Bear with me here, as I only half understand how this glitch works.

In my first ever playthrough of the game, I accidentally did this glitch and got to the end early, not knowing until after I watched a speedrun of the game that it wasn't the real ending (though I had my suspicions, as it made no sense). It happens in the hole after the gas station that leads to the toxic-waste-looking area. If you slowly go down the right side, it won't enter you into the room as normal, and eventually you go through the wall and fall infinitely. This will sometimes just cause you to respawn after a bit, but a few times it has warped me to the credits. I think you have to be falling near the entrance of the bottom of the hole; maybe something to do with the game not knowing what entrance you've arrived at and thus defaulting to the credits, though I'm not much of a coder so that is just speculation. This saves a lot of time and I plan on using it in a run!

Long time lurker here. It's awesome to see a new glitch bring Any% to sub 2:00, but with that said it might be interesting to split the category in half based on whether or not OOB is used. I feel like a lot of people would be interested in watching/running Any% w/o OOB. I don't mean this to discredit the new runs though, they're rad! Just might be a good idea.

This isn't a major change, but is important for anyone running full world ILs in the future:

"Full game runs will use RTA, and IL runs will use IGT. ILs of entire world may use either; IGT will always be faster in those instances, but will also be more time consuming to time for players and moderators alike, so this distinction is purely for ease of submissions. If a run is submitted that's faster in RTA than the WR but slower in IGT, a retime in IGT may be used if applicable."

I literally only did this because a new WR was submitted with RTA and I really didn't want to put in the IGT lol.

In all seriousness, I think this will be good for accessibility to the category. Again, IGT can be implemented at any time, so I may even go back and retime any runs that use RTA. That said, if you want your run measured in IGT, I suggest doing so yourself and presenting your math to make submissions under IGT easier. This rule may change in the future if I can find an easy way to automate measurements of IGT, which would render the accessibility and IRL time issues moot.

It appears that this is a Scratch game that you made, but after finding your profile it looks like there's no way to access it. Can you link the game, and release it if you haven't?

Attached is a video showing how to skip the first boss. I’m not yet to the level where this could give me a world record or anything , but I definitely think the community should know about it so that a record can use it. A few addendums to the video:

  • This IS possible in all versions; I bit the bullet and bought the NES version to make it slightly easier to record and to test the glitch. On that note, imho I think the platforms should still be in the same category, as the differences between versions seem purely aesthetic. Totally cool if you don’t, I’ll probably run all versions but I think maybe putting it so that new platform runs don’t obsolete old platform runs for individual players instead.
  • The glitch is consistent when done correctly, I just wasn’t consistent enough to make it work well yet.
  • The glitch works elsewhere, but so far this was the only real practical use I could find. The little prologue part can use it to skip the room with the large door, but the first room scrolls longer as a result so I believe any time saved is less than half a second if any time at all. More testing needed to be sure, of course.

Enjoy! Hope to have an okay run submitted soon.

Hello, I just played this game and want to speedrun it, but it looks like there needs to be some updating. There’s now a version 1.35 for Evercade and PC that removes the NES part of the name, which seems to be identical to the 1.3 version minus the new name so that much might not have to be changed, but the new platforms should be added at least. Thanks, and I hope to speedrun this soon, probably on Evercade!

(This technically can apply to NG+ as well but is usually redundant in that category.)

Considering that Steam makes starting a new file a hassle, combined with the fact that the PC version is the optimal version to run for full game runs, I've edited the rules so that old saves can be used in NG runs without giving what would otherwise be an unfair advantage to users of old files; as a matter of fact, a full New Game will still be optimal, but as I've said, starting new saves is very inaccessible on PC.

