aspect ratio mainly matters in tanks, the playfield is just bigger in 16:9 some others have miniscule differences like shooting range, find mii, laser hockey, etc. as far as we know 4:3 is either faster or the same speed as 16:9 for every category

so no overall its not a big deal

thank you for your input! other than nice% which we're definitely not adding, these are some pretty good suggestions. charge jumpless would definitely fit in with the other charge challenges and pose mii all levels would be cool to try to optimize. as for individual medal categories, some of them wouldn't really work that well due to having very little or no room for improvement (like laser hockey and table tennis), but others would definitely be nice to have. we could consider adding those to the IL grid and just making some of the resulting categories unsubmittable.

anyway, we'll be discussing these shortly. if you'd like to weigh in, i'd encourage you to join our discord server (https://discord.gg/7sPegcQ) and go to the #wii-play channel since that's where we'll probably be talking about it. thanks!

100% is an inherently arbitrary category in this game, as it is in many other similar games, because there really is no "end goal" - there is no state of total completion. because of this, it's not really possible to create a category that you could reasonably consider "100%"... but you can get close.

in Wii Play, we approached this issue by creating a category called Highest Achievements, which basically requires the player to get the maximum score in each minigame that the game specifically recognizes. for example, the requirement for Fishing is to get a score of 2600 points or above, because that minimum score is specifically recognized by the game with a platinum medal. while it is possible to get a score higher than 2600 points, which is technically a higher achievement, the game does not uniquely recognize that in any way. therefore, the requirement is 2600.

the beautiful thing about this principle is that it eliminates any issues with determining maximum scores, which we don't actually know for some minigames. for example, a TAS could probably get upwards of 30 points in one game of Laser Hockey, but no single person is capable of finding the human limit. we could just decide to set our own requirement, like 20 points, but that would make the category completely meaningless. in the game of Wii Play Laser Hockey, "20 points" is indistinguishable from any other random number.

so going back to the original subject, Wii Sports, we can see some parallels. we don't actually know the maximum skill level values for some (any?) of the five games. we could just set our own requirement, like 2000 points, but that would be completely arbitrary. instead, let's look for all the highest achievements that the game uniquely recognizes. spoiler alert, there are two (to my knowledge):

  • all platinum medals
  • all pro class

could this be an interesting run? sure! but it's pretty minimal compared to what you originally suggested. the question of whether the community wants a leaderboard for it will have to be its own separate discussion.

edit: just saw plyd's post, I had no idea about those wii message board achievements so I guess it wouldn't be such a minimal run after all... very interesting. I might personally suggest a combination of option 1 and option 2. that wasn't really the main point of writing this anyway though, just wanted to share some perspective on how I think completionist categories in these types of games should be approached

no it doesn't matter, it's a symmetrical area therefore neither order is faster. even if there was a difference, there aren't any rules about how you complete any% other than finishing the game with verifiable video proof. smallant just thinks he's the most revolutionary comedian of all time, move along with your life

In the site's current state it seems that the order of games on user profiles are strictly arranged by which games you've most recently submitted runs of. Is there any reason we couldn't have a feature allowing us to "pin" certain games at the top or control the order entirely? I feel like this would be a great method of customization for speedrun profiles, since you could ensure the first thing people see is what you're most proud of or what best defines you as a speedrunner.

dude just a word of advice, please don't buy one of those generic $20 capture cards, it's gonna be jank as hell and it might work for you but it might also break in two days. just point a camera at your screen until you can get an elgato/avermedia honestly, unless you're in a situation where you absolutely need some sort of capture card for some reason. buying cheap stuff is always nice if it works but cheap capture cards (and certain other multimedia electronics) are extremely unreliable

ok just gonna put this out there, if there are decent guides that are already in existence and you don't have anything new to add, why would you make another guide with the same information? that'll probably just end up confusing people

TA changes the entire of the meta of the speedrun and creates a very uneven playing field, as such putting RTA and TA runs on the same leaderboard makes it much less accurate

also no one's stopping you from doing a TA aum/hundo run yourself and just not submitting it, like people do that all the time

yeah generally when you want help for something people need some sort of an idea of what you're doing wrong

this is a completely arbitrary category because unlike resort, wii sports doesn't have a superstar class achievement or a consistent max level across all the sports, so getting to skill level 2000 doesn't have any particular significance

Pennsylvania, USAcyndifusic3 years ago

my take is if you're a beginner honestly just do whatever the hell you want because when you're still figuring out fundamental aspects of how the game works, it's a waste of your time to try to be super metacognizant of your approach to speedrunning in general

any% is immensely helpful with getting used to the game, as other categories can be quite a bit more daunting for beginners to start off with. however, don't get any% tunnelvision - it's great that you're aware that there are plenty of other options for categories out there. try multiple categories and run whatever you enjoy the most, but be aware that starting with any% can greatly improve your experience with longer categories.

yeah mitch could get record instantly in this even without the skips but top runners really just don't care much about this category

bowling 0 to pro doesn't really compare with winning one game of any other sport against a champion, besides the point of the category is supposed to be all sports but with a harder twist and the point of all sports is to play one game of every sport. all golf tour falls under the same thing

try running an aux cable from your switch's headphone jack to your computer's microphone jack and recording the audio in audacity, then you can sync up the recording later with the video from your camera
