shift + function key game speed change

so, as revealed by the dev, shift + f10 causes the game to run at 180% speed, which would be a huge speed boost. shift + f5 turns to 25% speed which causes physics glitches (haven't found a use for that yet)

in any case, I think this may add an independent layer of distinction, another subcategory.

Hello! Welcome to Recursed!

I've been debating how best to add the speed-changes. The ideal would be a separate subcategory as you say, but I'm wondering if a displayed variable for gamespeed (showing either 100% or 180%) for each leaderboard would be best while growing a community here.

I'll try to come to a solution and tinker with the boards during my breaks today. At least verifying your run won't take long!

In any case I can imagine a future where 100% game speed is how people learn the game before taking off their weighted clothing to go 180% speed. Though I'd imagine weaker rigs (like the laptop I'm stuck on) would struggle with OBS and a game running at higher speeds so some people might be confined to normal game speed.

25% Tutorial could be a meme category. Like the Long Runs they have in some games (Like How to Rob a Gas Station).

Variable set, and I now better understand more of the mod tools so that's pretty pog. Had to click (Set default variable for all runs without...) despite having manually adjusted the variable on the two runs to get them to show up again.

Wish the chosen value displayed beside each run in the leaderboard but maybe once we have some 180 runs it'll start showing. I'll look into this further anyway.

Edit: okay so it does display, just wasn't showing on my mobile even with the desktop version of the site. Happy days. Just FYI I have made it so the variable doesn't obsolete itself, so a runner's fastest 100 and fastest 180 runs should both show for a bit more flavour.

Edit: Okay I'm definitely going to turn it into a sub-category. Maybe when we have more runners so I don't feel like I'm bloating the boards needlessly. Side note, I'm still struggling through the main game so I'm hoping someone takes a crack at the bigger categories soon so they don't sit unloved for too long.

well, I was thinking it should be separated by "allow speed change" vs "don't allow", since you might want to not be on 180% speed when doing more precise tricks (or maybe using slow speed to glitch the game?) but this is fine I guess.

That's certainly an option, but I think changing speeds back and forth in the middle of a level would be finicky and the end result would be very talented runners leaving it on for 99.9% of the run anyway. Unless we can find some glitches using the slowdown which would be an absolute game changer.

Things can always be altered as needed anyway. This is a work in progress until we have a large enough community that we land on the perfect set of rules organically. The game has a lot of custom level makers so I imagine die-hard Recursed fans should be easy enough to find.

So I've labelled the variable Maximum Game Speed. This means that both 100 and 180 runs can dip down to 25% speed if useful glitches are found and that 180 runs can use 100 speed when needed. Now we essentially have future-proofed categories with laxer parameters kind of like Doit's allow/disallow. Until we find 25% glitches, max 100 will effectively function as the 'disallow' category and if we do find some juicy tricks then we simply need to make a glitchless category to take over this niche.

I'm going to get the two pending runs verified today but I'm feeling optimistic about the future of these leaderboards. Didn't think we'd have three runners so soon.

Edit: The top of the 180 leaderboards will still end up being like strict 180 speed only runs in my opinion, but now people can work their way up the board while learning by using 180 maybe only in certain sections. I think it'll be hard for the average person to burn those keybinds into their muscle memory but there's much more flexibility while learning this game now. We have 4399doit to thank for polishing off these leaderboards.