For those familiar with the separation of timing methods in Super Mario Sunshine, the new rule works in a similar manner: in Sunshine, if you use a glitch to skip certain cutscenes, it saves time irl but the time saved is added back so as not to punish players who don’t mind sitting through them, as they’re not normally able to be skipped. Similarly, we will add back a rounded-up time to the run for old save files, which will differ depending on the category. For the new games on every category, this is how much time will be added back:

55 Levels: 3m 8sec 80 Levels: 4m 33sec 105 Levels: 6m 0sec All Levels and All Stars: 8m 42sec

Those starting on a new save will take longer irl, but will be at an advantage to old files, as the time added back for each is assuming that (1) every IL received 3 stars (which is a timeloss of about 3.233 seconds per level), and (2) the time taken to get back on track after getting the new world unlocked notifications is about ten seconds for each notification, which is relatively slow. This is rounded down to fifteen seconds total for 80 Levels (instead of twenty), as transitioning to the new worlds is necessary for this category alone. On that note, it should be known that levels still have to be played in order. 80 Levels is currently the only category where levels can be skipped, as it literally requires it. This will be changed if the need arises.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Hi there, it’s really cool to see this game on SRC! A lot of these games that are also downloadable have the platforms listed to differentiate them, and I think the same should be done here (i.e., PC, Linux, Web). Looking forward to a possible sub 1 minute!

Hi, I’m a speedrunner and I moderate a few games. A lot of the categories here aren’t as transparent as they could be and could turn off newcomers, so I have a few suggestions.

  • Game rules should be added and category rules should be more specific. Exact timing should be specified here as well (i.e., rules should state some variation of “time starts here and ends here”). Depending on how this is approached, certain runs might need their times adjusted.
  • “lvl 0 to boss end of boss 1” is presumably just starting from the beginning and beating the very first boss with the cat paw coming through, but that isn’t made clear. Rules are needed, and I suggest a more concise title for the category.
  • It should be specified that when playing on Evercade, turbo is not allowed; that, and maybe also allow a separate category for using turbo. This clarity is needed as turbo is built right into the port for the Evercade.

If you need an extra mod to help with this for free, I volunteer, but of course that isn’t necessary. I plan to do a run of this game soon and look forward to it, and let me know what you think of my thoughts.

Hey there, I’m interested in running this game and have been practicing a bit, and I had a quick question: is showing a replay aloud for submissions, or does it have to be “live” gameplay? Since it counts frames and shows a seemingly one-to-one replay, I figured there’s probably no issues with it, but in case I was missing something or there was worry of TAS runs being put in through this, I wanted to check. Thanks in advance.

I’ve only just started doing practice runs of Dread and haven’t even given the door glitch a legitimate attempt, but the notes for patch 1.0.3 seem to allude to the EMMI door glitch that allows for intangibility. It not only mentions damage detection, but adds a note underneath that they had “decided” to fix it “because there is a possibility that it may occur unintentionally,” which to me sounds like a way of saying “look, we know it’s weird that we removed this speedrunning glitch and not others, but this is why.” I’m gonna try it out for a bit, but can someone more experienced confirm one way or the other?

I mentioned this in passing in the Discord server awhile back, but it seems like there's a mistake in the name for "Any%". If I'm not mistaken, any% requires a minimum of 80 levels to complete, not 70. I have all three versions of the game and can't remember offhand if the level requirements differed on any versions, but I'm pretty sure they didn't and that they're all 80.

I happened to notice that my and 30Aces' runs moved up from tied for 4th to tied for 3rd. Was a run removed, and if so is a mod at liberty to say why? Just curious of course.

This leaderboard is still a work in progress. It will be cleaned up and ILs will be added. Please leave any questions you have for me here!

When the "Definitive Edition" remake of this game came out on Switch, they also ported the original to the system, and it seems unchanged from the MS-DOS version. Could the Switch be added to the list of platforms? Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, I was interested in checking this game out and doing a casual playthrough before trying a run of it. Is there a big reason why console and PC are separated? I'd have the option between Switch and PC for myself, so if one would be significantly slower or anything (for loading times or otherwise) I'd rather not buy that one, of course. My PC isn't great but seems like it could run this game fine.

I know this game isn't super active, but I've been enjoying running it lately and I suggest a change to the way the runs are categorized. For level selects, there are two versions of LOVE, that being LOVE and LOVE+. Though they are structurally nearly identical, they have different speeds. For example, the level 2 world record is run on LOVE+ instead of the designated LOVE, but when I ran both ILs I was easily able to finish the LOVE+ version a full second faster. Why are they put together, and can we please have the missing ILs put in?

Why is there not a category for Gourmet Race, both as a full race and for individual courses? Not only that, couldn't there be individual runs for each of the "8 Games"? I know the "Ultra" version does that, but I haven't got that game and don't plan on buying it anytime soon, and I doubt I'm alone in that.
