be avoided (car chase 1 cycle)

The Freezecopter seems to be taking very asymmetric damage. Investigate how much of a difference it makes to damage the freezecopter before the last sequence.

  • Measure the difference (if any) in damage needed to down the freezecopter during the last phase, having damaged it throughout the level, and not having damaged it at all.
  • Repeat the above using the machine gun only, and using the rockets only

In this clip, notice that dying during Car Chase can cause us to respawn with the escape car having more damage than before.

  • Identify the different respawn points in the level. Figure out which (if any) have the property of respawning with more damage on the scape car.
  • Figure out if this is a set amount of damage, or if it adds damage to the previous damage.

Picking a weapon is kind of confusing! Using the joystick or L button yields different orders.

  • Find the order of weapons using the joystick, or the L button.
  • Characterize the different fighting moves, using the two attack buttons (damage, speed, etc)
  • Characterize the power moves (damage, speed, etc)
  • Characterize the different weapons (damage, speed, does it stun the enemies or also "cuff" them?)

In NG+, here are the "unskippable" cutscenes:

Here is a list of open tasks to participate in the development of MRER speedrunning. When starting a task, you are welcome to create a new thread in the forum to start work and discussion there! Please contact me, @ratn if you need more information about a task, or have results.

Sometimes, one of the two enemies entering the first hallway in lvl1 don't make it into the hallway, which holds the door open, and fighting them can be skipped. It seems like having polygons active in the first room increases the chances of this happening (having the two goons from the first room loaded, having glass in the process of breaking, etc)

  1. Understand how to affect the probability of hallway skip occurring.
  2. Find setup to consistently produce hallway skip.

In Pepper Hotel, we know that thugs need to be defeated in order to open the door to the bathroom of the upper hotel room, and the door to the hallway in the lower hotel room. However it is not clear which or how many thugs need to be defeated to trigger the door to open.

  1. identify trigger for upper hotel room door.
  2. identify trigger for lower hotel room door.

In the last room of Pepper Hotel, precrime can randomly drop an impact shotgun. It appears like bringing one or two enemies from the staircase out to the next room increases the drop rate, but this is still unclear. Here is the current analysis: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16AlJeVZmaghw4uYEKazHxSCwMH-u9hiREVPEU5Xrgks/edit#gid=0

In light of knowing that the two first precrime in the staircase will drop a concussion rifle, and that they can despawn if brought into the next room, do a fresh analysis, trying to understand if, and if so how, the drop rates are affected.

In Sprawl Subway, in the final room, a certain amount of precrime need to be defeated for the level to end. When precrime in the final room are killed, new precrime will spawn. Not all precrime need be killed, as the level sometimes ends with precrime alive.

  1. Figure out which precrime(s) cause the end level trigger
  2. Figure out whether going down left or right affects this trigger.

A glitch was identified in Sprawl Riot, where when using the LRGARMS (invincibility) cheat, one could occasionally get killed anyway by a molotov cocktail, in which case John would respawn glitched. In this state, everything he touched would take a hit and be sent flying. See:

  1. Identify what causes the glitch exactly with LRGARMS cheat
  2. Reproduce glitch without LRGARMS
  3. Find setup for glitch
  4. Reproduce glitch in other levels with molotov cocktails (Pepper Hotel, Brawl in the Sprawl)

It seemed in this clip that Mosely took damage from electricity:

  1. Try to trigger a wave of precrime using the electricity to conclusively prove that the electricity does damage Mosely.
  2. Find a setup to hurt him using electricity.

Perform the following tests on NTSC:

Yeah, I think Lizard John is the most interesting skin due to him being able to run faster. Zombie John regenerates life, and I'm not sure whether Super John, Clown John and G.I. John have any special powers. I'm sure some new interesting glitches/skips could be found with Lizard John.

Topics that interest me: what attack or attack combo deals the highest DPS?

Should we do level by level speedruns, or whole game?

This thread is for posting level routes, a step-by-step instruction on how to complete a level in an efficient way.

Post only routes that differ significantly from normal play.

One level route per post.

Netherlandsratn6 years ago

In this thread, post glitches, strats, setups, or other exploits that you have found. I will include them in the OP

Structure

  • Name of exploit
  • Level(s) where exploit can be used
  • Description of exploit
  • TO-DO list for how to complete or improve on exploit

When running at top speed, jumping is about 10% faster. If you ever need to run for more than 2 seconds in one direction, remember to jump!

  • Level 1: Suspect: Andre Serena

You need 100$ by the time you are out of the building. Buy a grenade launcher.

Get to the other balcony using fast ledge travel. You must get to the other balcony as soon as possible or the strat will not work.

Drop down and immediately aim and shoot into the hallway through the open door.

[tag]This shot is precise, and you can use pause buffering to line up the shot correctly: hit pause, and tilt the aiming joystick to where you want John to aim. Hit pause twice very quickly. John will now have moved his aim by a small increment. Keep going until the shot is properly aligned. Release the joystick, unpause and immediately shoot.[/tag]

If done correctly, Serena will now be stunned and puking in the hallway. Break the glass, enter the hallway. As long as you don't pass the first corner, the door will remain open behind you. Damage Serena. Fast attack is fast, but a crouched sweep is more consistent. Pick Serena up, and throw him off the building.

