The comment about not being able to replicatie without massive amount of work shouldn’t be a reason to have new categories to give new ppl a chance. If Ant or Yoranto decides to run those categories, will we make new ones again? Rhetorical question. Same practice is needed to run Super Mario Sunshine for example, reason why I quit running that game a while back.

Why don’t you make a challenge series in the forums pdub? Think that is fine.

Still, above reasons, like down__under's reasons, are understandable, but make no sense. Speedruns are about running the game as fast as possible. I do understand the times of Yoranto and Anthony can be a bit overwhelming, on the other hand, those are ppl who spent a lot of time in the game (and yes, you do have to spent a lot of time and effort into it). We discussed these things before (referring to "no shots fired"), like yoranto said, I do am in favor of ppl having more fun with things like these categories, but maybe they shouldn't be up on the boards, unless they make sense.

However, I do like a challengeseries very much. Maybe create a subseries just for fun? Call it something like Challenge on top of the boards and make subcategories. Which will let ppl know that they make no sense, but they are kinda there for just the fun of it.

I think the discussion we had 2-3 yrs ago is very much like we needed to develop a community and having a good set of basic rules an an understanding of the game (we were still learning so much back then!). Everything needs to develop (maybe now is a time for that) and if this attracts more runners, maybe we should give it a shot. We can always go back to the way before.

They are very memish, but if ppl have fun, let 'm have fun.

Can you jump that fence without the crates next to it? If not it won't be allowed in glitchless.

Netherlandsruudf897 years ago

Because it didn't seem worth it to have all difficulties in the categories. Easy mode will always be the fastest. There were still a few grounded runs, which we kept for the challenge.

Post by AnthonyCaliber OK so I've been doing this for a while but I don't think I ever confirmed it with the community. Is the push that the guy in the hallway gives you allowed in glitchless? (go to around 11:28 in the attached video to see). He doesn't always launch you across the hallway. There's no way to do that intentionally. It just sometimes happens. Most of the time it's a gentle nudge forward and then you don't get blocked later on by Tess. Getting past the guy isn't as easy as it looks and it's a nice time save. Also we already allow the "launching" after you exit a crouch in an enclosed space so I don't think it should be a glitch.

Also at around 1:33:32 I got this weird occurrence with Henry. He teleported through the stairs above me and opened the door saving around 7 or 8 seconds. I have no idea why or how it happened. If we find a way for this to happen all the time and trigger it intentionally, would it be allowed in glitchless? It might just be something as simple as getting a certain distance away from him or something with the camera angle.

Post by AnthonyCaliber This one's nice. Discovered by twitch user Soviet_Jedi. Similar to getting all your supplies back after a restart encounter in the high school, you get to keep all the supplies you used outside of the high school if you die via a bomb, while taking the last infected with you. It also places you right in front of the bus and gives you a free nail bomb if you toss one aside before you die. In my opinion it's a glitch, but damn do I wanna use this in one of my glitchless runs.

Mattmatt10111: Hmmm if you died and it respawned you i dont see a problem with it, but it seems like it just places you infront of the bus without you dying, kinda like what happens when you get killed in the robert cutscene, u die but pop straight back, and the same thing happens here so i think its a glitch purely for that fact, if you died and actually respawned you it would be fine by me, but you dont :/

_

Post by Soviet_Jedi These 3 jumps are in the gray area. You're not necessarily going out of bounds, but at the same time you're not playing this section of the game the way the devs intended you to. Thoughts?

Lek: Well I dont see the problem in using it. Its not OoB or glitch. It is just and over looked jump.

Soviet_Jedi: True - but the mods have banned trivial jumps in the past such as the cart skip right after completing the financial district fight. Turns out you don't even need the cart - you can just use the corner of the ledge and Ellie will spawn next to you once you trigger the next cutscene. Wanted to check with the community before trying it out in runs..

M_TTHEW: "23 Jump Street" was discussed some time ago. We all agreed that it wouldn't be allowed in Glitchless. However the mods should allow the other jump, as it seems you're not even going out of bounds at all.

ruudf89: 21 seems similar to 23 right? I guess you are just tapping X to get across that 'sort of invisible' wall. Both work the same? What's the proces of 22?

