Are you talking about the standing still on tartarus floors? Shadows are only loaded when the main character is close enough to them. Splitting the party and just chilling at the spawn point lets party members freely search the floor and find the stairs. It's just as easy way to avoid shadows. I don't even know if it's actually faster.
