Hi, I was wondering if it's possible to start a run by loading a savefile that saved before starting the first mission, allowing me to customize controls in-game. Asking this since you can customize controls only after starting a new game or loading an existing savefile, and the custom control scheme is saved directly into the savefile. I double checked that loading a savefile that saved before starting Mission 1 still triggers all the cutscenes and dialog boxes that are triggered with a fresh new savefile, so there is no time difference by doing so. Asking this because I prefer to invert the Yaw and Thrust buttons, and to invert the Pitch axis. Thanks!

Update about the Hardware/Emulator split:

Since having Emulator runs for PC and Dreamcast didn't make much sense for how many runs there were on the category, the Hardware/Emulator split for PC and Dreamcast runs have been reverted, leaving it only for runs done on the Arcade Platform.

This is an archive of Sega Rally 2 ghosts and leaderboards for the PC and Dreamcast version of the Japanese Leaderboards site "http://ir3d.netgamers.jp". I took the liberty to backup every Replay File and Leaderboard present in the site to have them at hand in a single .zip file. More infos are found in the Info.txt file in the main folder of the archive.

You can find the archive download on the Resources section of this sr.c page, or you can click on this link: https://www.speedrun.com/resourceasset/55p0g

If you want to visit the site itself, where you could also forward yourself Dreamcast replays with the Dream Passport, here's the link to the Sega Rally 2 section: http://ir3d.netgamers.jp/segarally2/index.html

(Please note that I still didn't figure out how to correctly forward yourself ghosts with the Dream Passport, and I'm not sure if it even works)

@vsMIC While it's true that the board doesn't have many active players around, I do believe that splitting each platform into its own category is the best course of action to give the chance to all the players to compete fairly with each other. Arcade for example has a lot of differences when you play on Real Hardware compared to Emulator, you just can't exactly replicate how the steering wheel, pedals, handbrake and gear shift of a real machine behave and feel with a custom racing sim setup, without considering you could play with a totally different input device on emulator, while on the Real Arcade you can't, unless you mod the cabinet, so it's totally fair to split between Hardware and Emulator in that case.

Arcade also has different physics from PC/Dreamcast, so the platform split is also reasonable. The only split that could be debated is the PC and Dreamcast one, because there's no proven difference between the two versions in terms of physics, but there are differences in the available cars you can use and loading times which affect the 10 Year Championship RTA, without considering the fact you can use any input device on PC compared to Dreamcast where you're only limited to official or third party controllers.

I don't think at this point I'll revert leaderboards back, maybe I could revert Hardware/Emulator for PC/Dreamcast because I can't see many people playing on PC emulators or Dreamcast emulators, and there aren't many differences in that case to justify the split, but that's about it really.

About the very old runs on the board, I did submit those myself, and those are all the runs that have some sort of video proof, being it a video online or a working replay. I still have to publish a lot of runs but I put that on hold for a while now, but consider that sr.c leaderboards are not even representative of the huge amount of runs that were listed on old Sega Rally 2 online leaderboards for PC and Dreamcast, for which we have text proof but no video proof for the majority of the runs.

To make things clearer I'll create a thread about those leaderboards and make it sticky so that it's clear that those exist as well.

Today, changes have been made to the leaderboards, in order to improve competition fairness and keep leaderboards future-proof.

First, Real Hardware and Emulator runs have been split into two separate categories. The main reason behind this choice is that Emulator runs can use any kind of input device which could give an unfair advantage over who plays on Real Hardware. This is mostly true for Arcade runs, but it could have an impact on the other platforms as well.

On a second note, it's still not 100% clear if all the emulators are accurate to their respective original platform, so the split has been done in order to avoid future issues regarding this matter.

Second, all platforms (Arcade, PC, Dreamcast) have been split into their own separate category. Arcade has been already split from PC/Dreamcast in the past, but now the last two have also been split, to reflect what old online leaderboards already did. It's still unclear if PC and Dreamcast have differences between each other for which one or the other is faster, but this way leaderboards are future-proof.

Lastly, rules have also been updated to be clearer for everyone.

