Hello, simple question, what settings can I use in Duckstation to make the game load faster and still be a legal run? I've watched other runs on emu and I can see people loading instantly into races, whereas I wait what seems to be the regular PS1 load times.

Thank you!

No need for a stopwatch, there are ways to capture your phone as a video source in OBS, so if you have a computer, you can theoretically set up a scene with a livesplit overlay on top of your cellphone broadcasting video to your OBS directly, removing the need to put in a stopwatch in your cellphone's canvas and potentially putting more focus on the game itself.

As for recording video that way, video rules are to my knowledge not super strict for this game, to the point where I'm not sure a video is even required for lower-end times (Some restrictions were put in place after bogus runs were submitted a few years ago, but I think video rules are still fairly lenient). I'm no mod but I have a gut feeling that if the recording is clear enough, it should be passable for submission. I suggest if you go into the higher end of the leaderboard to get a capture card eventually, but for beginning runs this will probably be fine.

Greetings! Simply want to let mods know that the 2-player leaderboards isn't correctly setup, as it only allows inputting the name of one player.

Have a good one!

My PB in glitchless is just under 13 minutes on N64 (It was 12:5x but can't remember the exact time). I think the best on N64 achievable is 11 minutes and some seconds. That means if done optimally and as fast as possible and you get the best RNG for some minigames, two blueprints is a safespot, as the base time is 10 minutes. I'm not sure if sub 11 is possible on N64, but it definitely is on Wii U.

Hello there! Sorry for the late response, I don't visit SRC all that much nowadays.

Some of us has ran all classes, and I must say in my experience, both Cleric and Fighter are both quite close to each other in terms of speed when played expertly, but I'd be willing to put my 2 cents on Fighter as an all-around better choice for starting. He's much easier to maneuver than cleric, and you don't really want to use blocking in a speedrunning context, dodging attacks is faster, and many enemies can be cheesed by jumping above their hitboxes but still being able to hit them, a thing the Cleric does poorly.

On the other hand, the magic attack power is certainly better on the Cleric's side, which can take care of certain sections much faster, but given the fact that magic is limited, I'd suggest getting acquainted with the game on a speedrun basis as much as possible to know when magic is the most useful to maximize efficiency of your spells during a run.

Overall, both classes are about equal when played to it's maximum efficiency, but Fighter is much easier to pick up in a SR environment than the Cleric. I would recommend starting with the Fighter, and when you feel like you've optimized your run as a fighter as much as possible to your tastes, try out Cleric and see how it works for you with the improved spell power but limited movement.

If I recall correctly, using an ED64 for DK64 is disallowed and only the official VC release or original cartridges are allowed, and I'm pretty sure any GS code that removes AA (or deblurs) is definitely banned, as this most likely affects performance in the game. IIRC, some games with AA disabled has less lag, which gives a clear advantage, especially in a speedrunning environnment.

I'd wait for an official answer from mods for confirmation of this, naturally, but one thing is sure; Forget GS codes.

After the evidence gathered in the past week, I would be all in for allowing BSNES and anything that uses a recent BSNES core, as it has proven that even under heavy lag scenarios, BSNES handles King of Dragons very well and is quite close enough to hardware, and since King of Dragons is not a game that would be drastically impacted from the little difference there is between hardware and BSNES, and sub-28 times are very hard to achieve, I do not see how not allowing this emulator would negatively affect the leaderboards or the legitimacy of runs.

Naturally, I would like to say that I think emulator runs need to be clearly identified, and I'd personally prefer the whole window of the emu to be displayed, should this become a reality in the future.

Wow! You guys have been keeping busy, great work on the new discoveries! I never thought the time would be remotely close to sub 30 back when I ran actively, I'm gonna have to get back on board at one point.

There is a fair large amount of fun categories that are not available here on the SRC page that some people run. Here is the list ;

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EH_153kUe3PdgF3dDko8nYKn4vnuGH3GkQXKZ-vPvbc/

If you wish to sumbit to those leaderboards, you must first join the Discord and post your times there, as this is how the records get written in.

You shouldn't feel as a burden, most speedrunning communities are extremely welcoming to new players, and DK64's no exception.

I myself when I started running this game was doing exclusively 101% glitchless runs, but that was at an era where speedrunning was critically underdocumented and all there was available was one segmented run on Speeddemosarchives. Naturally I would advise against it because 101% glitchless takes an entire day, I think I'm the only one insane enough to still do that shit once a year. I guess Any% glitchless would be a good way to start learning basic movement, then work your way up to more challenging categories if you feel like you'd end up enjoying learning advanced techniques.

