The current route is the "stable unstable" route, which completely obsoletes all historical routes in terms of both reliability and final times possible.

This page will provide fairly threadbare notes to help you finish a run - it's up to you to play through a couple times to memorise the details.


* [big][big][big]CLEAR SAVE DATA (UP+B+SELECT) BEFORE EVERY RUN UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT PLAYING ON GAMBATTE.[/big][/big][/big]
* Options Fast/Off/Set
* Name yourself a one character name and rival "{MN}_" (That is the MN character with a space).
* Get Pikachu, win or lose Rival fight - it doesn't matter that much, but the L10 Caterpie is harder if you're only level 5 for it.
* If you win Rival fight, kill a level 2-3 Pidgey on Route 1 to get to level 7 after the L10 Caterpie (for safety / less Potions needed vs Diglett later)
* Pick up a couple of early Potions for healing Pikachu
* Head straight through Viridian Forest - don't buy anything at Viridian Mart and only fight the (compulsory) last Bug Catcher.
* Make sure you have at least 2 Potions after the Bug Catcher, picking up the Potion next to him if necessary.
* Take Pewter Pokemon Center & buy 2 Escape Ropes, 1 Antidote, and as Poké Balls as you can afford at Pewter Mart (9-10). (YOLO strats: 3 Escape Ropes + 7-8 Poke Balls to save inputs.)
* Head back into Viridian Forest and use the Escape Rope to Trainer Fly back to Pewter off of the Yellow-only Bug Catcher facing right on one of the bends in the grass.
* In Pewter, head for the Gym and fight Brock's scrub trainer to reactivate controls. Growl Diglett 6 times to make the Gengar encounter Level 1 then die to Diglett. Heal with Potions when necessary, but don't over-heal as he needs to be able to kill you and at -6 Attack he only does 2 damage without a critical.
* Once you die, read the sign outside the pokecenter and walk back into forest. This gets you an extra ball to throw at Gengar.
* Encounter Gengar in the forest. Thundershock it once then throw as many Poké Balls as you need to catch it. Nickname it a single letter.
* Once caught, make your way back towards the Trainer-Fly guy again once more.
* Underflow Gengar off an encounter on the way to the Trainer-Fly guy. You may choose to run from scary things (high level Pidgeys & Pidgeotto), especially if Gengar paralyzed Pikachu with Lick. Gengar can't be damaged by any encounter in the forest, but you can lose time failing to run from them.
* Once you reach the Trainer-Fly guy with your L100 Gengar in tow, use your second Escape Rope to Trainer-Fly off him again.
* Go and fight the scrub trainer in Brock's gym again to reactivate your controls, but obviously win this time.
* Beat Brock up with a couple of Licks. 
* If you used up all your Potions or all your Poke Balls before this point, enter Pewter Mart on your way to Route 3 and make sure you have at least 1 of each when you leave.
* Use Gengar to body Brock & Route 3. Use Night Shade on Normal types and Lick on everything else. Fight the Lass instead of the Bug Catcher on Route 3.
* At the end of Route 3, ignore the Center and head straight into Mt. Moon.
* Head straight through Mt. Moon and destroy the Super Nerd & Team Rocket.
* After Mt. Moon, go directly to Cerulean Gym.
* Bop Misty's scrub trainer with the Goldeen.
* Fight Misty herself. Bop Staryu with Gengar, then send out Pikachu to die on Starmie. After Pikachu dies, bop Starmie with Gengar.
* Leave the Gym and enter Cerulean Center. Go to the PC and deposit **Gengar** (this is not a mistake).
* Take one step in any direction and the game will realize you have no living mons and warp you to pewter center.
* Open your menu and inventory, swap potions to slot 6 and toss any extras you have above 1 (you must end this step with potion x1 in slot 6)
* Walk back into Viridian Forest.
* An unstable missingno appears, be patient while it loads battle, you have not crashed unless you did something wrong up to this point (e.g. didn't clear save)
* Stall a turn with Growl so you take damage. (1 growl also usually lowers Pay Day damage, saving a little time over Tail Whip)
* Use a first potion, take damage (so if it misses you, use Growl again until it does damage)
* Use a second potion (you will have a quantity ending in 7 left ¤after¤ this second potion, if you don't use additional potions until you do)
* Catch it (first ball auto catches)
* After the battle, do nothing wait until you see your character's sprite appear on left. (~7 seconds, better late than crashing, no window you have to hit)
* Once it does appear, press up to get into gatehouse.
* Walk to top door (to route 2) in the gatehouse.
* Swap your third item with the stack of Potions, and toss the item you just swapped for the Potions.
* Toss the two items currently above the stack of 255 Potions.
* Toss 255 Potions from slot 1 twice. (IF YOU THREW YOUR LAST POKE BALL AT THE MISSINGNO, ONLY DO THIS ONCE)
* Toss 253 Potions from slot 1, then swap slot 1 with slot 2 twice. This should give you dry underflow
* Scroll down through a bunch of []x[][] glitch items until you find a stack of TM26, then switch TM26 x<glitch>7 with Great Balls x0 further down.
* Toss 1 of the item above where the TM26 stack now is. This will give you fastest text speed. (Item should be <glitch> x<glitch>3, toss one of that)
* Switch the TM26 stack again, with Master Ball x13.
* Now, toss 9 TM26s, and exit the gatehouse through the north door.
* Now, instead of exiting to Route 2, you have gone to a glitched hall of fame! Congrats! You have completed the run!



