Moderation when approving Mega Man leaderboard requests

imo it's not really different to any other game/series. Some people request games and don't mod them properly, it happens all the time. That's why this thread exists: http://www.speedrun.com/The_Site/thread/63nr7

The admins have limited time so background checks are out of the question, it'd take way too much time.

there is a spot on "request game" that asks for a vod of your run and someone elses. idk how new it is though :)

It's been suggested many times now to have dummy pages on this site that just link to the external leaderboards in cases like super metroid and mega men. I'm not really sure what the value of having a duplicate board here is if most people won't submit to it.

I've been handling most of these requests. I generally consider these cases to be some of the grayest, most confusing cases on the site, and it's certainly fair to say there are improvements that could be looked at. The point of game request approval is to try to improve the quality of the game list and ideally get decent moderators in place. We've been getting upwards of 50 requests a week lately, which generally takes some time to do a half-decent job with. I'm certainly open to suggestions for better results, but I do have concerns about some of the solutions presented.

There was some discussion numerous months ago about creating an API between the two sites for Mega Man, but the somewhat convoluted system of maintaining this from both sides was difficult to sort out, and no final implementation of this idea came to fruition on our end. It's still a possibility, but it's not being actively pursued at the moment.

Regarding adding boards, the general site policy is to not copy a full list of times without permission. Admittedly these things do need written down to be more clear. It is also unclear whether the idea of 'permission' is to be assumed for all megamanleaderboards games, or if it would need obtained on an individual community basis, so users likely do not want to overstep their bounds with the replication of data. The common case for requesting a game is that a user wants to track their run on this site so they can have all their runs in one common place, and lack of Mega Man boards hinders a user's ability to do this, so they request the game and add their time.

I'll add that I've strongly advocated against preventing users from adding an entire game to this site. I think it is ridiculous to say speedrun.com users can track every game in existence on one site except the ~30 gray cases presented by games with other existing leaderboards. The Megaman community has generally not made any issue out of this idea, but others have and those cases are still horribly ambiguous and confusing.

Parts of the Mega Man community don't seem to want to add boards by their own volition, so is it not reasonable that when someone who plays the game asks to moderate it, that it be added? I understand that people don't like tracking things in two places, but the idea of not requesting the game for over a year and then not liking the situation when someone else wants to request it is difficult to find a solution to. Is it my job to reserve a board because a number of players at another site like theirs better and don't feel like tracking it here, or is it my job to allow a subset of our 23,000 users to submit runs to a game that they might want to play?

Megamanleaderboards tracks numerous games including rom hacks and fangames, and lesser games with very few runs. I'd offer Mega Man Star Force 1 as an extreme example. Do I need one of the two runners' permission to add it on this site? If they say no, are we not allowed to track it?

Addressing all of these points tends to lead to a circular argument. Can we track boards for all games? Do the people who moderate them at MMLB want to maintain them? Should we copy all the MMLB times for games? What if a game doesn't want us to? If the game isn't up to date should it not exist? Can we track boards for all games?

I'm just trying to emphasize how ambiguous this is. I find these to be difficult points to handle even reasonably consistently. I'm open to solutions.

Thanks for the response.

If a group of Megaman moderators wants series moderation and wants us to refer requests for Megaman games through them (through the series forums for example) to try to best resolve the situation, that's something we could relatively easily do. I don't really see the need for any sort of automated system to do this, if this is decided to be the expectation.

My primary concern is that long-term we aren't preventing users from tracking their runs here if they want to.

Regarding your first point, I think that long term there should be a way to list "PBs" on profiles without having to submit to boards. It requires a substantial restructuring of how runs are handled currently, though. While the site's primary purpose might not be tracking PBs, some people use it for that, and I think improvements to the site would better support that use. Not having a game currently prevents people from tracking their time for it on this site, which is something people want to do with the site.

Would you want us to break up the series into smaller portions and you guys decide on series moderators and have those users handle the requests via the series forums? One of the next site updates should cover allowing a game to be in multiple series, so we could have a game in the Megaman and Megaman X series for example.

I split up Classic and X for now, since there are a lot of them. Handheld has almost no games on the site currently, and I'm unclear how to move that forward.

Do you want to be added as a Classic series moderator and coordinate Classic? It doesn't look like X really needs additional moderators unless LuizMiguel wants added to X8, and it also doesn't have more games to add.

The long term plan is to add the games to multiple series when that functionality is available.

I added you and joka. You are able to add the rest through the interface, I'd recommend mentioning it to them first if you haven't already.

Put your times on megamanleaderboards.net , there's no need to maintain 2 leaderboards manually that's why you wont see up to date stuff on this site

France

You have to respect the communities' choice.

Switzerland

If people want to use this site to have all their PBs in one place, they should be able to do it. If you want to allow certain communities to monopolize leaderboards (something I still strongly oppose), there should at least be a way to display your PBs in those games without a leaderboard. Because it clearly takes away functionality from this site if people can't keep track of all their PBs.

I would love to keep track of all my pb's on this site, but that won't happen until an api connects the 2 sites together (zelda series at least gives a damn to keep this site used).

It's the "communities" decision to wait until both sites can connect, not to forgo using this site.

If you look it up, you'll probably see quite a few games are on this site and have times on it. That shows you who at least cares to keep their games more widely accessible to others. If you really want, just go on the mega man leaderboards website, find the moderators who are in charge of said games, and ask them to do stuff over here.
