EFFECTIVE 8/2/2024
MiSTer has been proven to handle the 7-1 wrong warp in SMB3, therefore we will allow it for the Credits Warps categories.
SGB1 is now allowed for Marifteen Minute. SGB1 runs at a faster clockspeed than the original Gameboy and SGB2 (which both run at the same clockspeed), and for a long time MCMG runs did not convert SGB1 times. Given that we now do convert SGB1 times for MCMG speedruns, we do not think there would be an issue allowing it for Marifteen Minute. Especially since it is already allowed for Decathlon and SML1+SML2.
EFFECTIVE 7/17/2024
MiSTer is allowed for all categories except credits warps. There are concerns regarding the accuracy of MiSTer during the execution of SMB3 7-1 wrong warp, so it will be banned in credits warps until further notice.
We will also be adding a rule regarding game audio. It is strongly advised to include game audio in your submissions. Not that this has been an issue in the past, we never had a rule on it and wanted to add one for clarification purposes. No audio does not mean auto reject but can result in it if a run with no audio seems too suspicious.

Hello everyone! This forum thread will be used to announce new rule changes to the MCMG leaderboard.
The first new rule change for this thread is that the "Alt Fast" timer in Vs. SMB is no longer allowed, effective 12/15/2023. "Alt Fast" has been allowed and used in Decathlon speedruns for years, however due to it not being native to the official version of Vs. SMB (which poses an automatic advantage over the actual version of the game), we have come to the conclusion to ban it. Please keep this in mind when doing future Decathlon/SMB1 Engine speedruns.
Thank you for reading, and happy speedrunning!
~ MCMG Moderation Team
Hello everyone. The MCMG Moderation Team would like to announce a few new rules that have been discussed this past week.
-
FCEUX IS NO LONGER ALLOWED: Since SMB1/SMB2J have already banned FCEUX, and word that the SMB3 community might ban it as well (due to recent discoveries of it having accuracy issues), we feel that it is only appropriate to ban it here as well.
-
PEOPLE WHO REQUEST CATEGORIES MUST HAVE VIDEO PROOF: If you would like to request a category, you must link a member of the mod team (or on the forums/discord if you prefer) a video to your run. We will not be considering category requests from now on if you can't provide a run of your own.
-
STANDALONE NES SMB1 VERSION IS ALLOWED FOR FAMICOM TRILOGY: Since the standalone Famicom version is essentially no different to the standalone NES version, we felt it would be necessary to allow the standalone NES version of SMB1 for Famicom Trilogy speedruns. However- SMB1/Duck Hunt and World Class Track Meet carts are not allowed.
-
SMB USA (JP SMB2U) IS ALLOWED FOR NES TRILOGY: With the Famicom and NES versions of SMB2U being pretty much identical, the Mod Team has agreed to allow the Famicom version for NES Trilogy speedruns!
-
FAMICOM VERSION OF SMB1 IS ALLOWED FOR NES TRILOGY: For the same reasons as Rule #3, we will be allowing the standalone Famicom version of SMB1 for NES Trilogy. We will not be allowing the FDS version of SMB1.
These rules are effective October 7, 2023. If you have any questions, you can reach out here or in the Community Discord!

