New Category I've Been Working on For 2 Years
2 years ago

Well this is a necropost, but here's that category I talked about some time ago. Life happens and whatnot.

Here's the category. It's hard. The rules are not set in stone, obviously, but it may prove too difficult in the current iteration.

96 Down, 1 Up

  1. All 96 Exits must be completed for a run to count.
  2. Once you have entered a level, you may only enter it again if that level has an alternate exit. Re-entry, if by accident, will result in a failed run regardless of the intent.
  3. In each stage, a 1 up must be obtained. The method by which this is done is of no scrutiny. Thus, glitches are allowed if they are helpful. Gain a single life by whatever means necessary.
  4. There must be ONLY 1 LIFE OBTAINED FROM EACH STAGE. Gaining more than a single life will result in a failed run except in the following case.
  5. Double or Nothing: If a runner loses a life during a stage, the run either ends right there, or, if they wish, they may reenter the level in which the life was lost one time only. This is their only chance at being able to pay back their "life debt" by gaining 2 lives rather than 1. If managed, the run continues, if not, the run is void.
  6. The gaining of life by coins obtained in an earlier stage is a viable option, ie, intentionally getting 99 coins in earlier lebels to make sure an upcoming level with little or no other options but to grab one of a few coins.

Before Continuing...

  1. I want to ask if modifying a rom to have only 1 life when starting a game is a good ideas or would be worth doing? I think so, as it makes the count of lives very easy to follow and just meshes well with the spirit of the idea.
  2. I'm aware this run is by definition, the only one that in which death is not a setback, or a place where a runner decides to quit on their own; It is instead almost certainly a game over or dead run if you lose a life. That is the nature of the idea.
  3. I didn't want to make it so hard of a concept, but I can't think of any other fair ways to gain the life back without essentially destroying the category in its essence. The only other option I have is the replay of a level in which you died twice, but comes with the cost of potential intentionally losing lives. Say in a level with an early cape and 1 up shroom, you take a death to gain a backup cape you otherwise would not have been able to get, placing you in an advantageous position for a future level.
  4. I'm not opposed in any way to this being modified and used as the players see fit. This is only the seed of an idea, and is useless in its own without players willing to participate.

I humbly submit this idea for the community to consider and offer suggestions. I have not successfully completed a run of this category yet without dying. That's partially why I've toyed with the idea so long. I've kept it long enough, but I will say, playing the game in this way has been a lot of fun and requires learning more about things you never would have cared about otherwise.

Oh and in current form, touching a moon is a death sentence, so definitely don't do that. Nervously awaiting the response....
