From what I've heard, and from what I've experienced, playing the first loop of J Contra is the same difficulty level as playing 2nd or 3rd loop of USA Contra. Can anyone else verify this?
If that's true, then they are not the same experience, beyond just the graphical differences and level transition skip.
Take a look at the upper left corner. I made it today and added it to all 3 of the NES game pages. If mods of other Double Dragon versions want to use it on other game pages, feel free!

We didn't have a Discord channel yet, so I went ahead and made one!
If any of the game mods join, I will make you an administrator. It's not MY channel. It's OUR channel.

Thanks for the response, Foulco, and congratulations on the recent WR.
Hey, everyone.
I did my first "faster-than-casual" run through the game yesterday (I haven't actually learned to speedrun it yet, just tried to beat it as fast as possible). During this attempt, I got stuck in the underwater cave leading to the first "dungeon" (not sure what you guys call them in this game) of chapter 6. Upon entering the door, where you would normally get a game save screen, followed by warping you to a hallway with open doors, I instead just walked straight into a hallway- one that you would normally never see in the game- that had a closed door. I tried walking in an out several times, but it never triggered the save screen, the door never opened and I couldn't find a way out. So, afaik, I stumbled into a softlock.
Is this a glitch anyone has ever seen before? I've played the game many times and have watched many runs and never saw this. I googled it and found no reference to it happening to anyone else.
Anyway, what I did was just reset the game, load the games save file and continued playing, starting from the beginning of chapter 6 again. This was no problem because I wasn't doing an actual speedrun and wasn't even recording, but I wonder if the StarTropics community allows re-loading the save file in the case of a softlock, or if the run is invalidated if you do so. Thanks in advance for the info!
Glad we can have a good discussion about this. I thought this game was mostly dead :p
RE: Regions- Is the PAL version substantially different than the NTSC version? I've never tried it. I'm on the fence about what I think about different versions being main vs misc categories, so I apologize for having not much to add about it. I'm still kinda new to being a game moderator and haven't thought much about things like this before.
RE: Kneeless- The reason why I was hoping for a kneeless category is because we have a lack of variety with play styles (other games have low%, warpless, glitchless, etc but DD2 doesn't lend itself well to such variation) and because when I shared the idea with others (current non-runners), it piqued some interest in taking a look at a game that many are intimidated by. I guess I have a different philosophy on the matter than others do, because I don't mind arbitrary categories so long as it makes a meaningful difference in how the game progresses and if people will actually play it. However, after considering what's been said by others, I'm happy to concede that we don't need the category to be added to the site. I'm content to run it and share it with others informally. It's clear that it's more a labor of love for me that others just aren't as excited about. No biggie.
RE: Deathless- We have 3 places that deaths are typically abused in a run, and none of them make a substantial difference in how the game progresses. In fact, in my own any% runs, I avoid one of them entirely because I just don't care for it. I'm in favor of nixing this one, although I might also try it informally- especially if I'm just trying to do no-reset playthroughs.

I'd work on completing an attempt to post in such a sub category, but I wouldn't grind attempts to improve my time. That's a sliver of interest on my part, anyway.
