Hello All,

7H3 has recently been banned for systematically stealing other's content and passing it off as their own. I personally do not know whether the runs submitted here are stolen or original content, as I was unable to find any other speedruns mirroring what was submitted by 7H3, but given their rampant abuse of trust towards other racing communities, I cannot in good faith give them the benefit of the doubt. They have been permanently barred from submission.

The recent reminder on the SMB1 forum aptly applies to SMB2J as well. To copy the text of Tecate's forum post:

"Hi all,

Due to a rash of submissions lately that did not show a reset to the title screen prior to the run, we're posting this reminder to please show the reset to the title screen in your run submissions. If there is no reset to the title screen, we'll simply reject the run with a note to re-submit with the reset to the title screen shown.

This is just one of many mechanisms and rules we have in place to make sure all runs are valid.

Thanks!"

Hey,

If you don't know me, I'm a mod of Mario's Early Years: Preschool Frun. I made an educational Mario game speedrunning discord (since I doubt a discord could become active based on this game alone).

Invite can be found here (or in the sidebar of the game): https://discord.gg/KdQZFUc

I know the community isn't super active currently, but this can be a good place to discuss things in a matter that they are actually dealt with (forums on SRC are often a bad medium of discussion). Sorry if this seems spammy/self-promoting, I'm not trying to make it seem that way.

I'm not trying to single out specific people with this post, just trying to generate discussion.

I want to propose banning the use of SNES Mouse Emulation across all categories/games in the Mario's Early Years series. The reason for this is that while the SNES mouse's tracking speed/sensitivity is non-adjustable on the console, using an emulator with mouse tracking will allow for a runner to adjust the sensitivity of the mouse in a way that console players are unable to compete.

There is already precedent in banning emulators for games ran on a SNES mouse. If you look at the submission process for Mario Paint (Gnat Attack being the mode that uses the SNES mouse), emulators are banned for submission, presumably over the same issue: https://www.speedrun.com/Mario_Paint/editrun#Gnat_Attack_1_Loop

I'm not saying we ban emulators entirely, since the game can be completed using the standard D-Pad as well as the SNES Mouse with each being extremely easy to identify. I just don't think emulator should be given an unfair advantage, one that can literally never be matched on console. Correct me if I'm wrong on the latter though.

The NES leaderboards starts when you click Push Start on Round 1 and ends when it says Round Clear on the appropriate round.

We currently use the Game Select screen exit and the last block disappearing respectively. Do we see a benefit to syncing up these timing methods?

On speedrun.com and on the <ario discord, there is interest in adding All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. to the Super Mario series (http://www.speedrun.com/mario) as you can see here: http://www.speedrun.com/annsmb/thread/c8kca

On discord, we've talked about how this can happen, but it doesn't seem like anyone knows the moderators for the series, and upon inspection with the API, it gives kinda weird results. http://www.speedrun.com/api/v1/series/rv7emz49

It has an empty moderator set and no creation date, as opposed to most results in the API which have those populated. My assumption is that due to the popularity and how prolific the series is, it was manually created very early on in the site's history by an admin and lacks certain properties most series have.

I guess what I'm asking is threefold: Is what I said above true? If so, can we have All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros added to the series? Also, can a moderator be added so this doesn't have to happen again.

I wasn't sure if I should have added this to the leaderboard moderation request thread. I didn't because it was a bit more nuanced than just accepting runs. Sorry if I was incorrect in that.

New to this game, none of the categories mention rules. I assume they are relatively straightforward based on the category names, but I just wanted to make sure.

Also, any reason why All Levels is used instead of 100%?

Hello,

Is there anywhere to post runs of the golf minigame runs in SMB? That's about all I have to ask.

Hello,

I recently made minor changes to the styling (plan on doing a lot more) and I just wanted some feedback. This post will be edited when I do more with the site, but I would like feedback on the following changes: (I have included links to the image resources within this document as embedded BBCode)

Favicon - This should be simple enough, it is just a high quality image of our favorite ball. I think it accurately captures the spirit of the game.

Trophies (Bronze , Silver, Gold) - If you don't know what these are, I'll be a bit disappointed. Think of the Japanese cover. I'm very happy with these.

Site Logo - This one might be hard to picture, but I got access to the game's resources and found the font used throughout the game. I originally made the logo using all the colors available (click here) but I found it to be an eyesore, so I stuck with the black and white font to be most similar to the actual speedrun.com logo. I also experimented with a drop shadow and decided I didn't like it (click here). If you are interested in the other colors, I have an image of the in game font (click here). Here are some examples (Exhibit A, Exhibit B) of the font at work in the actual game.

That's it for now, all feedback is welcome!

There is another thread on including an All courses category, but I'll talk about that in a second.

The categories for this game seem a bit out of whack. The game and speedruns that I've seen tend to focus on completing planes (besides a single TAS of the first plane training mode) and the categories might be better off reflecting this.

To clarify, each plane, or mode in the US version, is separated into four sections: training, beginner, expert, and special. In completing all four of these, you advance to the next plane or mode with its own four separate races. In the Japanese version these are just First, Second, Third, and Fourth Plane. In the US Version these are Beginner Mode, Expert Mode, Master Mode, and Special Mode. While each mode's courses have their own levels as part of them, it almost makes sense to think of each course as an IL of each plane. The amount of levels in all the planes total to 100 individual maps. The fact that there are 4 Training, Beginner, Expert, and Special Courses makes the current categories a bit confusing as well.

With the idea of using planes instead of courses, it might make sense to include an all planes/courses category. The issue with this is that the code/high score input screen is super wonky and a separate skill in itself to enter things quickly. I personally think the best way to circumvent this is to use the level select code and start from level 00. Doing this would allow for users to do each course individually, showing all animations, with the ability to move on to the next course seamlessly after completing each course as completing a final level of a course brings you back to the level select screen. I saw this was recently added, so it seems some progress in categories has been made.

Final things I've noticed: The first, I have no idea why "gravity mode" is included as a category. The gravity cheat allows you to choose from 9 different gravity options, one for each planet. The category seems really arbitrary as it doesn't specify which gravity to set it to, which makes each run not comparable to the next. I don't see why this needs to be a category.

I also don't know why runs are supposed to include in-game time. Is this supposed to be the time left at the end of the level or the time using the level time code? I think it is unnecessary as the vast majority of speedruns rely on real time vs in-game time. I'm not sure about the rule to include the code in the first place. It seems really unnecesary as there are perfectly good tools (e.g. livesplit) to refer to time completing each category.

In reference to emulators, I think it is obvious in every run states are not allowed. It probably doesn't have to be included in the category description. Why is Snes9x banned by the way? It is allowed for popular speedrun games such as SMW and don't see why it would be bad for this game. Just curious.

I'm not trying to bash on everything you've done. The fact that there are runners of this game is great enough. I just want to make it better and I feel like these changes make the most sense. Please let me know if you want me to expand on anything.