Soviet_Jedi: both 21 and 23 use the same pathway since there's an opening in that exact spot which lets you either to jump down from the 2nd floor by tapping X or Joel will fall down himself but that's a bit more finnicky and you lose a bit of health too. There's another possible way of doing it but again - you lose a bit of health. As for 22 - what you want to do is approach the same spot from which I made the jump except you want to crouch before you tap X to jump. When you're in the air, tap both X and O (don't know why O plays a role here, but it works for some reason)

Case and point:

ruudf89: Sorry if you were misinformed before, these jumps can't be allowed due to the ledge being an invisible wall of some kind. Check the guide for the latest updates

Post by Yoranto - Downtown strat this is mainly for Anthony (or more for the grounded speedrunners) but I don't know where I should send him a message so I create a thread :D

As you know we all have problems with the downtown fight (I saw you losing a run there and my last run also died there). There are 2 problems: 1st: After you kill the clicker you get grabbed 2nd: After you turned around there are 3 infected behind you

I think I have a solution for the 1st problem.

Look at my camera angle how I kill the clicker. When you kill the clicker with this camera angle, I think the other infected can't grab you because you are too far away. With the old camera angle Joel often goes too near to the infected while killing the clicker.

I'm not 100% sure, but for me it looks more consistent.

Post by Soviet_Jedi This route is consistent (no RNG whatsoever); safe (you won't take any damage); and doesn't require a molotov, but it does however require 2 arrows. Not much to explain here: botte or brick the first guy that enters the building and shoot the other guy with the bow. Then melee the guy you stunned but be careful that you don't step into the searchlight too early. If you bottle or brick the dude and go in for a final blow and he's not inside the building, you'll get spotted. Exit the building, follow the path I take in the video and kill the shotgun dude with the bow. You still haven't been spotted yet. Now there's 2 more guys above and in front of you. Once you kill either one of them, 4 more will spawn from the right side of the platform. Kill the guy on the right first (if you do it the other way around, the rifle guy will run and hide) and then aim to the left and kill the molotov guy (he won't move for a few seconds after you've killed the rifle guy which is why I do it in this order). Then just aim to the right and shoot the upcoming 4 dudes. Immediately after the last guy receives the final blow, restart encounter as it will place you in front of the gate.

Post by Soviet_Jedi Feels like I'm spamming new threads too much lately but I've been intentionally skipping everything the game offers you and if you skip picking up both the molotov and the revolver, you'll get both at the museum kinda like at the end of sewers with the shorty and molotov. Best part is the tutorial screen won't show up for the molotov. Only works in New Game runs, since you won't receive any screens when picking up new items on NG+ save files anyway. Update: turns out you WILL get the tutorial screen for swapping out weapons - it didnt give me one here since I don't even have the pistol.

Response by AnthonyCaliber]: Where's the pistol?

Response by Soviet_Jedi: I got rid of it @Cargo to see how the game would behave if you progressed without any firearms. So far the only thing I've discovered is if you perform the revolver trick and enter Bill's safehouse with 16 bullets, you potentially can use it up on infected and get rid of it before entering Pittsburgh - one of the bandits @The start of alone and forsaken will drop his revolver with 10 (it will say he dropped 1 bullet but if you pick it up, you'll have 10) Update: turns out you WILL get the tutorial screen for swapping out weapons - it didnt give me one here since I don't even have the pistol.

Post by Soviet_Jedi When you reach the carpush checkpoint, R.E. and shoot a bullet as Ellie is climbing into the car. When you activate the triangle prompt, Ellie will warn you of infected, which means you did it correctly. Could this be potentially used in a run? Also, If you shoot all 3 and exit the garage and run down the road, you will get floaty-out-of-bounds-T-shaped Joel.

Response by ruudf89: I'll run it by the mods. So... it's kind of a weird spot to trigger the infected. But it's still just using a gun and shooting. So it's all fine in any category.

Post by Yoranto: in the last days I tried out some new glitches and I found out that I can go OOB everywhere in the water where you can go in with stairs or sth like this (just don't jump into the water). But now we found out that Joel can go OOB everywhere, where he normally stops. Look at this video I think it's interesting. What do you think?

I found a new strat to go OOB. It works when you can crouch down to the water. It works on some places but until now it doesn't help much because on those places you can also go OOB with the pallets, but I just found this 2 days ago so we will test this. I'm not an expert on glitches etc. so we will see. The thing is that Joel runs automatically. While switching in the inventory I don't have to press L3 for walking, Joel does everything automatically I just switch in the inventory so I don't press some special buttons. This allows us to walk backwards but look forward (while turning the light on, which is weird because normally the light has an "auto-aim"-function). You can sprint while being in listening mode and the important thing for these OOB's is that you can crouch under the water instead of swimming directly.

