Hi, I was planning on running this game and noticed that there is a more than substantial difference in how the CPU plays depending on how you set up "Difficulty" and "Damage level" in the options, independently from the difficulty selected when starting a new game. Maybe the rules should include showing the option screen to make sure that you're not running the game on Hard mode but with the difficulty set to a 1 star, it kind of defeats the purpose of playing Hard mode otherwise.

Yes, it would look very bloated: there's already 5 different categories with respective sub-categories, which I personally think it's quite a bit for this game; adding 3 extra categories that will have anyway to be multiplied by 2 due to the regional difference is very honestly not something I'd be willing to consider for now. Besides, every "time race" mode or "time trial" mode, as far as I can recall, it's always represented a secondary game mode by default, so making the "round game" mode the main set of categories I think was the right choice to make when the leaderboard was created, and I think it would make sense to keep it this way. And honestly, I really do believe the individual levels leaderboard is the best way to display the "time race" mode runs: it's one click away from the main leaderboard, the general view displays the fastest runner for each level and there's still associated leaderboards for each difficulty.

Nope, just me messing around with sub-categories yesterday and forgetting to set things back as they were, thanks for pointing that out.

I might do that for 256R only for now, as I think it could be better to have two separate categories for 99R, and 4 sub-categories might make things less accessible overall, not to mention that I looked into it all morning today and it seems to be a fairly complicated process.

So, I just added two new categories for 256R, type A and type B, but I'd like to hear some feedback in regards to how to rearrange them all, as my initial thought was to group some categories into "misc" and avoid having an overcrowded leaderboard. What do you guys think? Do we keep everything as it is now, do we put everything BUT the two 99 Rounds categories under "misc", or do we leave 99 Rounds and 256 Rounds out and put 20 and 50 Rounds under "misc"?

No, 256R is the last one. Here's Yua's run for reference:

Hi guys, What do you all think about adding a 265 Rounds category to the leaderboard? For those who don't know, even though Wario's Woods is virtually an endless game, 256R is where the game can't go further, as if you beat 256R, the next round the game will send you to is going to be 256R again, and again, and again... For this reason we can kind of consider it to be the end of the game, and I've personally been toying with the idea of making the suggestion to create a 256R category and trying a "1R to 256R" run for a while, but it's a long one and quite the commitment, and I didn't want to potentially have a category with no runs submitted. The reason why I'm now suggesting to create a category for this run is that I found out just a few days ago that @YuaRyuc actually completed a 256R run, and I would love for it to have a place on the leaderboard, also in hope that more people would be inspired to give this madness a shot. Since Yua completed the 256R in Type-B mode, I would personally just add a 256R category for Type-B for now, and once a first Type-A 256R run is completed as well, we could add Type-A too. I know of course this would not be a popular category to run, but I know for sure that it would be a fun challenge for the runners who decide to commit to it, and since, on top of that, someone already managed to successfully accomplish it, it would only be fair to give it a proper display in my personal opinion. Let me know what you guys think!

Don't want to digress here, but definitely looking forward to verify your sub 5 run in the 20 Rounds categories since it's the easier and the least competitive according to you, David. But yeah, I think it looks good enough for now, and if in the future new categories are added, we can put the "non-full-game" categories under misc.

Ah it's totally fine, all suggestions are more than welcome. And thanks, it's a good idea for sure, so I'll try to rearrange things that way and see how we like it.

What do you guys think about putting the 20 Rounds and 50 Rounds categories under "miscellaneous" and leave the 99 Rounds categories at the forefront? Separating JPN from US means having 8 categories now and if we leave them all out it becomes a huge mess, so in my brain it makes more sense to grant more visibility to the categories that represent the equivalent of a "full game" category.

Yeah, now that more Japanese runners have started posting to the leaderboard, I've actually started to notice how they tend to use different strategies than everyone else, so what Doccano says makes a lot of sense. I'd like to give this a few more days to see if there are other runners that want to chime in, otherwise we'll just proceed with this next week.

ItalyKat_kunoichi3 years ago

I wouldn't mind the idea honestly, I'm just not sure of how punishing those differences can be as I don't really get an accurate perception of it just by watching; guess I should give it a try as well. But yeah, let's see what people think.

Three mods for this game are more than enough for now I think. If you've got any ideas or suggestions, feel free to share them here or in another post, so that other runners can eventually discuss about them.

ItalyKat_kunoichi3 years ago

Nope, they emulate NES consoles very accurately, so there's no difference in terms of speed.

ItalyKat_kunoichi3 years ago

No, it's not been absorbed, I don't even think there's a Wario's Woods section in the Puzzle General server, even though it's still a great place for puzzle games related stuff of course. The Wario's Woods Discord server wasn't serving any specific purpose since nobody ever really used it, so I'd rather keep any communication here for now.

ItalyKat_kunoichi3 years ago

Yes, emulators are allowed. I'd say the more reliable ones are FCEUX, Mesen and Nestopia, so if you can get one of those, you're good to go. :)

ItalyKat_kunoichi3 years ago

Nope, not at the moment.

ItalyKat_kunoichi3 years ago

Since nobody showed opposition, the change becomes effective as of today. A few runners might receive a notification in regards to the fact that their time on the leaderboard was updated, just a heads up.

ItalyKat_kunoichi3 years ago

Yeah, I see what you're saying, and yes, you always want to try and finish as close as possible to the exit to move from one round to the next one, but as far as categories based on partial completion go, I really don't think it should be required for you to run to the exit as fast as possible to get to the next round that you're not going to play anyway; your job should be done once the 20th or the 50th round of the game gets cleared, which again happens once the game tells you you've cleared that round, not when you exit it.
