If what you’re saying is true, then I suppose it would be a good idea to try to prevent that sort of accidental misinformation about how the game works and the quality of a run. I hesitate to outright delete something a runner said about their run, so perhaps putting a disclaimer alongside it would be worthwhile. I’ll leave the topic open for more opinions but I will likely do that if the discussion points to it.

If there’s support among the community, we would certainly be willing to implement this. There’s no set time or number for what determines support, but everyone can share their opinions if they wish.

That’s not necessary, we agreed to keep all 0.9.9 runs which were uploaded prior to making the rule change, which hasn’t happened yet. If you’ve already taken them down you can resubmit them.

United StatesRunaway3 years ago

Hello. The mod team is still trying to come to a consensus on this, but it seems like we are going to be allowing versions of Mesen before 0.9.9, which added a feature to reduce lag which gives its users an unfair advantage. You will likely have to give proof of the version you are playing on using Mesen.

All runs using Mesen before now will be grandfathered in. This isn’t fully confirmed yet, but it’s more likely than not what will happen.

Welcome to the WARSAW speedrun.com leaderboard.

Honestly, I don't expect this to really gain much attention. But I will dutifully report any major changes to the leaderboard here, and if anyone wants to suggest anything for the leaderboard, they may do so here as well.

United StatesRunaway3 years ago

Consider yourself modded, then.

United StatesRunaway3 years ago

If you'd like to be a moderator, say the word and we'd be happy to have you. Mod or not, we certainly would appreciate your advice for us and for the community. The overall discussion on the number of mods has stalled somewhat, though you may have notice one has resigned, thank you to them for their time here, but I'm very sure everyone in the community would be willing to make an exception for you if you're willing.

United StatesRunaway3 years ago

Hey, everyone, I have an update on the mod situation. While I won't name names just yet for the sake of privacy and a potentially changing situation, two moderators have agreed to step down. We have considered taking this and demoting a number of current moderators to just verifiers, leaving us with three or so mods and two verifiers, if that solution is acceptable to the moderators and the community. Of course, this is just an idea and we may end up with less moderators total in the end, depending on how further discussions pan out.

As I understand it, this is the last major grievance people had with the board. We've come a long way in a short amount of time. Of course, if anyone has anything to add, feel free to do so.

@Flynntendo

There’s been a large reorganization of the board since this and reducing the number of moderators is one of the things on the list. We’ve made progress on doing so and we can expect a definitive result sooner rather than later.

Alright, keeping in mind timezones and people’s obligations, I’ll take the silence as approval and start retiming runs in a couple hours, to be finished by the end of the day EST.

By the way, the number of mods is still being discussed. You may have gotten a notification about a new mod - that was one of the original mods who was take off accidentally. I’ll come back to you with news about this when we finalize it, but we’re working to find a solution to please everyone.

Here's the new thread discussing the changes to the leaderboards.

United StatesRunaway3 years ago

Hey everyone. This thread is going to be used both for informing the community about changes to the leaderboard and for making suggestions to the moderators.

As promised, we have went ahead and radically redid the board. There are now seven categories: High Score, Any%, SMB+RR Any%, SMB%, Rad Racer%, Rad Racer+Tetris High Score, and Rad Racer+Tetris Any%. The latter three are in the miscellaneous category. These categories were chosen after the discussions we had in the other thread yesterday, but if anyone would like to suggest a new one or an edit to an existing one, please do.

Timing methods have also been decided upon for each and every category. Please do check them out and say something here if you have feedback on them. We intend on retiming existing runs to fit these new rules, but not without first getting community approval as to their implementation.

We also added the background made by @Bro3256. Big thanks to them.

Looks great. I’ll see if I can implement it after I wake up tomorrow.

United StatesRunaway3 years ago

@AriesFireTiger Don't worry about it. It's easy to go a bit off the rails in the heat of the moment, but ultimately it's leading to changes for the better.

