The execution is extremely simple on this version. Just quickly switch from the high gear to low and back to high (and repeat this every second or so). This way you won't lose any speed when driving off-road.
Unfortunately, the technique is quite inconsistent on this version because the game frequently fails to read the inputs, possibly due to lag frames.
That's a nice demonstration, thanks for bringing it up!
I've definitely seen the thread before but somehow forgot about it.
I don't see anything wrong with this run either, but the majority here doesn't seem to accept this or the other runs if AFB doesn't submit them to the leaderboard themselves and somehow demonstrate they're capable of doing runs like that.
At least people now know that all those runs exist despite not appearing on this site.
These runs were rejected: https://www.speedrun.com/outrunarcade/run/zg714ojz https://www.speedrun.com/outrunarcade/run/z110wnwz https://www.speedrun.com/outrunarcade/run/yl42gxxm https://www.speedrun.com/outrunarcade/run/y92g4drz https://www.speedrun.com/outrunarcade/run/z032vqoz https://www.speedrun.com/outrunarcade/run/y6pjgrpm https://www.speedrun.com/outrunarcade/run/me8drg2m https://www.speedrun.com/outrunarcade/run/mk9xjolz https://www.speedrun.com/outrunarcade/run/y2q8nd5y https://www.speedrun.com/outrunarcade/run/yo281x5z https://www.speedrun.com/outrunarcade/run/mk9wo31z
Obviously if a run can be determined to be tool-assisted, it should be deleted.
RX's runs might not be tool-assisted but were done on a bootleg version of the game, and therefore should not be accepted.
AL82's runs are definitely TASes. They mention that on their YT channel.
I do appreciate that people spend time to find at least the fastest run or two (not every run on the internet, really) in a game that is essentially designed to be speedrun and submit them to the leaderboard, where people can always judge themselves if something's legit or not. I really don't care about having a "speedrun.com WR" or other placement in any game when better runs can be found elsewhere.
I found a site that lists old arcade records published in Mycom BASIC Magazine. Use a translation service or find バーチャレーシング (全部門)

Beginner race
You can find the full list here. Use Google Translate or find スーパーハングオン (全部門)
Here you can find the old arcade records (1989-90) published in Mycom BASIC Magazine. The times obviously don't include the preliminary run.
The timer in the modern re-releases seem to be slightly slower compared to the Arcade/Saturn version. I feel it would be kind of pointless to make a new leaderboard for a slower version with just a couple runs, though.
The Switch version seems the most fun, at least for casual play.
The timer bug might not be exactly the same as in SHO but it is just as annoying.
I can remove those runs because people feel strongly about them and it is indeed very easy to make tool-assisted runs like this (I'm looking at you, World of Longplays).
The fastest runs on SRC aren't necessarily the fastest runs ever done since people often don't submit their runs to this site for various reasons.
It is, however, 100% possible to drive like that even on an actual arcade cabinet:
So, what should we do? We could simply add another column for the sum of split times and order the leaderboard by that?
I could add also add another mod if someone volunteers to re-time the existing runs😅
It's the same broken timer they used in Super Hang-On, which is a shame. You can find some information about the broken timer here, for example. Maybe there's another explanation somewhere else. http://www.ukvac.com/forum/fixing-bugs-in-out-runs-timing-system_topic338675.html

But I'm still not sure why the final time is what it is. It seems to be pretty close to real time.
I find adding random categories with just one runner rather pointless, although using Zeroforce definitely makes the run more interesting than using Madonna for example 😄I would add a new category if there are more people interested in running it.
The current single season category has been empty for years already, which looks pretty bad.
It will definitely attract players who just want to do runs of as many different games as possible, but I doubt it would make them more interested in trying any other categories.
I'd probably accept rev1 if you want to run this on emulator. Bizhawk would probably be fine. Just don't use Fusion.
Unfortunately, there's no emulator that runs revision 0 properly. BlastEm comes closest but it requires a beefy CPU. Someone should try out the newest version and see how it plays.
No one has done Original Mode runs because emulators can save anything from 1 to 5 seconds every minute and the differences between emulators are massive. And almost no one runs this on console
Too bad everyone wants to use rev0 :P
