Hi, could someone link these two categories to Heroes of Might and Magic III and modify their Game Types? https://www.speedrun.com/hommii

HoMM III: Horn of the Abyss as a Modification. https://www.speedrun.com/hommiii_hota

HoMM III: Custom Maps as a Server/Map. https://www.speedrun.com/hommiii_custom_maps

If there is a custom map and/or custom campaign you'd like to submit for the Leaderboard and it's not there, please post here so I may update the settings.

If there is a custom map and/or custom campaign you'd like to submit for the Leaderboard and it's not there, please post here so I may update the settings.

Please leave a note if there are multiple versions of a map/campaign and what version of said map/campaign you are submitting.

If you have a map or campaign scenario you'd like to submit for the Level Leaderboard and it's not there, please post here so I may update the leaderboard and approve your run. If it's a set of scenarios for a campaign, please post here as well.

Also, please keep it to the default maps, i.e. not custom scenarios or scenarios that did not come with the base games. If you would like to submit runs for custom maps/scenarios, please submit them here: https://www.speedrun.com/hommiii_custom_maps

If anyone is interested, I've created a webpage for the Horn of the Abyss fan modification here: https://www.speedrun.com/hommiii_hota Likewise, please leave runs for that mod there and separate from the main game.

We finally have a webpage for the request In-Game Days category. Rules will be implemented in due time. https://www.speedrun.com/hommiii_in_game_days

Hi, there's been discussion of in-game days before, primarily on the HoMM III webpage: https://www.speedrun.com/hommiii/thread/p1yyj

So it comes down to if the admins would create another webpage if there was more interest and demand for a category that isn't based on real time attempts. I can ask again on the forum, but it'll probably be ignored again.

Hi, I fixed the oversight on Kexibq2134's run; apparently submitting as '76 ms' translates to 076ms and not 760ms. Similarly related: for other runs that are either 'not timed properly', I can only judge so well based on how imprecise their timer programs are and their start-to-finish input . Compared to kiszak's run that I can advance each frame and see the timer increase every millisecond, advancing frames on others' videos leaves gaps that I can't be sure to add/remove from the final time.

As for an autosplit, that would depend on the demand for precision and competitiveness. As the current leaderboards stand, times aren't close enough to require milliseconds except for Tutorial (some exceptions here and there). I welcome it, but I say the runs don't need that strictness right now.

There is the original CD for DOS if you could get a copy, but the easiest way is to pick-up a copy from GOG.com. Runs on DOSBox and doesn't have issues as far as I've experienced.

I'll adjust the leaderboards to separate categories.

I was informed about certain aspects of the speedrun by Septimus1933.

The first concern is about the reload at 17:35. That is reloading a save that starts at the beginning of the next campaign right after beating the previous scenario. This is the equivalent of restarting the scenario under the Info menu.

The next concern is that it is a segmented speedrun rather than an uninterrupted playthrough. For context in the early years of speedrunning (on speeddemosarchive.com), runs were submitted in segments for various reasons, like for individual levels or some games weren't viable for a complete playthrough at the time. For this game, there wasn't a submitted run in years. At the very least, this run is a reference for future runners who wish to participate. The rules are fairly lax here as there's no competition currently (and it is a slog to play this old game as it is to watch a run to the end).

If there are any other concerns, please leave a comment under this thread.

Hi, could you add https://www.speedrun.com/hommiii_ce for Category Extension(s) for Heroes of Might and Magic III? There have been a couple requests over time mainly for comparing attempts for the shortest in-game days.

Massachusetts, USAadamdotpng4 years ago

@Hearn Thanks for finding that; didn't know you could request a new game page just for side-categories; sounds like a new feature. I'll ask the main mods if they could make a new page for in-game days.

Ok, left a request on the main forums. Will update when it goes through.

@Hydralicious My issues with music was related to verifying HoMM III speedruns, but should apply here and for other game's speedruns. Some had no sound effects/music or had non-game music covering the game's. One way for me to verify runs is to listen to inconsistencies when I watch, barring when the game lags/stutters.

@mikethev Currently yes I can be lax about verifying runs. As mentioned before, my responsibility as a mod is to ensure runs are on an equal level and they haven't been edited or such.