Here are some OOBs I found with this glitch:

TheThrillness: You might be able to skip the Capitol Building with this although I have no idea if you can do it there. Like when you drop down from the dumpster, clip down into that water and then you can swim to the Bills' Town cutscene. Matt swam up from the ending area back to capitol so we know it's linked.

*Post by Yoranto[i] a few minutes ago I just found a small timesaver. It saves ~4sec. It's not the biggest find but 4 seconds are better than nothing, I think :P and maybe one day 4 seconds are relevant for a run. BTW I think there are some more small timesavers like this. If I find another one I will post it here in this thread, too.

I found a new one with Ellie in winter! It saves ~7 seconds. haha I can remember how often I died there because Ellie was too slow and they shot me :D

This here on Bus Depot saves ~4 seconds (3-4).

Here is another one. Saves ~5 seconds.

_

[i]Post by Yoranto* This happened to me in my practice. I think it's 100% random so there's almost no chance to replicate this for Any% runs (btw - would this be Any%? I mean, you 'just' die). If this would be consistent it would save around 10 seconds. Does somebody know other places where this could also work?

_

Post by AntohonyCaliber: Mattmatt10111 found this one. David still moves at his normal pace. We just push him out of the way first. Just wanna confirm this is allowed.

Mattmatt10111 response: Heres the new consistent way to do it, thoughts?

_

Post by Yoranto: Should this be allowed in glitchless? It's another "getting in front of"-trick. Okay this just saves 1 second and you're not really in front of Ellie, you're more IN Ellie.

Following posts are all by Soviet_Jedi Sup, guys! Found a way to drop any gun/throwable item in the game. Currently the only use I have found for this trick is at Bill's town, where you can later pick up the item you dropped, essentially duplicating any item you need (in the video I duplicate an extra molotov, so you end up with 3 instead of 2) but perhaps this trick can be used elsewhere too, since it has a tendency to interact with the game in weird ways (I made Tess go bald by dropping the 9mm gun and progressing to the next chapter). HOW TO: Ok, so first, you have to have a melee weapon (I think any will do, but it's easiest with the bat IMO) with 1 or 2 bars of use left. Equip the item you wish to drop (or highlight it at the very least) BEFORE you break the weapon and hit an enemy with it (the bat I mean in this case). When it breaks, immediately hit L2 (or L1) and before the reticle appears, hit R2 (or R1) and quickly cancel the animation with square. It does take some practise and some getting used to because you have to develop a feel for it, but it is very possible - anyone with a ps4 and a copy of TLoU can do it. If done correctly, you will drop the item you had previously equipped with however many bullets you had loaded in the chamber of the gun (If you have 13 revolver bullets fro example and you have 4 loaded into the gun, you will drop the revolver with 4 bullets). The same principle applies to dying before you respawn at Bill's town - in the video I have the shotgun equpiied with 4 bullets loaded in the chamber and I later come back to pick it up, essentially duplicating 3 items in total: the nail bomb, the molotov and the shotgun.

Getting passed Bill: I know MattMatt uses a molotov to stun Bill for a second and lock him in place (since friendly AI doesn't walk over fire) to get past him, which saves a few seconds but wastes a molotov; but I've found a slightly slower method that lets you get past Bill without using one (might be more useful on grounded runs). As far as I know nobody uses this trick which makes me believe nobody has found it yet until now... How to: There's 2 spots Bill will wait for you - the first checkpoint is at the top of the stairs (this is scripted - Bill will automatically start moving once you walk up the stairs) and the other checkpoint is right next to the doorway. If you walk towards Bill and jump over the ledge and wait a second (you have to time this right) Bill will do a 180° turn when he gets to the 2nd checkpoint and not move until you have caught up. As he's getting into position, you want to start running again and place yourself between Bill and the doorway - you don't need to mash any buttons, just hold down 'run' and try to aim running more towards Bill than the doorway - your objective is to get between the two. If done correctly, Bill will move to the side. This is somewhat RNG based since 95% of the time Bill will walk towards the 2nd checkpoint while other times he might jog a little. Ive had godlike RNG as well where Bill gets out of the way almost instanty when you start running again after having climbed over the ledge.

