I think one of the best parts of speedrunning is being able to admire your own accomplishments, and look at the accomplishments of others. But looking at someone's profile and seeing "first place" doesn't mean much without the context of the game. For example, getting 10th place Portal Any% is a much bigger feat than getting 2nd place in a random mobile game.
So here's my suggestion. You should be able to change the metric for runs on your own profile (only on profiles, not on game leaderboards) into something else of your choosing. Whether that be percentile, or displaying it in front of all runs in that category, for example 2nd out of 78 runs.
I don't think the site should become more competitive, which is why I think this should only be on personal profiles. But I don't see the harm in more customization, and more ways to show off your difficult accomplishments.
It looks to me like anyone can set up a post and promise prize money. But what is stopping them from just up and leaving when it comes time to pay out?
Does speedrun.com middleman the money first, or is it more like a black market where you just hope the person is trustworthy?
Are the WR graphs based on time submitted, or time verified. E.g;
Person 1 submits run on April 2 Person 2 submits run on April 8 Moderator logs on and verifies both on April 13.
Would it show the runs as April 2 and April 8 in the graph respectively? Or will it show them both as April 13? And if it's the latter, which one takes priority?
Of course a major factor is just the thrill of going through games quickly. But I feel like a lot of people also have goals in mind. Whether that's getting the WR, breaking a PR minute barrier, finding a timesave for everyone else to use, etc.
For me it's theorycrafting with other people and being able to beat WRs through logic rather than brute force. Finding a skip, no matter how minor, is a high that nothing else can replicate.
What about for you guys?
If you submit runs on different platforms on a board, it will show the top run for each platform. For example if I were to submit a PS4, Xbox One, and PC run of a game in the Any% category, I would be shown on the Any% board 3 different times.
Is it rude / frowned upon to do this? Should I delete my previous runs so it doesn't happen? Or do people generally not care?
I want to calculate Load-Removed-Time for a run which has been uploaded to YT. The loading screens are often only 1 or 2 seconds, which makes it almost required to start counting milliseconds.
Is there any way to count milliseconds on YT? For a while I was counting individual frames but that is extremely tedious and inconsistent, for example if the source is 30fps but was rendered in 60fps.
Is HFF more popular over there, is it an inside joke, etc?
Not trying to be xenophobic just curious.
Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game have paid DLC with characters that can be used in both campaigns. Some of the characters are insanely powerful and you don't have to unlock them any other way.
I'm assuming this is disallowed but I want to make sure.
all the crossed out categories go over the graph lol
How do you add this secondary dropdown that's separate from the primary one? Like this: https://imgur.com/a/sor82yd
And if I made these new categories, is there a way to transfer runs from the old more messy category over?
Many parts of the site categorize things as "recent" and "total"
What is considered recent? Within a certain time period? A long string of activity?
I've noticed they fluctuate depending on the page. A game's preview may say there are 0 active runners, but clicking on it will say there are 2, for example.
The rules say that level runs don't allow NG+, but how is that viable? Let's say I want to run Starscream's level but mess up. Do I have to run through the entirety of the prior levels in a new game save just to get back to it? And if so then what about savestates, are those allowed?
Most big games I've checked out have emulators completely banned with no exceptions. Sometimes even for consoles that are 6th generation and younger. It doesn't make sense to me to block out a huge group of people.
Is there a fully conclusive reason as to why? I guess cheating is technically easier but you could cheat on real hardware as well with basic CFW.
Is there an easy way to manually cut out loads without the use of high-end editing software? I know there's plugins that precisely time YouTube videos but I can't find any that let you specify load times.
I filled out the form for a category extension. How will I be notified when it is read?
The video for the solo Nacht round 5 world record is private. Does that invalidate it? If not, it's unfortunate you can't view it anymore.
