That is prettier
I don't remember how to set that up (something to do with sub categories and variables) but may do that if runs start coming in
I've created categories for the new remastered version. "All Campaigns" isn't something that anyone really runs so I haven't made that category, but if someone wants to submit it I'm open to it.
Individual levels was here before I became a mod and probably shouldn't be a category given the low attention they get, but I'm leaving them for DOS, but I do not plan on making level categories for remastered.
There are up to Coat 4 from the main menu. I'm fine creating a Coat 4 if someone wants to run it.
For these speedruns we use the "Boy" option because "Girl" games just require less points but are otherwise the exact same. If someone wants a Girl category let me know and I can make one, but it's the exact same sprite and stats.
According to Kelsy, for "26.7 the notes that are tied together actually need to be played staccato style. If you play them as shown in the sheet music, you'll fail".
Thought I'd record some of my notes for the lessons. The "hardest" part of each lesson is the final performance shown above. In the practice room, you can do the individual note practice, rhythm practice, etc., for these lessons. These are the hardest parts of each lesson and the game, so it can pay off to practice these specifically. It's also a good test to see "how far you can get".
There are multiple songs not shown above that aren't featured in the lessons, only in the practice room, that you cannot be graded on.
Lesson 7 is bugged and has to be memorized and played with a 60 bpm tempo. When it turns the page it lags and cannot be completed by matching the screen.
Lesson 32, Greensleeves, requires the foot pedal. The footpedal is often not included with many used Miracle Pianos and is harder to find than the actual piano!
PecoDeGuile (@GuilePeco) has a guide on how to get a proper AC adapter and how to make your own foot pedal from commonly available foot pedals on amazon that you can find here: https://x.com/GuilePeco/status/1782453111845437711
The cable adapter that connects the Miracle Piano to the NES can also be difficult to find. PecoDeGuile has another video of him building cables with easily available parts: https://x.com/GuilePeco/status/1770244532665524404
I'd definitely agree with not touching any existing categories, there's still a lot to be uncovered in them too.
I will send it their way! Also I'm fine with an alternative point #, the points chosen were based on allowing two ways to get victory and to keep the goal within our time constraints. It matching the super bowl winning point total was a coincidence, we were first!
We had 65+ people run "get 25 points" on Saturday if that counts for something
In Big 20 #18 we had the goal of "Score 25 points". This was a fairly unique goal compared to the others on the leaderboard because it didn't require running the clock -- in fact, running the clock was bad!
I am looking at playing all the games from the Big 20 in a speedrunning sense, but there don't seem to be any categories for this game that don't involve running the clock. 25 points might not be the best option but any category that would involve people playing the game but not running out the clock after hitting the point threshold would be a welcome change. The "49 points category" is close, but at the end you still need the clock to run out.
4 year necro bump, for big 20 we just did a partial goal of chapter 2 -- with how this game is set up, having a "beat chapter 1", "beat chapter 2", etc., as misc goals could be good mini-goals that would let people explore the game some. We had a blast looking deeper into the game and it could be a good way to get more people looking at DW.
If I made and provided a romhack of this that just allowed you to go straight to the title screen would that be allowed and/or appreciated
There are a multitude of categories that could exist for this game, but very few have played it all the way through to know what they could be. Because of its historically low activity, I'm open to categories being created that are shorter in nature compared to the full game, which can be several hours. If you have an idea for a category and are willing to run it, let me know and I can create a category for it if it is appropriate.
Suggested categories could be:
- Any% - Complete both main missions. This was suggested by the developer for TMR during his NESMania project. This run could be over 10 hours long, though it could also be much shorter for someone who routes the game out. I am 100% fine with this category allowing for breaks in the stream and/or pausing the timer due to the incredible length of the game.
- Complete a Mission - Complete either of the main missions
- Achieve specific rating. There are different ratings you can get by playing the game and destroying ships (e.g., "Dangerous"). These are concrete goals that are a bit more targeted.
- Achieve a certain amount of currency (e.g., Millionaire, Billionaire, etc.). This is a trading game so it can be a category on its own.
- Complete a Bounty. There's bounty hunting in this game! Completing one of these tasks would involve improving your ship, finding and completing the bounty.
I'm also open to other ideas people may have, such as gathering the best equipment for your ship, becoming a pirate, etc., there are many partial goals available. As I have time I will explore some of these myself and maybe make the category and run myself.
The "primary" category for now is Training as it is the only created category. It is short and introduces the game and controls. This is a PAL game that doesn't play well with Everdrives, so it is likely emulator only for most. As more categories are created, they would become the primary category. The primary category would be whichever run is most competitive and the most complete game -- ideally Any%, completing a mission, or achieving a specific rating.
If TMR and Dugongue, who have both completed a casual playthrough of Elite, wanted to submit their runs as Any% runs I would be accepting of this and use their runs as a baseline for the ruleset in terms of breaks.
To reiterate JSR's post, we currently have over 100 people running this which is more than the 300k points category. It's also a relatively short run (7-9 min) and is fun.
