Any% Current Patch NMG Beginners Route

These are notes for the Any% NMG route on the current patch that adds a few safety measures that makes the route a bit more comfy:

Each of these additional strats are just offshoots of the regular route so you can add or skip them at your leisure and remove them when you are ready.

Downpatching guide

As of 23/07/21, important skips like Doorskip were patched out by the devs, meaning that in order to utilize these skips you will have to downpatch your game.

DOWNPATCHING GUIDE

1. Download DepotDownloader ( https://github.com/SteamRE/DepotDownloader/releases ) and put it in a folder somewhere

2. Install https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet/5.0/runtime

3. Open a command line (cmd, powershell, etc) and navigate to this directory. Tip: You can open a CMD in your current folder by clicking in the navigation bar, typing cmd and pressing enter

4. run the following command:
dotnet DepotDownloader.dll -app 894020 -depot 894021 -manifest 3903520359414341205 -username [your username] -password [your password]

After editing this command to fill in with username/password, there should not be any square brackets remaining

4.1. If you are told that the required dotnet version doesn't exist, follow the download link provided and install this dotnet version. Repeat the previous step
4.2. Enter your steam authenticator code (If needed)

5. Once the download is finished, navigate to depots/894021/7077547 and you should find the 1.0.0 version of the game. This version of the game can be launched separately from your current patch steam version

Speedrun beginners guide

This is a list of info that will hopefully answer questions beginners may have. It's primarily aimed at glitched categories.
Hopefully it's helpful :D  


## Controller vs kb

Controller is most likely better but not by that much; it lets you get better angles while walking and rolling around but from my calculations on average when just walking, keyboard is about 5.4% slower. While it is more when rolling is taken into account (too hard to calculate exactly) it's not like a huge amount. Kb can get angles while zooming anyways so only a problem at the start of the run. In return you get faster pauses and easier complex tricks so just go with what feels natural.
Both are competitive at the end of the day so if you prefer one over the other it’s fine in like almost 99% of cases

## General movement

The optimal way to do dagger zoomies is starting with a rollheavy one and then chaining heavy ones afterwards.
Arcs are used for most skips in the game and Zarcs make hard ones easier if you're willing to spend the time to learn them.

## Version differences
By far the biggest changes between the versions are:
1. In 1.0 the dagger heavy attack lunge is much further making zoomies faster and arcs longer.
2. 1.0 also has soul door skips allowing you to go through the crow doors at any point without freeing the crow souls.
So as for choosing which to run, it mostly boils down to the tradeoff between ava1 early in cp which is very heavily rng and ava3 early for 1.0 which has a tricky zoomie +1/2 arcs over a void making it prone to softlocks. Of course on top of this there's the fact that you have to downgrade but I would advise to focus on the big tradeoff detailed above.

(Side note from a 1.0 runner here, but 1.0 sounds scary with the softlock potential, however arcs can be learnt and made almost second nature with practice, making the early ava 3 skip far less intimidating, once arcs are learnt I would argue that the fights in game can actually be harder sometimes)

## Skips
Here are some easy to miss details and tips and such for skips in the run.

**Batskip**
You want to stand on the third step from the top to get up easier.

**Fake hook**
You should start a bit away from the edge as it's very hard from right at the edge unless you do the arc from a slash.
(With the sword and arcs they are far easier to perform when you are a moderate distance from any edge provided you are doing arcs with the heavy attack which is easier to learn then a regular slash attack arc, the timing is different than an arc with daggers which can be performed almost while on the tip of any edge)

**Potskip**
Getting onto the pot is a bit rng so don't worry if you don't get it that quickly.
There are many ways of getting onto the pot, the current best is w+a heavy  and roll from the other side.

**Ava1 early**
This version is only available on mouse and keyboard
Okay so new trick was discovered fairly recently that made this trick so bearable that I got it first time after only trying for 10 minutes, and I have literally never tried the trick before, on top of that its consistent the vid below shows what happens, but in essence, putting the cursor inside yourself causes a sort of jank that we call a "slope pull" basically meaning on any slopped surface your character will always be pulled to the top or at least as high as possible, so placing the cursor inside yourself performing a slash and rolling, after the roll pause and hold your mouse in a specific position to get the best angle, then after unpausing they hold and charge heavy, now while the character is being "pulled" upwards at the highest point, you will automatically release the heavy slash, no input needed there, however right as you slash, pause then unpause and light slash as fast as possible to stop your momentum, otherwise you will fall over the edge, then just hold WA and heavy slash over the rail to get across, same principle for the second rail. Also quick note that if the "slope pull" isn't working for you, fall off the edge once and that should fix it, we aren't sure why that's the case but hey.

Now I'm going to keep the old method here for controller users as there are tips here that can be used for controller only users, just know that this trick is super hard on controller so keyboard is really recommended

Just know that this trick is like huge rng so don't get sad about not getting it.
(1.0 runner again, I have tried this trick myself and it really is difficult and frustrating so yeah don’t get irritated with this trick it takes a lot of time to get right)
**Soul door skips**
These are massive jank, just keep at it until the game lets you through.

Sword Combat Guide

This is a basic guide on effective Sword combat. For simplicity, combos and enemy breakpoints will be measured in "LA" which is Light Attack damage. At 0STR, 1 LA is 1 damage, but at 4STR, 1 LA is 1.8 damage.

# Attacks
The Sword has 4 attacks:

- Light - 1 damage in a small area in front of you.

- Heavy - 2 damage in a larger area in front of you.

- Charged Heavy - 3 damage in a very large area in front of you. Must be fully charged in order to do 3 damage. **Note: If you hit multiple enemies with this attack, only one will take 3 damage. The others will take 2.**

- Rollslash - 2 damage in a small straight line from where your roll lands.

# Scaling
**Strength**
Each STR upgrade increases your damage by 0.2, additively. For example, 2 STR upgrades gives you a 1.4 multiplier to each attack, resulting in 1.4, 2.8, 4.2, and 2.8 damage from base attacks. It also increases your range by 0.1 per upgrade. We will focus our upgrades in STR, as that is where they will be the most impactful.

**Dexterity**
Each DEX upgrade increases your attack speed by <>. We do not bother with Dex as it is not very effective in normal combat, only against bosses. We do get 1 point in DEX after Frog King, and another before Lord of Doors, as we have extra souls at those points.

# Combos
 - Heavy, Light, Light (HLL) -- This is the go-to sword combo for bosses and other large enemies. It does 4 LA per cycle, and with proper positioning can be spammed in most boss fights.

 - Rollslash, Light, Heavy -- This combo lets you open up a fight with 5 LA, which can quickly kill just about any small/medium enemy. It also chains well into the HLL combo as more enemies move toward you.

 - Light, Light, Light, Arrow -- This combo falls off the more STR you get, but early game it is basically on par with the HLL combo. You want to min-charge the Arrow, so you get one damage out while you are waiting for your sword cooldown to refresh.

At all times, make sure you are keeping track of how many light attacks you have used since your last heavy attack. If you use all 3 light attacks after a heavy, or 2 after a rollslash, you will have to wait a bit before your next combo. In some cases, like the end of a wave, or finishing a boss fight, this isn't a big deal. In others, it can lead to you taking unnecessary damage, or just losing time that could easily be avoided.

# Resources
**HP Breakpoints**
A good starting point is to learn the breakpoints of each enemy, at each point in the run. For example, when you are on your way to Guardian, Mages take 5 hits to kill - usually a Heavy, Light, Light, Light. By Watchtowers, we can kill them with a simple Heavy, Light combo. **Savestates**
Because of how much combat we have in the NMG routes, most of your timesave will come from improving combat efficiency.
