Okay I just tried what I believe are Patch 0 and Patch 1 and I wasn't able to OOB on either on the first skip done in the WR run.

I did DM with Mountebank and they said they are on current patch but believes it is due to their PC being relatively poor hardware-wise, and generating additional lag that any reasonable PC is not going to be able to do. So unless we can somehow kneecap our hardware we won't be able to OOB the way they do. I have not yet checked to see if the OOB are possible on older patches but that is on my To-Do list.

I think it would have been valuable to have a discussion of some sort. There's really no other place I am aware of right now to discuss speedrunning the game. My main concern is that since the OOB glitches appear to mainly be hardware-related and so far restricted to one player who can actually do them, any other glitches that are found in the future that can be performed by any player will not even really be the same category/run. So in effect any glitched run now will still be different than the current Any% since only one person can actually do those specific glitches. I would have much preferred to have the current Any% Glitchless be called Any% No OOB to leave that door open to any future discoveries.

I was coming to post about the inability to do OOB and I didn't realize the boards had already been split.. no announcement or anything?

My 2 cents as someone who moderates other games - there should be a publicly available accounting of your findings if you are deleting runs off the boards. Period. I am concerned about the fact you did all of this without showing your evidence. It makes me nervous as a potential runner of this game that the moderator made a rules change and removed runs from the leaderboards without demonstrating why they were not valid.

In addition, if you are saying Bizhawk emulates correctly, that evidence should be available somewhere too. This game is NOT hard to find and play on hardware, so if you are saying emulators are okay you need to be showing how they compare to playing on hardware.

I will add though, I appreciate the game getting some more active moderation. I just think if you went to all the work to verify all these old runs weren't valid, you should share it with everyone.

I am not actively running the game but it is on my radar. I am very concerned that you are deleting old runs without a thorough explanation as to why they are being disallowed. Do you know for certain they were using the incorrect emulators? Or did you just delete everything older than the rules change that you enacted?

This is just incredible. Thank you so much for all the effort!

Glad someone is active again, had this game on my radar for awhile and I might try running it myself later this year! :)

Thanks and I do appreciate you kicking things off. I'm a little surprised and saddened the game has not garnered more speedrun interest due to the really neat movement. I'll do my best to help!

I'm in the process of learning to run this game because I really love the movement and the aesthetic but... it needs some help.

  • There needs to be an Any%
  • The current All Bosses run on the boards is not an all bosses run because it doesn't include Red Beard.
  • I don't understand why deathless categories are needed, period.
  • Timing rules need to be defined.
  • Alternate "main" categories could be things like All Bosses, All Memories, All Secrets, 100%, etc., but again they need to be defined.

I am currently working on what I consider to be Any% and All Memories which does not currently exist. I will leave this up for review and responses from the moderator until I am ready to submit a run as I currently can't submit for either of those categories.

Thanks! It was great to have some previous resources to learn from. The main thing we did to speed up the run was to pick up more health bonuses that allow for a ton more damage boosting in World 4 & 5. Plus Bursik found a really good technique to quick kill the final boss before transformation. Unsure if this was known before as it's hard to do consistently without a good setup.

Interesting stuff! I can't say I have seen either of these. I have noticed a few times where the game has "warped" me across the screen as a graphical error, but it's pretty minor and inconsistent. I do think Beating Heart is the one part of the run where some solid strats other than "run ahead, don't get knocked down, don't die" would help. I'll keep my eye out in future playthroughs.

Still needs some work but I wanted to get my current strats and thoughts down in order to prepare to submit the game to AGDQ.

One bit of tech I want to add (I will write a short guide to speedrunning the game in the coming weeks) is for Beating Heart, you can stagger your punch attack inputs to avoid the roundhouse kick that knocks the enemy to the ground (where they are immune until they stand up again), and in doing so you can basically stun lock all enemies so you can defeat them in one sequence of inputs. I currently refer to the strategy in my streams as stutter-punching.

I'd like to propose/clarify the Shadowplay and Kill Screen timing rules. There are a few issues with each that I have identified:

Shadowplay - If you wait for the demon head to completely cross the screen after the final stage, the game actually locks you out of quitting back to the main menu for several seconds. There is also no visual cue for the transition, only an audio cue. I would like to be a little more explicit in saying time is the MOMENT you see the demon head emerge from the right, because you need to quit out before it completely crosses the screen. I clipped a shot VOD of this to explain further:

Killscreen - Maybe it's just me but I have a hard time figuring out exactly what my last input in the final battle will be (unless I end with Heal I guess?) I think the rule should be changed to the moment when the screen minimizes after the final fight (it's a visual effect like a TV turning off).

And for the full game - No Cutscenes run, I think the final time should be when the credits begin to roll, like in the Full Game category. Reason being you still have inputs during the final cutscene to stand up and I feel like all player inputs should be included in any full game style run.

Let me know your thoughts, thanks!

Thanks for getting the game posted! I had submitted it myself along with a Full Game - No Cutscenes run. That category is needed for sure. As well as individual level categories.

Rules for the No CS category will be tricky. In my opinion there are two options. Either pick a visual cue for each game as the endpoint, or require players to Quit out of the cutscene menu, which only has (Continue/Quit) as options. In-game pause menu has (Continue/Controls/Quit). The latter is cleaner, but is also problematic because each game transitions out at a different time and there is no way to know you are in the cutscene until you pause the game. I'm starting to like the first option better, and it would also allow for the same endpoint in the full game run as the individual level runs (where they don't care about returning to the main menu). I would propose:

Beating Heart - Hooded figure jumps off wall. Out of the Void - Black screen after escape. Runaway - Time's Up message after reaching 0. Shadowplay - Demon head transition screen after final level. Kill Screen - final hit on boss for IL, full game not needed, just wait through until the end credits begin. :)

Curious for other's thoughts!

I tried the Kill Screen boss glitch last night and I softlocked due to using Heal as my first action before the game recognized I was in the boss fight. So just FYI that can happen. Good find though!
