i am literally holding a boxed copy of the game in my hand that says "Resident Evil 7: biohazard" on it

Actually, Resident Evil is the alternate title for Biohazard.

Back when Biohazard was first created in Japan it was fine to call it that however when they tried to release in the west (Europe & America) they found out there was already a rock band or something who had the name Biohazard trademarked or copyrighted that sort of thing

So they came up with Resident Evil; but because it's been a long time, and especially for global versions they now just call them Resident Evil/ Biohazard or Resident Evil: Biohazard. Might be reading into that ":" a bit too much