Best of luck

Greetings! This is a small heads up for those who are unsure which category to post their run in. As you've noticed, there are several categories for this game which all look the same. Thing is, there are three versions of King of Dragons, and all three have big differences in terms of gameplay and speed, hence why there are so many different leaderboards.

The original leaderboard was for the Super Nintendo port, which is the most popular version, but since, the Arcade Rev. 1 leaderboard was added, and just recently the newer console versions, such as the Switch/PSP/PS2 version.

The Arcade rev. 1 leaderboard is for the first MAME version which was released exclusively on arcade (910711 WORLD). This version (used to be) the fastest due to many differences to the health and number of enemies.

The Arcade rev. 2 leaderboard is for the second MAME version (910805 OR 910910 WORLD), the Switch, PC, XBox, PSP, PS2 and PS4 version available in Capcom bundles. Those are all based on the same ROM, which was the final revision of the arcade cabinet.

The Any% leaderboard is for the Super Nintendo version, which is based off revision 2 of the Arcade version with several differences to accomodate the SNES hardware. It is the slowest version, but also the most popular to run. Specific emulators are allowed, namely BSNES, Bizhawk running a BSNES core and Higan.

Make sure to post in the right category depending on which system or arcade version you are running this!

Absolutely! I've done all runs on M.A.M.E. and since the original machine is insanely uncommon due to the suicide batteries killing the machines, it would be pretty much nearly impossible to run on real hardware. Make sure you are using 910711 World (Not 910805) and that you show dip switch settings at the beginning/end of a run. Settings should be default, although free play may be enabled.

Welcome aboard! Feel free to check out some tips I've put on the Discord's #arcade section if you wish.

If we go by the rules of other Arcade games being ran, it seems that all speedruns are done on free play/9 credits. I've checked Sunset Riders, Knights of the Round, Tower of Doom and Captain Commando and they all use max credits. At this point, I think we should use the same ruleset since it seems to be a common occurrence.

The rules should also specifically state that; -Dip switch settings must be shown at the beginning/end of a run -Turbo and auto-fire are not allowed

Sorry for the double-post, but just a bit of development as I feel this deserves a new post rather than an edit. I have created a video comparing both arcade revisions in terms of gameplay and speed. I specify at the beginning of the video what the major differences are, then I go on about doing two speedruns of Rev. 1 and Rev. 2 respectively. Hopefully this will help the moderators choose which revision we should allow.

(If you read this post and it isn't been an hour since the post's creation, there's a chance that the video is not up yet as it's still uploading. I had to write this post in a hurry before leaving the PC but wanted to make sure it went out before I left. Should be available by 3:20PM EST)

I second that. As for drop seeds, I believe they are identical, but this definitely needs more experimentation/documentation.

QuébecNaramgamjan6 years ago

Greetings! Since the original cabinet/board is exceedingly uncommon (Not to mention most have had their suicide battery go off already), and the MAME version is pretty stable, apart from a few sound issues and sprite tearing, I believe MAME and bootlegs should be allowed, as it seems that the speed emulation is on point.

Even TwinGalaxies allow MAME KoD for their high score submissions, so I believe this to be a good solution. The ROM used should be World 910711.

I agree that the dip switches should be default, that would be the best of worlds, but the question I am most concerned with is how are we to calculate credits?

1cc runs are probably too extreme, albeit quite possible when familiar with the game enough, but free play would make it too easy as anyone could just spam casts as the wizard until the end. This might need a little brainstorming.

The timing rules should remain the same indeed, I believe they work favorably well.

EDIT : As for co-op, should we have 2p or 3p, or both?

QuébecNaramgamjan6 years ago

I second that, I also love playing through the arcade version and it offers quite a different challenge depending on the difficulty set by dip switches and would be pretty fun to run as well.

Basic settings should be thoroughly provided if this does go through.

QuébecNaramgamjan6 years ago

Nice find! I'd be curious to see if the corruption also happens on the arcade version. (Unlikely, but I might give it a shot.)

QuébecNaramgamjan6 years ago

Howdy! Quick question, I was just wondering if there was any difficulty requirements for a run to be valid. Thanks!

EDIT : Asked Bawkbasoup directly on the stream, the answer is Normal Difficulty for those who may be wondering.