As for game version, I assume the base game is version 1.00, 1.01, 1.02, etc. depending if there were later discs released at the time. For the expansion, I assume similar, 1.10, 1.11, or 2.00, 2.01, etc. I'm definitely not strict on that, as I'd have to look into it and I'm not sure it'd be on levels of optimization

Hi, would you mind allowing me to be a Super Mod for Heroes of Might and Magic III? I am a current mod of the game; I believe there were a couple forum posts removed and would like to look into it, among taking care of the main responsibilities that a regular mod cannot.

Hi there. I recall answering a question about allowing for the best amount of days for a campaign, but it seems the user who asked about it years ago deleted the thread, nor is there such a thread in the other HoMM games.

I approached this idea to the aforementioned link before: https://www.speedrun.com/rayman_1#Any_Damageless ; but now that link does not redirect to such a category anymore. I believe this suggests the mods there have redone their categories to timer-based speedruns only. I would like to take example and keep runs to equivalent categories, as is the theme of speedrun.com .

Another example why this idea wouldn't work for this game on this website is there's the chance multiple users would submit the same amount of days and suggests redundancy allowing the 'same' gameplay on the leaderboard, if that makes sense.

I hope this helps give an understanding of what is expected for HoMM III on speedrun.com.

Small update, the cheater category is now a miscellaneous category. It is still available but won't be prevalent on the main leaderboard.

Hi, sorry for the delay in responding.

As there's not much going on in any of the HoMM speedruns these days (a new run is submitted once in a while and I'll review it as best I can), there hasn't been feedback for a while now for improving categories or adjusting rules for consistency, ex. music in submissions are a mixed bag (I might be thinking of HoMM III runs though).

I can adjust the categories as you ask; the main categories being 'No Manipulation' and 'Manipulation Allowed'. I can leave 'Cheats' as a Misc. category so it's not prominent on the Leaderboards, and so previous runs submitted aren't removed/hidden.

My issue for adjusting the categories are revising rules and how future runs should be submitted. For Manipulated runs, it would require showing the specific scenario before starting the campaign. For No-Manip, my issue is how to verify they haven't been fixed/edited, such that to skip showing the scenario and just begin the run. Albeit that's for the original version, the GOG version might have a way as well, but that's something to worry for later.

I have updated the categories as suggested. I'd appreciate any feedback to help improve the rulesets.

If you would like to bring up this issue with the admins, please contact them in the main forums.

I as a mod do not have the ability to create a separate category for in-game days, mostly because there isn't such an option. I have a brief answer for a similar question/request in the Heroes III forum, here: https://www.speedrun.com/hommiii/thread/p1yyj .

The main objective of speedrun.com, as I conclude, is to compete with others in real-world/in-game time, based on what the community discusses is appropriate for the game. In-game days is not a good measure between players' abilities with regards to real-time.

From what I can speculate, it's a glitch when using Resurrection when two (or more) dead, 2-hex units overlap with each other. In the video, the main problem was where the spell was casted. Griffins overlapped Hydras so that three hexes were occupied, then the spell was casted in the middle of the two units. The game didn't know which to prioritize, so I assume it tries to act like both are resurrected.

The other problem (that I didn't expect) was the unit of dead Minotaur Kings underneath the Griffins. So, what happens when you try to resurrect a dead unit that is underneath a resurrected unit and that resurrected unit is supposed to not be resurrected? Um, I don't know. As we see, the Minotaur Kings were made pretty much invincible; they can attack, you can still target them, but you can't damage them. So the battle is essentially soft-locked.

This is such a niche glitch that I can't believed worked out like that. I dreaded the spell RNG going into the final fight before, but if you wonder why you should worry about how units are positioned in a battle, this is it. At least now Heroes of Might and Magic II can be placed in the category of "World Records with 'This Has Never Happened Before.' ".

Similarly, this happened to me once when there were Phoenixes over lapping with Dragons; I got two bands of Phoenixes in the battle that way. The Dragons are immune to magic, so thankfully this did not soft-lock that battle.

I apologize for being harsh towards you; I'm not in the best state of mind right now.

I probably will get rid of Cheater% as I get more feedback on the idea. Easy to implement, hard to get right.

My fault. I neglected that rule when I accepted the run.

Should I just get rid of Cheater% if banning the use of Instant Win seems arbitrary compared to the use of other cheats?
