For GCN, ideally get PAL, though the difference between PAL and USA is incredibly minor (German Language has a few oddities, that's it). Avoid JPN as this version lacks a relevant trick.

For Wii, ideally get USA 1.0 (check the versions for Wii, as there are two versions for the USA region). If not USA 1.0, either PAL or JPN will suffice (PAL is slightly more broken but the differences aren't that useful for runs, that we know of). Avoid USA 1.2 and KOR as these lack a relevant trick.

There are differences between the GCN versions and Wii versions as a whole. Most notably, GCN has Gale LJA and Wii does not. This is a significant factor and why the majority of runs seen are done on GCN versions of the game.

You can play a GCN disc on either a GCN or a Wii that has backwards compat. with GCN games (i.e. not a Wii Mini). Note the rules for homebrew. A Wii disc can be played on either a Wii or a Wii U running in Wii Mode. As with GCN, note the rules for homebrew.