[section=Technical Details (if interested)]

**Killing Pidgeys**

Level 6 Pikachu can have either 11 or 12 Special. Level 2 Pidgeys will always die to one Thundershock, and Level 3s will always die save for freak occurrences where it rolls high Special & HP & you get a terrible damage roll (1/16 for 8 Special, 4/8 16 HP if 8 Special, 10/39 low roll). Don't bother with Level 4+, 4s have only about a 30% to die and 5+ are completely impossible without a crit. The extra EXP required to level Pikachu to 7 after the L10 Caterpie fight is just 9, so any possible encounter is enough.

**Catching Gengar**

Gengar will always survive a non-critical Thundershock unless you have 14 Special (only possible at level 7) **and** hit the 1/39 highest possible damage roll. He will always die to a critical Thundershock at 12-13 Special but has about a 50% chance to live if you only have 11 Special. After 1 Thundershock the chance to catch him should be 17.97% per Poké Ball, meaning you are favorite to catch him each run if you throw all the Poké Balls you buy (79-89% depending on how many balls you have).

**Lick vs Night Shade**

Early on, you might be tempted to use Night Shade instead of Lick because Night Shade can't critical. However, you should actually use Lick whenever possible because the critical hit textbox isn't actually very long and each extra use of Night Shade costs 7 frames of text over Lick, which is more than the amount you expect to save on average from not having the critical hit chance. Lick also comfortably kills every Pokémon you can use it on in the run.

**Yellow NSC, Emulators, and You**

As of June 2015 Gambatte does not emulate unstable Missingno correctly due to an inaccuracy in its MBC5 implementation. Therefore you must use BGB or console to do this run. Bizhawk 1.9.4 and below are affected by the same bug as Gambatte due to their use of the libgambatte core for GB/GBC, but the issue has been fixed as of BizHawk 1.10.0 and above.

**Yellow NSC, Save Data, and You**

While the actual workings of Yellow's stable unstable Missingno situation are pretty complicated, everything you need to know to just /do/ the run can be summarised in a few bullet points:

*  Whether Yellow's Missingno is stable or unstable directly depends on the contents of your cart/emulator's save data, but encountering one also re-corrupts that save data even if you don't actually save.
*  Clearing save data with Up+B+Select will reset the save data to a state where you are guaranteed to be able to encounter unstable Missingno safely once.
*  Therefore you must clear save data after every run you encounter Missingno, as well as at the start of every session. However, PSR rules also mandate that you start the run with no prior save data, so you should clear save data even if you didn't reach Missingno in your last run.