Get past glasses guy: Sup, my dudes. Found a way to get past glasses guy in the hallway every. single. time. (not entirely sure if this method has been discovered or used in the past but after watching a few veterans speedrun this game and fail this trick makes me believe people "wing it" instead of relying on a specific technique). Here's a 10 minute video of me getting past him without failing once. If you take a closer look, you'll notice glasses guy for whatever reason stops dead in his tracks for a second or two every time you take this exact path. The only way you can trigger this is by following him instead of trying to overtake him by following Tess. Notice how I stay in the left "lane" and step on the exact same tiles glasses guy steps on. Well.. it's not obligatory that you step on the same exact tiles he does - I stay 1 or 2 inches to the right and after I've turned right, I go back to my left lane. The best part about this strat is that glasses guy will make room for you so you don't have to worry about the fire extuinguisher blocking you from overtaking him.

_

After doing some research on other games such as Resident Evil that have random ammo drops and reading up on what speedrunners of said games have discovered I decided to test out if the same theories apply to TLoU. What I've discovered is that 1st of all - the system is in place to reduce ammo drops when you've more than enough - not to increase the drop rate when you have too little. 2nd: the game looks at your total ammo, not just the weapon that you have little to no ammo for (this includes pistol ammo). In this thread I'm going to use the high school fight as an example since on grounded it can halt runs to a screeching stop if you get bad RNG and end up with no extra shotgun ammo for carpush and/or the bloater fight.

Before I get to the meat and mashed potatoes of this "strat" let me first say that if you have 3 or more shotgun shells, the drop rate will always be 0%. I've never gotten a single shell with 3 already in my possession from a runner and I've spent the last 2 days grinding the same section over and over. The only way you can get an extra shell is if you shoot a runner, which will reduce your shotgun ammo from 3 to 2 but it may result in a drop.

If you're on a glitchless grounded run, you're going to have somewhere around 16 revolver bullets in this section. After doing this section non-stop for 2 days, I've discovered that if you conserve both your revolver ammo and shotgun ammo (meaning you only execute enemies with your bat/fists) the drop rate will be around 25%. This is because the game knows you have more than enough revolver bullets for this section and the system is encouraging you to use up revolver ammo, which explains the lack of shotgun ammo drops.

However, if you get rid of the revolver, your ammo modifier changes and because of that your drop rate increases from a mere 25% to 46.5% (50% is more plausible or maybe it's because I like round numbers more). This is because you no longer have any pistol ammo and all you have is your shotgun, which tricks the game into thinking you have practically no resources for this fight, so it forces the drop rate to go up. I've posted 3 videos below, all using the same approach:Ideally you want to kill the first 2 runners with the bat (this is so that you're left with 3 bars or less on the bat) and then have the bat break on the 3rd runner (doesn't matter which one - I prefer to use this path, you can come up with your own). After the bat breaks, wait ~0,5 seconds and press the aim button - don't spam it, instead - hold it. From this point on, your drop % will be increased (unless you pick back up the revolver). What's more interesting is that 80% of the time the same runner you executed after having dropped the revolver will drop 3 shotgun shells instead of the traditional 1. The other 19% of the time one of the last remaining runners will drop 3 shells.

I don't think this is a glitch since all you're doing is managing ammunition in your inventory, but that's just my opinion. You can achieve the same results by emptying all of your pistol ammo the traditional way. The weapon drop can happen by accident in both casual playthroughs and speedruns since the requirements are too trivial - if a melee weapon breaks you will naturally want to resort to using a firearm and all you have to do is hit aim and fire.

Some pro tips:

  1. Don't go into this section with 3 or more shotgun shells.
  2. Don't be afraid to use the shotgun if you have to before you get a chance to drop the revolver - I've posted 3 different videos of me using the same strat but a little bit differently each time - conserving ammo, using the shotgun before I break the bat etc.

Second post by Soviet_Jedi Ok so I have to apologise for misleading people and potentially having wasted people's time and sanity - turns out there's a much easier and simpler way of getting rid of the revolver. When I first discovered this phenomenon of being able to drop your weapon, I did it in an assenine way: Hit aim, square, aim, fire and then square again. Fuck that - here's how to do it:

#1: after the weapon breaks, do not stand still. Be walking forward, backwards, sideways - it doesn't matter but don't be stationary. #2: just hit aim. That's it. You have to time it tho. If you do it tok early or too late, Joel will simply aim with the weapon. You don't have to spam the aim button, you can just hold it. Here's a video of me doing it so you can see exactly what I press and when; hope it helps you out :/ ps: sorry ant

Response by Yoranto: You can also just throw a brick/bottle to stun the enemie, then kill him with melee weapon and while doing this just press the dpad to the right

Since the new update, apparently the glitch where your surroundings turn white and you walk up onto one of the latest area of this dlc is kind of not working.

