Timing

Hey all,

Just dropping a quick FYI in regards to the rules for timing runs.

As per game rules, and this applies to all "round game" categories, timing starts upon selecting Round 1.

In the last year or so, we have been verifying an increasing number of runs that, to the greater extent, start the timer upon fade in, which has been forcing us to download and frame count every single run that was submitted like that. We have noticed some of you guys have introduced delays to your timers to maybe try and resolve the issue, but those have been inaccurate and ineffective as well to various degrees. If this happens to be the result of the use of an autosplitter, I would personally advise against the use of it, as it seems to be inconsistent and causing more issues than it solves.

In conclusion, I would like you guys to do a double check of the tools you are using for timing purposes so that we can all be on the same page as far as timing goes and make the verification process quicker and easier for everyone involved in process.

Hello! The old version of the autosplitter was accurate but required setting a 30-frame delay. I created a new version that starts after selecting the first level in the menu and doesn’t require setting time offsets, eliminating some confusion. I’ve uploaded the autosplitter to the "Resources" section.

I have a question regarding this, i've been off by 1 second on multiple of my runs. I do know now that we're supposed to wait for wario to appear in order to start...but also, i just retimed myself and other runs and unless I'm looking at it incorrectly, multiple of the top runs would be off by one second also. I show my controller pushes on screen and I believe (I'm not saying I'm 100% on anything) it should be 90 frames from when Toad first appears from when someone originally hit the A button to start. If that is the start and Wario is the finish, I do believe the top runs would be susceptible to the same thing I've done in my timings. Again -- Maybe I'm the one who is just wrong or inaccurate on something -- but from what I think I'm seeing, that would be the case.

Did you receive my answer to your message? if not, you accumulated several tenths of a second both at the start of the run and at the end of it that brought you over to the next second, which is inherently different than being off by 1 whole second: your timer would often start late and stop early. I do not remember encountering the same issue upon verifying "top runs", but if you tell me which ones you think should be retimed, I will look into those.

On the other hand, your last run is well timed, as the timer starts upon pressing A to select the round, and stops upon seeing Wario during the last cutscene. If this creates uncertainty, I will better specify it in the rules.

Honestly I think it’s all 5 above me. I’m not trying to be a smart Alec. It just depends on if I understand the start to be when we press A at the round selection.

I went and checked all five, they're all timed correctly.

Hmm. I guess I didn’t time the start correctly for them…
