For a while now, I've been wondering if ILs (individual levels) could exist on the leaderboard. From the trailer, it doesn't seem like there is IGT to track it, but there is a race feature in the game that tracks your time. If you could race solo, I think that ILs would make a great addition to the leaderboard.

depends, because you have to wait for the race to start. from the trailer u can see that there's a 3 second countdown and that the race doesn't start from the begging of the level, instead it starts slightly ahead of the starting position.

True, that's the main problem of ILs in this game. It might be added a while after the game releases anyway

I think we should just use RTA, then get the actual time with video editing software or something

I don't think splicing would be much of a problem because of UI changes. However, I think it would be good to use RTA for ILs until if/when Nintendo adds an IGT

we're considering if/how to implement ILs, but I wouldn't expect a decision for a few weeks.

It seems like it could be a similar problem to Super Mario World since there is an ability to carry power ups, and some characters have different abilities, and it seems like some courses have multiple exits… there could be a massive amount of leaderboards due to the amount of variation possible for each course.

there could be different categories for bringing powerups vs not bringing a powerup and secret exit or not. Also all characters work the same except for yoshi and nabbit so they could have their own categories. it would be a lot,but definitely doable.

Good idea! So this is what I was thinking:

The main ILs could be Normal ILs, Itemless ILs, and 100% ILs like SM3DW. Ig there could also be secret exits and easy character ILs like NSMBUD/NSLU

Poland

Imo, it should go like this: (3 parameters)

Normal / Invincible Characters

Badges / Badgeless / Jet Run (since it plays wayyy differently)

Any% / 100%

I don't think items really matter here, since it's not an issue to prepare and then restart the level every time you lose the powerups

Not really, they play almost the exact same, and at that point ILs would have too many subcategories

I would like there to be multiple categories for the ILs but it would probably just have to be any% only because anything more might make the leaderboards too long. But also why is it taking them so long to put them up.

To be fair, they have to verify runs (prob about dozens in the queue rn) and they could've decided to not do ILs

One small thing is that I think they should use RTA unless they’re levels that specifically use IGT, such as Wiggler Races and KO Arenas.

To update some of ya'll on what we plan for the rules and how we'll layout the categories, this is what we have. Keep in mind, this is still a WIP:

General Rules:

Timing:

  • Timing starts when the loading circle has completely vanished. This is to help verifiers ensure all runs start at the same time since it can be rather challenging to see first input if the runner chooses not to hold a direction at the start for a specific reason.
  • Timing ends on the first frame of the screen turning black. We chose this instead of last last input because there are many types of endings (flagpole, royal seed, wonder seed, button press) and we want to standardize it across all levels. Bowser's Rage Stage timing ends on button press since there is no fade out.
  • IGT levels are an exception to these timing rules.

Restrictions:

  • Runs must be attempted on a completed level.

  • Multiplayer local coop is banned.

  • Resetting levels for the intention of changing the position of upcoming obstacles (pipe and wonder seeds) is banned.

  • Any run must start with a reset. This is to make sure start times are consistent across all levels since the animation when starting a level from the overworld is different from a reset, which can make it difficult to show exact starting times. Also, some levels have a notification at the start (i.e. badge challenges). IGT levels are an exception to this rule.

  • Any character is allowed. This will be categorized by an annotation/filter containing all the options.

  • Any badge is allowed, including badgeless. This will be categorized by an annotation/filter containing all the options.

  • Any items are allowed, including items within the item balloon. This will NOT be categorized by a filter, though this may change if people are inclined to have one. One option is something like "Items" with "Used" & "Not Used".

Any% Rules:

Objective: Beat the level as fast as possible.

Any% Subcategories:

Any% Secret Exit Rules:

Objective: Beat the level as fast as possible while reaching the secret exit.

Any% Fake Exit Rules:

Objective: Beat the level as fast as possible while reaching the fake exit.

100% Rules:

Objective: Beat the level while obtaining all wonder seeds, all three "10 coins", and the top of the flagpole at least once. If the level has a secret exit, you must play the level twice and reach both exits. Fake exits do not count towards the 100% completion of a level, therefore are not required.

Levels that are not included on the leaderboards:

  • The first Badge House

  • All poplin houses

  • Royal Seed Mansion

100% and All Badges Leaderboard Changes

Hello Wonder runners!

We have just concluded our poll in the SMBW Speedrunning Discord regarding the "All Badges" category, and it has been determined that the category will now be under the 100% subcategory "No Standees." This also means that true 100% runs will be found under "100% - Standees."