  • Any level with a non-straight edge.
  • Executed in Lvl2, Lvl15

Jump to grab onto a ledge, and immediately aim your weapon mid-jump. During the jump, spin so that your back is facing the ledge. Release the aim button right before or as you hit the ground.

John will then grab the ledge with his back facing the ledge, and possibly start moving rapidly in one direction. No known exploits of this glitch yet.

TO-DO

  • Find an exploit using this glitch

  • Level 2: Suspect: Nikki Jameson

In the first room with the gas leak, you can reach the bridge with the button by jumping onto the big cylinder pumps. Jump onto the first pump under the middle of the first bridge, and place John as close to the bridge fence as possible. Run and jump to the second pump. Run around the central pillar to the other side, again place John into the corner. Run and jump again to the next pump.

This shortcut is technical and requires practice.

It is possible to kill two robots in one shot if they are close and in line of shot by using the Impact Shotgun.

  • Level 2: Nikki Jameson

At the top of staircase leading into the room where the grenade explodes, perform a roll down the stairs followed by bunny-hops straight ahead. This lets you pass the grenade before it explodes. Unfortunately, you find yourself stuck after this as the button to shut off the fire also triggers the level to continue.

TO-DO

  • Find a way to continue the level after skipping the grenade
  • Any level

It is possible in certain cases to chain roundhouse kicks. If each of these hit, they deal a lot of damage. Particularly effective for early Pre-crime (before they learn how to duck) or Andre Serena.

TO-DO

  • Find a setup to be able to perform this combo consistently.
  • Level 1: Andre Serena

After defeating the first two enemies of the level, one can pass the hallway without the door at the end closing. This is caused by one enemy which is supposed to enter the hallway through the exit door having a trouble pathing into the hallway and never making it in.

This seems only to happen when both enemy models and breakables are still loaded in the first room.

TO-DO

  • Figure out what causes this glitch to work occasionall
  • Find a setup to perform the glitch consistently
  • Level 7: Mall City Courtyard

At the very start of the level, jump off the bridge to the left to skip the cutscene with the robot.

  • All levels where precrime are lowered into the level.

When precrime are lowered from the sky into the level, use the concussion rifle to make them fall. If done when they are high enough, they will die instantly.

Trees which do not break instantly kill ragdolled enemies that touch them. Using the BAB combo, slide tackling, or simply picking up and throwing enemies into killer trees is an effective way of killing them

  • Level 40: Return of Suspect Nikki Jameson

At the very end of the level, making Nikki Jameson fall into the central pit instantly ends the game.

Jump onto the rim of the pit at either the front or back opening of the railing. Crouch and walk away from the pit, into the railing opening, keep walking. While in this position and when Nikki is near, aim your weapon.

If done correctly, Nikki will perform a grapple which will clip you through the railing (and to safety), while she herself will land behind you. In this case, behind you is the pit.

This exploit saves 1 to 2 minutes of fighting.

NOTE: When performing this strat, Nikki is not technically killed, even though the game does end. A secret is tied to Nikki's death, so if doing a run where getting secrets is expected, this strat cannot be performed, and Nikki's health bar must be emptied.

  • Every level with a ledge, notoriously, lvl1: Andre Serena, and lvl15: Steriflux Pumps

To travel along a ledge faster, push your desired direction, then let go to interrupt the animation mid-way, and push the direction again, repeat. The end of the animation is a recovery period, this trick effectively skips it and goes faster than just keeping the joystick tilted.

When jumping and doing either a strong or a fast attack mid-air (the result is identical), John will perform a jump-punch attack. This attack makes John jump higher and further than otherwise. Hitting the attack button very fast after jumping exacerbates the effect.

  • Level 7: Mall City Courtyard

After entering the vents, run towards the flow of air until you are in the first corner of the vent facing to the right. As soon as it stops, run-jump straight, take your second left and wait in the hole to your right until the second cycle finishes. If you reached this safety spot, you will be able to finish in 2 cycles, instead of the usual 4.

  • Level 21: To the sprawl!

You can pass the falling sewage with the jetpack by flying vertically, sticking close to the wall, and being at an angle parallel to the wall.

TO-DO

  • Find a setup to consistently perform this clip on all falling sewage. Currently, only the first falling sewage in the first section and the last falling sewage are reliably skipped.
  • Lvl23: Pepper Hotel

In the last room of the level, there is a random chance for precrime to drop impact shotguns. 1, 2, or 3 impact shotguns can drop. By bringing one or two precrime from the staircase into the final room, the chances of dropping an impact shotgun is increased.

As a bonus, if you are careful not to unload the enemy(ies) you brought in, and if you are sure the remaining (if any) in the staircase is deloaded, you will also drop a conussion rifle.

Level 34: Back in the sprawl

On the left side of the bus, walk up on the sidewalk. From there perform a jump-punch onto the bus. If done properly, you will be able to jump on top of the bus and skip the first section of the level.

Welcome to the Minority Report speedrun page.

If you are here, we are assuming that you are also a fan of this hopelessly unpopular, and -let's be honest- mediocre game.

But isn't it fun to fight a grenade launcher wielding business man, fly-headbutt into people, and throw people off skyscrapers in order to escape an accusation of future murder?

Yes it is, and after beating the game 10 times over as precrime officers first, then as lizards and supermans, we need a new challenge. Minority Report: Everybody Speedruns.

We welcome you to join us in the quest of making the painful yet exhilarating experience of playing this game as short as possible. Good luck to us all. -ratn

Here's the setup of this forum.
