New category: threesome%

Hello,

I've recently heard of a so-called "meme" DW run that has been ran in the past, called the "threesome%" run. Basically, it comes down to getting to the Dragonlord with the princess in your arms, and accept his offer, which triggers the bad ending.

Here's an example of the run: &

I'll run this one offline as my main rig's board got killed, and my backup PC is a toaster that would explode if I tried streaming with it. I'll try to record the attempt, however possible that may be. Meanwhile, I thought it would be a cool category to add, as it presents a different challenge, different routing options as the goal vastly differs from the main game (ie: defeating the dragonlord vs merely getting to him to "exchange services").

Please let me know if you'd be willing to add the category. Thanks!

I will add any category if there are more than 1 runner for said category. I personally have no problem with meme categories however if there is an issue with it in the community I also have no problem not adding it.

I would also need the rules for the run defined if it's to be added.

Thank you for your interest.

Very well, here's the run I recorded from the toaster. If it says that it's still processing, simply check a bit later on. :P

There's room for improvement for sure. Did quite a few oopsies when I lost track of a few things, namely keys when going to save the princess. That allowed me to find out, after my run was done, that the Green Dragon kill DOES get saved if you haven't saved the princess yet. That should make the Flame Sword (which I grinded extra for) useless, as I thought I'd have to fight the dragon after every Charlock dive fail. It did make the Axe Knight fight easier, but I think going for the Silver Shield before the Axe Knight helped more with survivability than the extra damage of the Flame Sword vs the Broad Sword.

But man was I ever uber-lucky with my Charlock dive. Only ONE AK47 and NO Fun Police! :D Now why do I never get that kind of dive on my normal level 18 runs?...

So next runs should have less grinding for sure.

As for rules, here's how I would put them up as:

  • GOAL: Take the princess to the Dragonlord and accept his offer, rather than fight him.
  • Timer starts when done choosing response speed on character creation.
  • Timer ends when the menu becomes blood red, after accepting the Dragonlord's offer.
  • RNG manipulation is not allowed.

I can't say im a sensitive person per se and I enjoy my fair share of dark humor enough to have people look at me with big eyes and wondering how many times I got dropped as a kid to joke about certain shit. But to go on record at SRC with a "Threesome%" stands out to me as just childish and without class to the game itself and its community. I'm quite frankly appalled by this decision and I cannot BELIEVE this got accepted by moderators alone.

As much as twitch doesn't allow certain usernames, there's a line we shouldn't cross here as well just to keep speedrunning on a somewhat professional level. I don't endorse this decision and I for one hope that we don't start to see this trend snowballing into something bigger on speedrun.com as a whole. Distasteful to say the least.

Thank you for your input shikaroxen. I have taken what you said into consideration and changed the name of the category to something temporary for now. I agree using threesome% might be viewed as being tacky so I'm sure there won't be an issue with a change. We need a new category name to use so any suggestions from anyone would be appreciated.

Sidenote: I am actually more okay with "naked%" as being discussed in another topic... Reason being for instance I believe you ARE literally naked in Dark Souls/Breath of the wild if you wanna go for such a run? Granted Low% or No Gear/Equipment would arguably be a better name for it..?

@shikaroxen: The reason why it bears such a name is because it has always been known as such within the Dragon Quest speedrunning community. This is the first time I've heard of anyone taking offense to the name, to be fair.

Now you mentioned professionalism. The number of speedrunners who do that as their profession is quite small. Plus, I've seen much, much worse in terms of issues that would make speedrunning look "unprofessional", namely how certain speedrunners/"professional gamers" carry themselves in general. But that's an entirely different debate, for sure.

I really don't see why this would provoke such an outrage, to be quite honest. That's what a meme run is about, after all: inside jokes within the game/series' community. And those can be raunchy at times.

Please note that this is merely my opinion on the matter, and that I'm more puzzled than anything else when it comes to the reaction this drew. I fully trust pjplustwo's judgement on that, and am on board with whatever he decides. Just thought I'd put my two cents out, for what they're worth.

As for a name suggestion that would be more PG?

The only one that would come to mind would be something like "HeelTurn%". "Turning heel", in pro-wrestling lingo, means becoming a bad guy, usually by betraying the good guys in a very, very despicable manner. Which is what's being done ultimately in this run.

But then again, I believe we should let the suggestions roll for a while.

I personally had no problem with threesome% and understand the meme and why its called that. I also have no issue with what the category is named and I would have let the person who creates the category name it under normal circumstances. but ultimately my personal opinion isn't important. My actions are heavily weighted towards what's best for the community of the ACTUAL runners of the game itself. The reason for the name change is quite a few DW1 speedrunners who may run this category in the future pride themselves on having a PG channel. "Threesome%" in a twitch title is kinda counter intuitive to being PG. That's it, no other reason.

I appreciate and accept all opinions on the matter.