@MagicK

After the category reorganization there's certainly going to be increased emphasis on the things you mention. For one, the high score category is being moved up to the front, since that'll be the focus of the game.

The five lines Tetris was a mistake on our end, which is going to be totally redone after the reorganization.

In the interest of transparency, I will say that timing has been an issue throughout this whole thing. It seemed like none of us could settle on a consistent one, especially as some of us brought different philosophies as to how things should be timed. For example, should runs starting with Mario begin upon pressing start on the second controller, or when 400 appears, like in normal SMB1 runs? That was the sort of difficulties we encountered. That said, this problem is going to be solved alongside the category reorganization. We finally came to an agreement on how to time runs, and will be implementing them while also releasing them to the community for feedback. This shouldn't have been an issue, considering it is the most basic issue for a speedrun leaderboard, and for that we are incredibly sorry.

On the topic of mods, the reason there's so many is simply that the original moderator needed help, and anyone who agreed in the first few minutes was modded. While I certainly don't want to force anyone off the team, it's something that we undoubtedly need to discuss, and I hope to have a definitive answer tomorrow alongside the timing and category reorganizations. If @ShesChardcore would be willing to join the moderation team, I would absolutely be on board with it.

I'm probably not going to be going asleep soon, so don't be surprised if this isn't my final post, but I just want to say sorry for all the troubles one more time, and thank everyone for sticking with us. I believe the discussions we had today, though perhaps a bit stressful and difficult, laid the groundwork for this community to improve drastically. Thank you all.

United StatesRunaway3 years ago

@AriesFireTiger Thank you for the suggestions. Of the seven you suggested, we are definitely going ahead with five of them (I don’t think I’ve mentioned, but RR any% is going to be put into miscellaneous). That leaves RR+Tetris any% and high score. I certainly don’t have any issue with them and though the other mods aren’t online currently, I don’t imagine any of them would either, though it would be in miscellaneous, I think. Once we do the reorganization of categories sometime likely tomorrow, I think we can add all those.

@Rayquaza911 As far as I know, the only reason Tetris was set to 5 lines was because we failed to take into account what the community wanted and weren’t fully sure what to do with Tetris. It’s certainly one of the problems we are going to be fixing going ahead, as is part of the current plan.

Okay, after discussions with other mods, we have come to various conclusions:

The categories on main will be: High Score, any% (25 lines), SMB1, and SMB1+RR. Super Mario Bros will go on main because it is most unlike just playing the actual game compared to RR and Tetris, while SMB1+RR can get grandfathered into the main list because it is the second most popular category currently and we don't want to put that into miscellaneous. I know that's a point of contention though, and we aren't opposed to just putting them into miscellaneous.

We have discussed adding a deathless Mario to the miscellaneous, but that's not finalized. We are also likely to have the final timing methods by tomorrow at the latest. We will inform everyone what they are when that happens, likely on a new thread.

We would very much appreciate your feedback on this, and I will be here for the next five or so hours at minimum to respond. If you would like to critique these plans or have ideas for other categories, please do share.

Okay, to back up words with action:

We have three main priorities right now. The first is finding a better place for Tetris in the leaderboards. We were wrong to ignore it especially after people asked for it. We are looking into how runs with Tetris, either on its own or as part of a larger run, can fit onto this leaderboard. For this, we are taking inspiration from the Tetris leaderboards themselves, and we hope to incorporate JSR's input into it. Again, we are so sorry for having ignored it in the first place. It is our mistake and ours alone.

The second is about timing. There has been some confusion about when to begin and end timers, and very soon we intend on finalizing a timing method for each and every category. It is again our mistake that this hasn't been figured out sooner, but we hope to make up for past mistakes. This is approaching completion, and once we have a rules set for each category we hope to confer with members of the community as to their opinions on it.

The third is just generally what more categories we can add, and here we especially want community input. If Aries can clarify his issues with the categories, that would be great help, and anyone else of course.

Again, we cannot apologize enough, but we want to make up for our failings and create a good leaderboard for this game.
