Noob Question about Timing

So I just got into speed runs (I know, I know) but we all have to start somewhere. How do you guys set up the side timers that trigger once a condition is met?

IE: You grab the recorder, the timer triggers and displays the differential.

Thanks folks. Long live NES.

Most people are using a program called LiveSplit, which you can download at livesplit.org The splits are activated manually in most cases, although there are some autosplitters for PC games or if you are running on emulator.

Yeah, what Caracarn said.

Once you have a split program (Livesplit, WSplit, etc.) you just create how many splits you want, and then when you reach that goal, you split by hitting your "split" key which can be configured in the program. I have mine set to "Spacebar" for example, so I can just split by hitting the spacebar on a keyboard.

I'd recommend downloading one and playing around with it for a while to get the hang of it, Livesplit is feature rich and very customizable.

Live timing is manual and strictly for show. Whenever the timing is in doubt it's actually timed using the video.

Thanks everyone!