Yea I was clicking on stuff outside the SMB3 page and it wasn't working either. Eventually after a while it fixed itself so all I can say is wait, or if it still doesn't work soon then just send something to SRC staff.
We have agreed to add the category to the leaderboard. However we won't be including SMB Special since it was officially released on the PC, and the original version of the game varies a lot from the NES ROM hack that we all know. We also don't want to include the NES ROM hack since it could open the doors for other "unofficial" releases of games to be included. And also, the original version of SMB Special was not particularly built on the same engine as the other four games (you can check out a playthrough online).
The category will only consist of: SMB1, SMB2J, Vs. SMB, ANNSMB.
I don't see why not. It doesn't seem very different to the original game. I'll add it as its own subcategory.
It's an hour and a half long category, if we wanted ms to be included in the final submission times then we would have already discussed that, and done a framecount ourselves.
Also, my run was recorded on a VCR (which has been proven to slow speedruns down), so technically my run is faster than Stewie's. My run is around 1:36:42 w/o loads if you look at my actual split times (which varies if you framecount the video). However we're just using my VCR video time since it's most certainly not fair to have my leaderboard run as a time that's not very obvious to point out/easy to calculate.
Also also, roopert has a run that's faster than both of our runs, I don't think he submitted it yet however I'm pretty sure he has a VOD of it on his Twitch channel.
You are not allowed to use the NES version of SMB2J.
From the Famicom Trilogy rules: ".nes files and nes repro cart are not allowed for SMB2J."
Hello everyone. Last week, a new moderation team has been made for the MCMG leaderboard, and since then the new moderators have made a collaborative effort to fix up the leaderboard and turn it into a more ideal place for people to submit their runs. This is going to be a rather lengthy post, so be prepared!
New Moderation Team: @Mars02 , @stewie_cartman , @Kosmic , @EthanRTA , @SuperMegaDav , @lackattack , @GTAce
- All categories will now be timed without loads!
This only affects Marihour and Credits Warps, since every other category already is timed without loads. We have also raised the game switching time cap from 25 seconds to 30 seconds (except for SMB2J which is 45 seconds due to the longer FDS bootup). This way people don't feel super rushed to boot up a new game to prevent losing too much time.
- Game Orders:
This is the current status of the game orders that the Moderation Team has chosen:
~ Famicom + NES Trilogy: Fixed order (1+2J/2U+3) We felt that given the title 'Trilogy', it would feel a little weird to have the games played at any order, and we felt that it wouldn't be as interesting.
~ Pentathlon: Free Order We believed that it would be much more fun to allow free game order for Pentathlon!
~ Decathlon: Free Order Nothing much to say for this one since Decathlon was already free order.
~ Marihour: Fixed Order (1, 2J, 2U, 3, W, 64) We didn't like the idea of allowing free game order for Marihour since it would change the category too much.
~ Credits Warps: Fixed Order Credits Warps was already in fixed order before.
- We are now allowing JP versions for Marihour:
A while ago, there was a lot of talk amongst community members about the Marihour rules, and the Moderation Team has agreed that it would be great to lift the 'US-Only' rule from the Marihour speedrun!
- New Categories: The Moderation Team came up with a couple categories to add onto the MCMG leaderboard. Most of these were on the leaderboard a long time ago, but were removed unexpectedly.
~ Quadrilogy: This category is essentially SMAS All Four Any%, but the original 8-Bit versions (SMB1, SMB2J, SMB2U & SMB3)! We decided that this category should have free game order.
~ SMB1+SMB2J (misc.): This category was on the leaderboard before but was removed. This category will have a fixed game order.
~ SML1+SML2 (misc.): This category was also on the leaderboard before being removed. This category will also have a fixed game order.
As of posting this, these changes have not been done yet on the leaderboard. You should see them take place over the next few days!
Please give the moderation team a big thank you for making these changes. A lot of time, effort and debate has been put into making these decisions.
Since this is meant to be an informative post rather than an open-ended discussion (and to prevent necroing), I will be locking this thread. If you have any questions, or would just like to hang out with other community members, I highly recommend you join the MCMG Community Discord Server: https://discord.gg/9VFYH9Aq2H
Thank you to everyone who has read this monster of a forum post!

I strongly agree with the phrase "We should improve our times by playing better, not rigging our setups better.".
I love consistency, so I can understand how the rules being both partly faithful to darb's version of marihour and also abandoning other aspects of darbian's original ruleset can be upsetting for some people.
When we were first transitioning from one single time on the leaderboards (FC+NES Trilogy, Pentathlon and Decathlon), to finding without load times (each game segment added up), we didn't change anything with marihour as we wanted to keep it as close to darb's original category as possible. I'm not sure if the other moderators knew that some rules already weren't lined up with what darbian had in the beginning (they may have not, I know I didn't) or not.
With that being said, I (personally) wouldn't mind seeing the marihour rules being changed in a way where it's more fair (JP version allowed, etc.), and so that it can be focused more on game segments (without loads) rather than the full run time. And I'd be okay to see that happen with the other remaining categories as well (credits warps).
Other moderators have most likely been notified about this topic. I'd love to see what everyone else thinks about this!
Would everyone be okay with an "arcade" category being re-added in case someone wants to do a run on the original arcade, but keep the emulator category as is?
I also think that since it is considered emulation, Arcade Archives should be submitted under emulator (let me know your thoughts :) ). I also added Nintendo Switch, PS5 and PS4 since it is playable under the Arcade Archives title on all those platforms.
I may have misread the initial post a little bit about adding arcade as a category, my bad.
After seeing more Java footage, I now feel as if it is somewhat of a different version in comparison to emulator runs. I'm okay with it being its own new category.
As far as arcade is concerned, I believe there should be a subcategory for arcade, as not only is it the first (and most "official") release of the game, but also people who may want to try a run on arcade might get confused if they notice that there's no arcade subcategory - what are everyone's thoughts on this?
Also I think emulator being its own subcategory is okay if people like that idea too.
