Quick suggestion: allow mods to edit the names of the "Time with/without loads" columns for clarity.

I'm a moderator of New Super Mario Bros., and we have a timing system that uses the two columns but isn't explained well by the names of the two columns, and "In-Game Time" isn't a good name either. Many games are fine with the names of the timing columns, but I would be willing to bet that we are not the only community that could make things much more clear to new members by changing the column names.

Thanks, -MyLittleWalrus

But remember, just because it's not listed on this website doesn't mean you can't do runs of them yourself!

We used to have them, but they were unpopular and arbitrarily defined. They are a good way to practice though, so by all means if you want to practice a world/segment of a category, go for it!

DeSmuME is listed as the DS emulator on the OpenEmu website, and that is the emulator we require. I'd allow OpenEmu

Thank you for adding that feature to the WR History Charts! I still think there are more features that could (somewhat easily?) be added, as I mentioned in this post in the feedback thread: https://www.speedrun.com/the_site/thread/g79jt/69#4ljq8

Also, the "filter by date" feature is awesome, thanks.

The other reason besides lack of popularity was how arbitrary they were.

Idea from fishmcmuffins: require 2-factor authentication for all accounts that moderate at least one game. Today is what- the fifth time accounts have been hacked? Simply requiring password resets each time it happens clearly isn't enough.

Looks like you guys were just discussing milliseconds, but my friend and I were talking about this too, so I guess I'll add my input as well: I think each run should have the option of showing milliseconds instead of the whole leaderboard having that one option.

I'm the head moderator for New Super Mario Bros., and we have it so all runs under 24 minutes are retimed to the frame; the rest are only down to the second. If one of the sub-24 runs happened to land exactly on a second, it won't show up as XX:XX.000, it will show XX:XX. This isn't a huge problem, of course, but I personally think it looks awful and unprofessional to have one run without milliseconds surrounded by runs with them.

This could be fixed by having an option on each run of showing milliseconds instead of having that option be applied to the entire leaderboard, as I said before. I'm not experienced with large databases, but this seems like it would be very easy to implement: add a new field for milliseconds to every run, keep every run with non-zero decimals as a milliseconds run, and make the rest down to the second. The cases where a run actually landed exactly on the second would have to be manually changed and populated with 000ms.

Thanks for the consideration.

Alternatively you can press the direction opposite of your movement twice to come to a complete stop immediately instead of sliding to a stop.

I don't see a link to it anywhere on speedrun.com, could you link it for me?

If anyone can find ways to speed up the time between switching levels, that would be greatly appreciated. Also, I can put together a guide for how to set the codes up if anyone wants.

Not sure if anyone has brought up the possibility of this before, but I found a way to practice any level I want using Gecko codes and homebrew. It takes 80-90 seconds to switch the level, which isn't great but not unbearable. Ignore the bad gameplay by the way.

I think the WR history graphs at the bottom of the Statistics page for each game could use some work.

First suggestion: allow the user to select one line instead of displaying all of them by default and making the user deselect every line that isn't the one they wanted. I mean, this is a bit ridiculous: https://i.imgur.com/kEdTEyf.png Maybe there could be a checklist of each category, and when you click on one it expands and shows the subcategories (if there are any).

Second suggestion: allow the user to zoom in on and/or crop the graph. This is a problem especially for new popular games, the graphs of which have many, many data points bunched together. Zooming in would make it much easier for the user to distinguish the WRs of when new popular games have their burst of activity at the beginning.

Third suggestion: allow the user to click on a data point and be taken to that run's page. There are many times I want to watch an old WR and have to go back to the leaderboard, select "show obsolete runs", and sort through until I find the run I'm looking for.

Note that I'm not a designer nor do I know much about webdev, so these might be bad suggestions.

The other mods of New Super Mario Bros. and I are writing a comprehensive guide to RNG Manipulation in NSMB, and we are almost done. I would like to post this under the Guides section of our leaderboard: https://www.speedrun.com/nsmbds/guides

We are working on the guide in Google Docs, so we have different-sized text, bolded/italicized/underlined text, hyperlinks, and so on. I could not find information about how to do formatting like that on this website.

Here is an example of the formatting in a Guide: https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/guide/jdxw8

How would I format my guide as shown in the guide linked above?

Thanks, MyLittleWalrus

Just something to add onto this:

Determining the final frame based on Bowser Jr. only works if the run does bowser jump, or otherwise doesn't kill BJ. The actual final frame is a specific frame of the big red button being pressed down; we just use BJ's animation state because it is easier to pinpoint (especially with lower-quality video), and most runs that need to be retimed to the frame will have done bowser jump anyway.

The following is my setup for Any%. I use an original model DS.

  1. set DS to 1/1/2000 at 00:00
  2. after pressing A to confirm the time as 00:00, immediately reset (press power button twice)
  3. watch the analog clock on the top screen. Exactly when the second hand hits 9 seconds, press A to start NSMB
  4. watch the little toads running around in the background near the castle. Their movements are RNG, so they will move in the same pattern when you do the setup right
  5. play through 1-1, performing EXACTLY 4 double jumps. Not 3, not 5. Also, triple jumps don't affect it; only double jumps

I made this video showing my Any% RNG manipulation setup for reference. Pay attention to the toad patterns in the cutscene:

It's slower by about 8%. Like Tedder said, you can let go of the run button, then re-press it while in midair to get back up to top speed; this is called "unmorphing". You will also see top players bouncing off enemies and doing double and triple jumps in the shell, which have the same effect as unmorphing. The double and triple jumps with the shell have a 1/30 second window to pull off, but you can get them very consistently with practice.