I say kind of not working because AnthonyCaliber found a way to work. If you ever close down the game, it won't work anymore, you will fall through the floor. But, if you reinstall the game and don't close it, it will work. We don't know why or how, but it's a small bypass to get it working.

Have fun running!

Moved from main boards - Original post by Yoranto;

yo,

okay first of all I want to say that this is really hard to explain, even if I would speak english perfectly so sorry for this long text.

As you guys know, Anthony & me were doing lots of LB Any% Ps4 Easy runs in the last days and we reached a point now, where hundredths of seconds decide over a world record. The first split (Intro/Glitch) is one of the weirdest splits because you are doing the same thing over and over again, but due to different loading times of the items you get different times. Sometimes a 1:46, but a 1:43 is also possible. To be honest it could be that you get a 1:50 and if you do the same thing again you get a 1:43. This means that if you want to do a world record you have to reset until you get good loading times, which is absolutely.. yeah.

Today I (accidently) found out how to manipulate this so you just get 1:43-1:44 instead of 1:43-1:50 times.

Before I start explaining I want to say that I don't have proofs like a video or so, because you can't really show this in a video because your time also depends on your movement before the loading times and how fast you do the glitch, so just try it by yourself. Also I have to say that I'm playing Left Behind on the current version (I think 1.08?) and I have a normal Ps4 (I think the first one you could buy).

So, there are 3 different types of loading times.

When I started runs today, I realized that the first time you start Left Behind the loading time of the items is VERY slow. It was like 5+ seconds slower than in my PB (With perfect movement before, the items spawned in at 1:27, which is +5 or +6 compared to world record, even with perfect movement). Then I played a few hours and this never happened again. Then I went to dinner and after coming back, I restarted my Ps4 and on my first attempt I got a 1:27 bad loading time again. So this is the slowest method to run Left Behind. So this happens when you just started the application and you directly do the skip.

This is the way we did our PBs in the last days. We started the Ps4 and we played Left Behind until we got a new PB, that's it. The items load in at 1:21-1:23, this is why you hear Anthony saying "see the items loaded in at 1:21" in his world record run, because it seemed to be RNG and if you got bad loading times the world record was not possible.

Now today something weird happened to me...

I wanted to do a few attempts today and after playing 1-2 hours I realized, that I just got 1:20-1:21 loading times, sometimes I even got 1:19 loading times which is absolutely crazy fast. In the last days maybe you got a 1:44 first split 20 times out of 100 tries or so, but today I got 1:43 first split 20 times out of 100 tries and the other 80 attempts were 1:44's, so my slowest loading time today was as fast as the fastest loading time from the last days. When I realized that I was completely confused because I didn't know why I got fast loading times. As I said I went to dinner. I came back and restarted my Ps4, played again and... I just got bad loading times (1-3 seconds later spawns of items). Over and over again, just bad loading times. Then I was thinking so hard and then I realized one stupid thing. I did attempts for a few hours today (with good loading times) and because you reset a lot, I was watching videos and streams next to running LB. I remembered, that after a reset I accidently pressed on "Factions MP" instead of "Left Behind" in the main menu. This was the only thing I realized. As I said after restarting my Ps4 I just got bad loading times again and the Factions thing was the only difference I remembered from earlier today, so I went on Factions again, went back to the main menu and started a run and ... I always got good loading times again. Sorry for this long explanation but I didn't know how to explain this in another way. So you get the best loading times when your attempt is not the 1st attempt (so until the 2nd attempt you get good loading times) and when you pressed on Factions before that.

All in all there are 3 types.

  1. Slow loading: on your 1st attempt, directly after you started the ps4
  2. Normal loading: on your 2nd, 3rd, 4th.... attempt
  3. Fast loading: on your 2nd, 3rd, 4th... attempt, when you were in Factions before

I hope this is it. I hope this works for you, too. As I said I have the normal Playstation 4 and the TLoU disc version with the newest patch.

Now at the end I thought about different things: 1st: This would mean that soon a world record in Left Behind {Any%|Ps4} is not possible without having Ps+, because if you can't go on factions you get bad loadings and with bad loadings a record won't be possible. 2nd: What about the main game? Maybe the factions thing influences the glitches or the loadings in the main game, too.

It is quite consistent, I don't know exactly how it is done. Bc we don't use it (there's no checkpoint later on to get a restart or any advantage). When skipping the hotel, we do use one of the pallets to get out of bounds, which is consistent.
