For the purposes of the leaderboards it would be considered an emulator, and would most likely be allowed if it runs at the same speed or slower than an actual SNES console. Some testing may be required to figure out exactly what speed it runs at, and how well it emulates lag.

We generally don't add categories unless at least a few people have run them. If you think there's merit to them, then run them yourself, and convince people to run them, and maybe they'll get added. That being said, 96 ExitS is a silly meme category and I personally don't see the benefit to having more categories like it

Yep, you're correct about this. The PAL versions of Wii U VC, SNES Classic and Switch Online all use the US version of the game, so they should be classified as such on the leaderboards.

I'm currently going through all the PAL runs for these consoles to fix the region, and I've made a note so that hopefully all the leaderboard mods should be more aware of this.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

There's no official 3DS release of SMA2, so this would count as emulation. As long as it runs the same speed or slower than original hardware it won't be banned

Ok, watch this video on tubular wings on this page if you haven't already http://smwspeedruns.com/index.php/Tubular To answer the questions in your edits:

  • Tubular Wings work on all versions of the game (even PAL, if I recall correctly)
  • Spitting the p-switch into the side of the pipe won't work, because the p-switch needs to have been thrown upwards in order to get the wings factory

The key for tubular wings is to hold B (or A) fairly late when you're bouncing on the spring. This will give you enough height to get just underneath the p-balloon block without hitting it, so that you can throw the p-switch into the wall. There are a few different things you can use as cues for when to start holding B, such as when the spring expands all the way, or when the pitch of the spring sound starts to move upwards. There isn't really a solid cue that'll work for everyone, and it'll vary depending on whether you're playing on console or emulator, so it's really a matter of experimenting and finding something that works for you.

It's also worth noting that tubular wings only save 15 seconds, so they're by no means a necessary strat starting out.

We have a discord for SMA2 speedrunning now! https://discord.gg/nVwSNVJ

Not sure why that "guide" was there, it's deleted now. The game certainly could benefit from some sort of central repository of knowledge though, I'll see what I can do about putting something together

Each level page on the Super Mario World wiki - www.smwspeedruns.com - shows which powerups that level contains. It doesn't show specific locations at the moment, but that's something I could look into adding.

Did you not read dots' comment? The run did happen, and was publicly viewable for months. That's why we're in this situation, if there hadn't have been any evidence to begin with, the run would never have been put there.

Victoria, AustraliaSten7 years ago

The run was on the boards for a long time, but runner chose to withdraw it and delete the video. We know it's legit, and want it there for the sake of leaderboard accuracy, but the runner would prefer not to be named.

Victoria, AustraliaSten7 years ago

I don't see why not, but seeing as you'd have to use an emulator of some sort to load SMW, the run should be marked accordingly.

I'd recommend not bothering with cloud 'til you have at least sub 11 in glitchless, maybe sub 10:50. The cloud fight is much harder than the rest of the run combined, so I don't think it's worth bothering with it until you're fairly consistent with the rest of the run.

I suppose it could, however I'd be interested in knowing where luigi saves time over mario, and how you got your run within 4 seconds of the TAS

Small mario only, No Yoshi (Just like the category rules say) :P