ٴ[OUTDATED] Yellow NSC Guide (February 2017)

INTRO:
- Set options to Fast/Off/Shift.
- Give the Trainer and Rival a one character name.

PALLET TOWN:
- Don't grab the PC Potion. Get Pikachu and name it a one character name. Battle your rival.

RIVAL 1:
- Spam Thundershock
- Winning or losing doesn't matter. Things will be easier if you win, but it's not required.
- Leave the lab and head north to Route 1.

ROUTE 1:
- Go up to Viridian City and heal in the center to set your warp point.
- Enter the mart and get the Parcel.
- Return to Pallet Town and deliver the Parcel, then return to Viridian City.

VIRIDIAN CITY:
- Enter the mart and buy 4 Pokeballs.
- Exit the mart and head to Viridian Forest.

VIRIDAN FOREST:
- Run away from any Encounter you see.
- Pickup the Potion Item Ball on your way.
- Manip a Deathfly on the 3rd Bug Catcher.

- Spam Tailwhip or Thundershock, if you won or lost the Rival Fight respectively.

ROUTE 2:
- Head back up Route 2 and walk through the grass, catch any encounter if you happen to get one.
- Enter the forest again.

VIRIDAN FOREST:
- If you didn't catch a dummy pokemon yet, catch any encounter you see here, but try to avoid catching Metapods.
- All trainers are deactivated, proceed through the forest.

PEWTER CITY:
- Enter the center and talk to the Jigglypuff from the right.
- Walk down 1, Right 6.
- Walk up 1.
- Walk down and up 16 to 17 times, where each iteration is walking 2 steps down and 2 steps up.
- Walk back to Pikachu and talk to him.
- If you done this correctly, your in game timer should be set to 255:59.
- Deposit Pikachu and leave the center.
- Head to the Mart.
- Buy an Escape rope.
- Walk to the gym.

PEWTER CITY GYM:
- Walk into the line of sight of the one trainer in the Gym so that he walks to you (this is important). If he does not walk to you, the game will freeze and you will have to reset.
- Simply die to the trainer as fast as possible.

VIRIDIAN CITY:
- Do THE Manip:

- Walk to Viridian Forest but make sure you jump down a ledge on your way (this is also important).
- If you done the manip correctly, a mart should pop up.

VIRIDIAN FOREST:
- Select the Buy option and do the following: (Don't mash B, keizaron)
	> Press A on the 3rd item (Bicycle) so that you will asked to choose an amount, but press B to backout.
	> Buy 1 of the tmtrainer item in the 2nd slot.
	> Exit the mart shop entirely.
- Escape rope out.

VIRIDIAN CITY:
- Enter the Mart and do the following:
	> Walk 1 left and attempt to save, but press B at the Yes/No dialog.
	> Toss 116 from the glitched item in your 3rd slot (you currently have 186).
	> Walk 2 up and flash your item bag.
	> Talk to the seller.
	> Attempt to sell the glitched item.
	> Open the buy menu and attempt to buy the SS Ticket, but back out.
	> Buy the glitched item in the 2nd slot.
	> Close mart entirely.
	> Walk 2 down, and attempt to save again.
	> Toss 1 from the glitched item in slot 3 of your inventory.
	> Toss the first 2 items in your inventory (Pokeball and Potion).
	> Attempt to save again and walk 1 right.

ITEM UNDERFLOW:
	> Toss 253 of the glitched item in the FIRST slot.
	> Swap slot 1 with slot 2 twice. Each time, the two stacks will merge.
	> Scroll down past a load of []x[] items until you hit some "real" items.
	> Find a stack of []x[] x[]9 and select it to swap.
	> Swap it with Ultraball x0 4 slots below.
	> Toss 11 from the []x[] x[]9 stack (Note: Using the item will crash the game!).
	> Select it again and swap it with Masterball x1 4 slots below.
	> Close the menu, and exit the Mart.
- If you done everything correctly, you should end up in the Hall of Fame!
- Timing ends when it flashes white to the credits.