@Camcorder Thanks for the explanation and for the update as well. About the matter (from what I understood) what you described kinda forces leaderboard mods of games with differences between platforms but that still have all the runs on a single leaderboard with a platform filter (Sega Rally Championship has different physics engine between Arcade and Home Console ports for example) to either take one of these paths in order to solve the issue:

  1. Divide platforms into subcategories (the most correct thing in this case, though it would also fragment the competition on the leaderboard)
  2. Enable the "platforms obsolete each other" toggle in the leaderboards settings (fixing the profile issue, but at the same time hiding slower runs done on different hardware, which would still be important to be shown due to possible platform differences in gameplay/physics/loading times/etc...)
  3. Leave the leaderboards like that and keep incorrect placing on the user profile page

In my opinion having runs done on different platforms on the same leaderboard shown as unranked is still fine for situations in which the leaderboard is not big enough to justify a platform category subdivision, where normally you would just use the filter in case you wanna look at a specific platform, and the profile page should follow this logic. It's of course a secondary matter because it only affects the profile page currently, but I wanted to provide my feedback regarding the issue anyway to provide a different point of view.

Either way thanks for your time explaining everything :)

Sorry to bring the topic back up, but for me the incorrect placing is still there, as seen here: https://i.imgur.com/0udBPQR.png https://i.imgur.com/XY9G6yg.png

I think the Profile Page calculates the total position also considering the runs that shouldn't count for the actual ranking, when it wasn't like this before. Is a fix in the works?

This is the theoretical best video footage available online of a full Championship run done on real arcade hardware. This is a segmented run, so it's not valid as a world record, but it's still very close to DKI's World Record of 3'57"35, despite having different splits, and despite being .02 faster.

Run Splits Desert: 0'56"06 Mountain: 1'00"63 Snowy: 0'56"68 Riviera: 1'03"96

World Record Splits (as listed here) Desert: 0'56"12 Mountain: 1'00"52 Snowy: 0'56"66 Riviera: 1'04"05

For the profile page, I think this is a great update. It adds useful informations for the runner which were not clearly shown before. For the Leaderboards page, I think the premises are good but I just don't like the tabs on the right for Game Stats, Latest News, Recent Runs, Recent Threads and Moderators. I think they occupy more space than needed and should be given the option to the used to completely disable them, to give more space to the board itself. The font is also a bit too small, I definitely preferred it with the old theme.

Although it's now clear that Assoluto is faster, I'd say it's still less consistent than Terrazi. Before switching to Terrazi I tried for a bit to go for Assoluto but I was definitely doing something wrong with drifts. This clearly shows Assoluto's strenght over Terrazi though. Thanks for sharing this, I might probably try myself to get consistent with Assoluto in the near future :)

Lazio, ItalyBrionac3 years ago

In case you record a full run with Assoluto on Duckstation, can you also use an Input Displayer? I would like to see how to consistently get tight short drifts with Drift cars.

Lazio, ItalyBrionac3 years ago

Problem with Assoluto is that it loses a lot more time on all the other tracks that are not Stage 3 compared to the possible timesave on these tracks. I'm not totally sure it's the fastest route, but I would be interested in seeing a full clean run with Assoluto.

I opened a Discord Server for all Sega Rally games, to have a common place for all the Sega Rally speedrunning communities.

The server still needs to be refined, but most of the stuff is already in place so you're free to join.

So, I had the chance to try out all Sega Rally 2 versions, being PC, Dreamcast and Arcade (both Emulator and Real Arcade).

After intensively playing PC/DC versions of the game, I tested out the Arcade Cabinet version of Sega Rally 2 through Supermodel 3 Emulator and on Real Hardware as well, and I found out some differences between AC and PC/DC:

  • Arcade Cabinet physics handle slightly different from PC/DC. The car is generally a bit more responsive than PC/DC versions, and jump physics are also generally more detailed and bumpy.
  • Arcade Cabinet's car hitboxes (as well as 3D models) are slightly different from PC/DC. AC 3D Models/Hitboxes are generally thinner, while PC/DC's are wider.
  • Track Layouts are slightly different between versions. An example of the track layout being different is Mountain, right before the hairpin: in the Arcade version, the dirt section continues up until the hairpin, while on PC/DC the dirt section gets replaced by a tarmac section after the turn before the hairpin. Another example is Riviera, specifically the last hairpin, where it's possible on Arcade to slide on it easier than on PC/DC. Timestamp for PC/DC: Timestamp for AC: Another example is Snowy, where the borders with piled snow are a bit tighter than PC/DC, and the hairpin turn is also easier to slide on Timestamp for PC/DC: Timestamp for AC:

Taking these facts into account, I was considering splitting the two versions into two subcategories for Arcade Championship and Arcade Practice tracks, being AC for Arcade Cabinet/Supermodel 3 runs, and PC/DC for PC and Dreamcast runs. To me, it seems reasonable, even if the times that could be achieved on both are similiar. Let me hear your opinion on this. The split would only be for Arcade to have a separate subcategory, PC and DC will stay unified.
