I've been under the assumption since I first got it today that it depends on getting very close to the pipe before performing the backwards jump. I went on a streak of getting it 6 times in a row, but overall I think I'm at 50% consistency. No wiggle unless I'm doing something subconsciously during the backwards jump.

Doing a small wiggle over the gap may help, but it'll be right on the line of a high 241/low 242.

This method doesn't require the precision necessary of the typical 8-2 blant that I see most sub 5 runners using. It'll net you a 242 on the end timer and save a frame rule over a high 240 or 241.

If you are already using 8-2 blant or tas 8-2 then disregard. But, if you are like me and trying to snag your first sub 5 minute run this method may be helpful. I haven't seen any other posts/videos on this specific strat, so sorry if this is redundant.

@Nebula_Composer I’m unaware of what % of a Twitch gift sub goes to the content creator, that’s why I also included the option to receive the bounty via Venmo. I’m also open to another form of payment if it’s easier for the runner.

I had recently seen some streams of wr attempts from players in the top 25. The bounty was just meant as a fun extra incentive for them and anyone else interested. I understand that it’ll take significant effort and respect your choice to not pursue it if you’d rather not at this time.

I’d like to ring in the new year in a special way for the SMB community. With that in mind, I’m placing a bounty on the NTSC Any% world record. Important details below:

From Jan 4th-10th: A bounty of $454.XX is available for the first person to achieve a new Any% WR.

If no person claims the bounty during the first week, it’ll be reduced by $100 for each subsequent week.

Jan 11th-17th: $354.XX Jan 18th-24th: $254.XX Jan 25th-31st: $154.XX (conclusion)

All attempts must be streamed live on Twitch. Stream title should include references to world record and the bounty to spread awareness to potential runners and viewers (Ex: “Any% WR Cash Bounty Attempts”). Run must be submitted and verified by the SMB moderation team at speedrun.com. Only the first person to have completed a new WR run will receive the bounty. Payout can be completed via Twitch gift subs or Venmo.

Presuming that you are grabbing power ups in 1-1 and 1-2, I think a 5:08 is a realistic time using fire starts. That’s aLao considering that you don’t attempt any particularly difficult time saves such as 8-2 blant or 8-4 walljump.

I’d suggest you watch Miniland’s 5:03 tutorial using safe starts. It removes pipe jumps and other tricky situations from your attempts. It’ll likely result in a 5:05 if you use his route except 8-4 walljump. Video can be found on YouTube: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tcNi8rLEc00
